Until you've been wet, cold, hungry, and having the time of your life, you haven't really experienced a music festival. For those used to listening to music in the quiet of home, the raucous atmosphere of festivals can be a shock; with dozens of bands and thousands of concert-goers, it's a rare event that doesn't feature some kind of organization cock-up. The chaos is all part of the fun, though, and the thrill of live performance can't be beaten. Whether it'll be brilliant or terrible often depends on how the band's feeling that day, but at a festival you know there'll be another group along in a minute.

Modern rock festivals started in the 1960s, with a free-wheeling, counter-cultural vibe that some say has been lost with their commercialization in recent years. Beijing's Midi festival is a tame affair compared to some of the giant English and American festivals, but it has a feeling of rawness and excitement about it that the overseas festivals lack. It's a fiercesomely good time, featuring some of the best Chinese groups, as well as a smattering of eager foreign groups keen to show off to a relatively new audience.

In this issue of Bilingual Time, we introduce you to some of the most famous – or infamous – festivals worldwide, as well as the burgeoning Chinese live music scene. With live music clubs and groups springing up all over China, there's never been a better time to be a serious music fan here, and we've interviewed Chinese and foreign artists involved in the Chinese music world. So, let the good times roll …

Famous Rock Festivals During The National Day Holiday

    Midi Festival

    Date: from October 1 to 5, 2008

Location: Beijing Midi School of Music

Organizer: Beijing Midi School of Music

    Stages:

    1. Main Stage

    2. Small Stage

The Midi Modern Music Festival is China's largest rock music festival. Since its inauguration in 1997 it has been held each year in Beijing during the May holiday (May 1-3), with some breaks due to licensing difficulties in 2003 and 2004, when it was held in October instead.

The festival is hosted by the Beijing Midi School of Music, Beijing's first and only rock music school which established in 1993. It is the first music school in China whose curriculum focuses on such modern musical genres as rock, jazz, blues, pop, Latin, country, funk, and so on. The school's mission is \"to promote an artistic and humanistic theory of modern music while offering students classes is advanced musical techniques\".

The 2006 festival, held in Beijing's Haidian Park, hosted 40-80 thousand visitors, and featured performances by more than 50 bands (including 18 foreign bands, such as Alev, Monokino, Yokohama Music Association, The Wombats, and The Mayflies) performing on four stages (Main Stage, Guitarchina Stage, Mini Midi Stage, and Disco Stage). The artists spanned a wide rangeof genres. The 2007 festival included UK acts The Crimea, Kava Kava (band), Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, and the Soundtrack Of Our Lives. Due to the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the festival this year was delayed to October. Let's look at it througt the audience's eyes.

    Audience

I'm a fairly hardcore rock fan – I used to have about five or six hundred CDs, but since I moved to China I've switched to just mp3s. Back when I lived in New Jersey I used to go to local shows all the time, or take the bus into New York to see people – I saw some amazing live shows back then.In Beijing I go to D-22 and Yugong Yishan a lot.

I've been to three Midi festivals before, and I was pissed off when this one was moved. It was never going to be as good as usual, because a lot of the atmosphere comes from having it outside in the park normally, and you just can't get that same feel in a school. Plus they lost a lot of the good foreign bands they had booked when they shifted around. I love Chinese rock, but I hear it all the time anyway, you know? Most of the people there I can see in Beijing anyway.

But still, I thought they did well with what they had, all things considered. The school had surprisingly good acoustics, and it was great to see some of my favourite bands with a proper stage – I mean, the Beijing clubs are ok, but they're not going to compare to a real setup, yeah? And it was a great atmosphere, especially among the Chinese fans – everyone was just fantastically happy that the event was on, everyone was having a good time. I got hugged by a lot of random Chinese girls, which I liked, though maybe my girlfriend wasn't so keen about that! I hope they can have it in the spring next year, though.

    Modern Sky Festival

Date: from September 30 to October 2, 2008

    Location: HaiDian Park, Beijing, China

    Organizer: Modern Sky Records

    Stages:

    1. Main Stage

    2. ROKR Stage

    3. Electric Stage

The Modern Sky Festival is one of the biggest outdoor music festivals in Beijing, China, organized by the Modern Sky record label.

The first festival was held on October 2-4, 2007 at Haidian Park. It featured four music stages and over 120 bands, headlined by the American band Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Chinese bands included New Pants, Rebuilding the Rights Of Statues, P.K.14, Queen Sea Big Shark, Joyside - who appear in the film Wasted Orient - and so on. The first festival was a big success and gathered a good reputation among music fans

After the success of the first festival, the second was held this year during the National Day holidays. The festival started at 1:00 p.m. each day from September 30 to October 2 with tickets selling for 60 yuan. Despite reports of a possible combined Midi and Modern Sky Festival back in April, which excited many fans, organizers ultimately chose not to link the two, and fans seem to have been happy going to both.

This year there are only three stages, two of which werelocated inside the Haidian Park exhibition hall. The main outdoor stage was set up in the square to the west of the exhibition hall. There were also plenty of stalls, music and other activities going on around the park.

The festival, in cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund, utilized energy-saving bulbs for lighting and has printed the festival pamphlets on recycled paper. The organizers also paid for carbon offets to counteract the emissions produced by the performers' travel. The money will be put toward future environmental protection campaigns.

However, organizers decided not to invite any big name foreign acts to perform at the festival. Although they had initially intended to ask Lou Reed, Blonde Redhead and Bright Eyes to perform at the outdoor festival, this year's music festival primarily featured domestic singers and bands, including mainland rock icons Zhang Chu and He Yong and the Carsick Cars.

    然而,主辦方?jīng)Q定本次音樂(lè)節(jié)不邀請(qǐng)任何知名的國(guó)外樂(lè)隊(duì)。盡管最初他們打算邀請(qǐng)盧#8226;里德, 樂(lè)隊(duì)“金發(fā)紅頭”和“亮眼睛”來(lái)參加本次音樂(lè)節(jié),但最終還是以本土的歌手以及樂(lè)隊(duì)為主,其中包括大陸搖滾偶像張楚、何勇還有樂(lè)隊(duì)“暈車(chē)的車(chē)”。

    Festival Highlights

    1. Not only music, but any art forms that commonly appeal to young people;

    Audience

    觀眾

I went to the Modern Sky Festival with my friend Maggie almost by accident; we'd just meant to go to another park but the traffic was really bad, so we saw the signs for the festival and went there instead. Neither of us are big rock fans, though we both like music, so it was a new experience for us.

It was very well designed – inside the Haidian Museum, with three, I think, sound stages and lots of room in the square in the middle. There they had lots of stalls, selling the normal things, like food and drink and snacks, but also merchandise from the bands – CDs, t-shirts, bags. A lot of things were branded with the marijuana symbol, which I thought was funny. Security was really tight – even more than at the Olympics, where I was working at a journalist. They checked everyone coming in, and you weren't allowed to bring bottled water.

All the bands were very loud, and it was hard for us to really tell who was who, because we weren't familiar with the scene. I know we saw Face (Miankong), and Wang Fei's ex-husband was there, Dou Wei. There weren't any really famous foreign bands, or at least not ones we knew. All of the musicians were very accomplished guitarists, singers, and so on, but most of them were ugly!

The crowd was really into the whole thing. Most of them were Chinese, but there was a good smattering of foreigners, mostly Americans, I thought. Many of them were very rock; a lot of pierced noses and bellybuttons and hair in all kinds of colours and styles. A bunch of people were throwing around an American football in front of one of the stages, and everyone was really having a great time. I enjoyed it a lot, and I might try and go again next year.

NOTCH Festival - Tomorrow AudioVisual Today

    NOTCH08 – Comma Coma

NOTCH is the largest audio-visual festival in China promoting cultural collaboration between China and Nordic countries. NOTCH 2008 features 30 Nordic artists spanning musical genres of Jazz, Improvisation, Electro-acoustic, Psychedelic Folk, Sound Art, Avant Garde Rock, Indie Pop and Ambient/Minimal Techno.

NOTCH Festival fuses cutting edge Scandinavian audiovisual culture with the rising new local scene, triggering the audience to rethink his/her contemporary and in-the-near-future roles via \"contemporizing the future\" and the practice of \"de-futurization\". Following the successful debut and sophomore efforts in 2006 and 2007 in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, NOTCH08 will return to the 3 cities during the 1st week of October in 2008. Hong Kong, in addition, will join as the 4th city.

NOTCH08's theme this year is \"Comma Coma\", i.e. non-stop coma, the overwhelming state we are facing in a year of natural disasters, stock market crisis and price increases of oil and food. How will we cope with it? Many people have no idea. NOTCH08 aims to present the ideality toward the future via participating Nordic and local artists' artistic expression that we should start reducing our consumption, not using more resources to further burden the fragile earth. It also reflects NOTCH's cultural meaning: notch, or groove, was how early recordings were made. Every single notch has its social value for being.

NOTCH08 selects 30 Nordic artists with multiple identities and minimal life attitude as \"evangelists\" of NOTCH's philosophy. The music spans across genres of Free Jazz, Improvisation, Electro-acoustic, Psychedelic Folk, Sound Art, Avant Garde Rock, Indie Pop and Ambient/Minimal Techno, plus the accompanying visual culture. Their identities span across composer, player, sound artist, sound engineer, DJ, producer, label master, curator, graphic designer, new media artist, photographer, illustrator, VJ, space designer, poet, writer and film director. They are sampled from the latest Nordic cultural scene and merge into the irregularly Chinese grass-roots cultural scene, thus stimulating new reaction.

    Monterey International Pop Festival

1967 was known as \"The Summer of Love\", when hundreds of thousands of young people in the United States came together to attempt to find new music, new values, and new drugs. Marked by a hostility to the culture of their parents, and united by idealistic far-left politics and opposition to the Vietnam War, the participants, mostly Americans but including visitors from all around the world, became known as \"flower children\" or \"hippies\".

The centre of the hippy movement was in California, and particularly in the Haight-Asbury district of San Francisco. It was near there, in the town of Monterey, that record producer Lou Adler, along with Michelle and John Philips of the pop group The Mamas and the Papas, planned a radical new festival, drawing together the new music from California and elsewhere.

Although the organizers charged money for tickets, all proceeds were donated to charity, and almost all the acts performed for free. The variety of music was incredible, from the sitar of Indian maestro Ravi Shankar, to jazz, blues, pop, and rock. One criticism was the lack of black artists; although several had been invited, Jimi Hendrix was the only major black performer to attend. The festival was a huge success, sparking a wave of imitators in the next few years, and unlike many subsequent events was also very well organised and managed – although the hallucinogenic drug LSD was widely used, under the name of \"Monterey Purple\", setting a pattern of heavy drug use that would continue throughout festivals to come.

    Woodstock Music Festival

The single most famous outdoor music festival, Woodstock, was held in the small town of Bethel in upstate New York from the 15th to the 17th of August 1969. Originally intended as a money-making venture by the organizers, the vast majority of the half-million or so attendees ended up being admitted for free. Local authorities feared difficulties in controlling the crowds, but a general spirit of peace, love, and happiness prevailed.

Despite poor organization, huge amounts of rain and mud, and a dire lack of toilets, the festival was widely seen as a huge success, with electrifing performances by many 60s stars, particularly Jimi Hendrix and the Who (although the Grateful Dead, normally famous live performers, gave a disastrous show). The festival was also noted for a high level of casual sex and drug use, including two overdoses, and many festival-goers stripped naked and rolled in the mud. Woodstock set an example for many future festivals, including the outdoor location and a free-wheeling spirit.

Woodstock represented for many the peak of the values of the 1960s, and was billed as \"An Aquarian Exposition\" – a reference to the popular counter-cultural belief in a dawning \"Age of Aquarius\" that would replace the antiquated values of the past. This idealism about festivals did not last long; it ended with the brutal murder, by \"Hell's Angels\" hired as security guards, of a young black man at the Altamont Free Concert in December 1969. Recent attempts to hold \"new Woodstocks\", particularly on the 25th anniversary in 1994, have been criticised for being overly commercial and for involving large corporate backers like Pepsi

    Glastonbury Music Festival

Glastonbury, a small town in the rural west of the UK, has long been associated with the mythical figure of King Arthur. This great English hero is said to rest near Glastonbury Tor (\"tor\" is an old English word for \"hill\") waiting for the call to save England in her darkest hour. It's a wonder hehasn't been woken up by the rock festival, though; this notoriously muddy and loud event is one of the mainstays of the English music scene.

Held yearly, the festival started with a small concert organised by local farm owner Michael Eavis in 1970, on his own land. Only 1500 people came, but the festival took off the next year, when tens of thousands of people attended an event billed as the \"Glastonbury Fayre\" – the old-style spelling indicating the associations with medieval Britain and ancient legend. Glastonbury is a major New Age centre, and candles, crystals, psychics, and neo-pagans are all commonly found at the festival.

Nowadays, \"Glasto\", as it's affectionately known, attracts around a hundred and fifty thousand people every year, as well as the top acts of British music. Michael Eavis continues to run the event, and has expressed worries in recent years that the crowds are becoming \"too middle-aged and respectable\", as the 70s generation ages. Nevertheless, Glastonbury still attracts huge numbers of young people, despite high prices and the invitable English rain. Channel 4 broadcasts many of the acts live on national TV, allowing everyone to get in on the event.

    ReadingLeeds Rock Music Festival

The Reading (pronounced \"red-ding\") and Leeds Music Festival is one of the oldest annual festivals in the world, growing out of an international jazz festival founded in the 1950s. The festival comes in two legs; one held in the Southern town of Reading, and the other, introduced in the 1990s, up north in Leeds, though both parts feature a virtually identical line-up of bands.

Reading has always tried to emphasise a wide range of music, from heavy metal to traditional jazz and world music, and there have sometimes been disastrous clashes when the fans of one style are stuck listening to a genre they hate. Most notoriously, the flash-in-the-pan teen pop duo Daphne and Celeste were forced off stage after having heavy objects, including a wheelchair, thrown at them after being scheduled to appear just after a performance by the hardcore metal band Slipknot. This formed part of a fine Reading tradition of throwing things at bad groups, normally urine in plastic bottles or cups. Bands have also occasionally got into arguments on stage.

Like all greenfield festivals, Reading has always been at the mercy of the weather, and has had major problems with storms and floods. It's also had problems with government – citing traffic disruptions, bad crowd control, and problems with drugs, the local conservative council effectively banned it for two years, and it was only with a Labour victory at the regional elections that the festival was restarted. Performers at Reading have spanned every generation of British music, with one of the first being the late, great Humphrey Lyttelton, jazz musician and comedian.More recent line-ups have heavily featured American bands, including famous performances by Nirvana and the Beastie Boys.

    Fuji Rock Festival

The most famous Japanese music festival, paradoxically enough, is held nowhere near its namesake Mount Fuji, but rather in the Naeba hills, near a ski resort. The landscapes are spectacularly beautiful, although exhausted fans often complain of having to trudge long distances to reach performances at seven different stages. It lasts for three days, and is considered one of the best opportunies for Japanese music fans to see Western bands live.

The festival was started in 1997, when it was located near Mt. Fuji, and almost ended its first year, after a typhoon hit the area. Nobody was killed, but thousands of festival-goers were drenched and miserable, and many fell sick and had to go to hospital. After that, the organizers decided not to risk the wrath of the mountain again and moved the event. Since 1998 the festival has largely run smoothly, and is rather better organized than most British or American events.

The line-up of bands is mostly Western, with a smattering of local Japanese acts. Unlike other famous festivals, it's always been a purely commercial event, run by the Smash Japan promotion company. Japanese music is dominated by anodyne pop and teen groups, and fans of more serious music are deeply grateful for the festival.

Crazy for Music

Tag Team Records – Music, Music, Music

Tag Team Records is a label dealing exclusively with Chinese indie groups. We talked to Matt Kagler, the manager, about the festivals this year and about the Beijing music scene.

BT: So, who did you send to Midi this year?

M: We were going to send two bands, Random K/(e) and Arrows Made of Desire, but we didn't get involved in the end because everything kept being changed around – and there was no money in it. It was supposed to be at the larger venue, then they switched it to the Midi School at the last minute. Midi's the most disorganized piece of shit festival – and you can quote me on that – they'd run things better with a festival in Ulaan Baatar. Modern Sky was much better run, but we'd elected to do Midi because we thought it would be bigger. Lots of bands from lots of labels got caught that way. Modern Sky was great, though – they did a really good job with a limited area in Haidian Park, and created a really fantastic atmosphere.

BT: So, what about the indie rock scene in China in general? Thriving, dying, how's it doing?

M: Definitely thriving. For the first time I think we can really say that it's going somewhere. Of course, things have always been happening but now there's a galvinization, a lot of people doing a lot of hard work. Bands are really touring China now, a tour circuit's building up, whereas before there was a lot of weekend warrior stuff. Bands can work and potentially make real money now. We're starting to see brands jumping on too – Converse, Bacardi, big names. Good things are happening on the scene; I'm really excited about it.

BT: Who do you think are likely to be the first Chinese bands to really breakthrough overseas.

M: It's hard to say. I'd say the most accessible Chinese group at the moment are Pet Conspiracy – they just toured Europe, they appeal to a lot of fans, they're very slick and cool. They're not on my label, so I'm being altruistic saying this! There's a lot of great music – at Tag Team we've got great music that could and has sold well abroad. I'd say there's about seven bands that could really make it big – Rebuilding the Rights of Statues, Lonely China Day, Snapline, they're great, Arrows Made of Desire. Carsick Cars are a great band developing an audience, though they're still a bit derivative. The huge success story at the moment is FM3, they've shifted 20000 units in the USA, more in Europe. But we'll see what happens.

BT: Thanks for talking to us, Matt!

    M: No problem.

    My Music Life

I'm Lorenz Kirchner, from Goettingen in Germany, a small, beautiful town. In 1997 I moved to Manchester in the northwest of England, where I studied sound recording and founded a small music production business, which I still run. Later I also did a Masters in Management in London. In 2005 I moved to Beijing and have been living here ever since.

From a fairly early age I was interested in music technology and I started to make my first recordings as a teenager. After finishing high school I considered if I should study something sensible like medicine or engineering, or do what I am passionate about. Eventually I decided to the latter. I have been doing sound engineering and music production for almost 20 years now and it still is my favourite thing to do! During and after studying at University I had to take a few part-time jobs such as regular office jobs, and I really felt a lot of people were wasting their lives in such places. Some people loved this work, though, so I guess there is a suitable job for everyone. For me music is clearly the best choice.

My favourite music is quite varied. I love Lee Hazelwood, Songs Ohia, Tindersticks and Nick Drake as well as Fugazi, The Pixies, Deftones, System of a Down, or even Happy Mondays, Orbital, and the Chemical Brothers, so a whole range of different styles. For me it is important that bring across a specific idea very clearly - perhaps better, with more emotion, than words alone could. I have listened to the music of Xie Tian Xiao, and Muma and even though I can not understand the lyrics of the songs it seems to me that they deliver interesting thoughts in a unique way. Unfortunately my Chinese is not really good enough to evaluate Chinese songs. I am not a big fan of Chinese bands who sing in (bad / unintelligeble) English with perhaps some exceptions, like Hang on the Box.

I think in China a large percentage of music is commercial pop, which is generally produced cheaply and exploited commercially in many ways often in combination with high street brands. Some of these songs are also actually very well made, but actually this type of music really only represents a very narrow part of the cultural spectrum covered by \"popular music\". Rock, punk, heavy metal, hip hop, techno, jazz, RB, reggae, country, and many more styles are all part of what commonly is known as pop music. Since most of China's pop music is actually created by a small number of companies, most of which are located in Hong Kong or Taiwan, these other styles, perhaps, offer a good alternative for an increasingly aware youth to find their own identity. Maybe this is why they are so attractive to young people in China today. Other people might get bored by following the prescribed formula of bland music tailored towards selling products, which often lacks any musical thought or intelligence.

I moved to China because music is developing very fast here. These are the pioneering days for independent music companies in China, and we're seeing things, bands and performances, here which will become legends in the future. I can't think of any other place where the enthusiasm is so fresh and there is so much still left to do to develop all the organisations required to successfully foster independent artists from grass roots level all the way to superstardom. I feel luck that I can be involved in this process and with the Midi Festival we are right at the core of it!

My current job at the Midi Festival is to make sure the sound of all the performances is recorded so it can be used to produce the live DVD of the festival. I am also responsible for providing the sound for the live broadcast of the festival which is used for the webcast and is also available to any interested broadcaster. I also help organize other aspects of the festival as required, such as dealing with sponsors and so on.

I think the Beijing Midi Festival is unique because it has such a large passionate following from all over China, and it manages to capture a spirit of freedom and friendliness and variety that is hardly matched anywhere else in China and even in other countries. I have been to festivals in Europe which were technically great and featured brilliant performances but lacked this elusive vibe. The clostest festival to Midi I can think of might be the Glastonbury festival in the UK. I think Midi takes its appeal by focusing especially on the audience and being a young Chinesefestival rather than presenting glossy mega stars which have no connection to the audience.

Rock music – or let's say alternative music, because it offers an alternative to the narrow mainstream, is still at an early stage in China. People are exploring and experimenting. There are bright sparks of talent here now, but I expect to see great things in the future. I don't think I could be anywhere else right now; it's a great honor to be here at this time and to help in these amazing discoveries.

樂(lè)隊(duì)對(duì)音樂(lè)的駕馭和編排能力在專輯中體現(xiàn)得淋漓盡致,更多人都從中感受到了奔放的青春,而英文歌詞也是在當(dāng)時(shí)流行發(fā)展中國(guó)特色的樂(lè)隊(duì)中所不常見(jiàn)的,一句“but I know the sun will shine for us”讓太多人記住了他們。

就像《Intro The Band Is So Cool》中那唯一的一句歌詞——Hello loser, the band is so cool。難道你沒(méi)聽(tīng)到嗎?Dream on until your dreams come true。

Live, Loud, and Chinese

Rock in China started in the 1980s, after Reform and Opening allowed a new artistic freedom, and young Chinese began to be able to obtain Western records, with pioneers such as Cui Jian producing striking albums. China's live-music scene didn't really began taking off until the late 1990s, though, as more venues began to spring up around Beijing. Previously performers had improvised gigs at bars or clubs not really designed for the purpose, or appropriated empty courtyards, but by 1999 there were a good dozen or more locations. Few of these survive today, but many of the groups and managers are still part of the Beijing scene.

Live performances have always been the bedrock of music, especially forms, like jazz and rock, that thrive on improvisation. The rapport built up with an audience can provide a creative energy that sparks a band to greatness. One of the criticisms levelled against manufactured pop groups such as Westlife and the Spice Girls has been that, since the members were put together by a record label and promoted straight to the big time, they lack the creativity and tension that working small live gigs helps a band form. Almost all the great groups, in contrast, were formed through the heady club experience, such as the Beatles' days in Hamburg and at the famous Cavern club in Liverpool.

For musicians, live music has also been one answer to the perennial problem of how to make a living out of their passion. Very few Chinese groups strike a successful record deal, especially those working in more radical styles, and piracy is rampant. The Chinese commercial music world is dominated by Cantopop and other twee, lifeless forms which many serious musicians view with contempt. Living off gigs, even though payments are often famously tight, can at least let a young band get by until they hopefully reach a wider audience. Some local record labels, such as Tag Team Records, have been founded to provide support for Chinese indie groups.

Beijing is the definite centre of China's artistic and musical life, although the club scene in some other cities is smaller, but vibrant. Live music in Shanghai has never taken off to the same extent as Beijing, but there are still a few good places, catering both to foreigners and locals. Wuhan is known for a number of heavy metal clubs. Many Chinese cities, though, have virtually no serious music scene at all, partly because of the magnetic pull of Beijing to young bands, who often live hand-to-mouth or work other jobs in order to survive in the big city. The hard-hitting 2007 documentary Wasted Orient, by Kevin Fritz, shows one young group going through this.

Still, Beijing music is thriving, and when it comes to the actual clubs, there's an abundance of choice nowadays. With new venues opening constantly, it's surely only a matter of time before Beijing's music scene produces a band which really makes it into the big time.
