Last month, Gizmos and Gadgets covered the Wii, an exciting new gaming product developed by Nintendo which utilizes motion detection to incorporate real life movements into video games. Continuing with their active-play philosophy, Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto announced a new video game for the Wii that is looking to expand the scope of the console's real life playability. At Nintendo's E3 press conference, Wii Fit (also known as Wii Fitness in Europe) was unveiled. And like the Wii itself, Wii Fit is on its way to becoming a highly successful gaming phenomenon.

Nintendo released the Wii Fit as part of the new exergaming genre. The game is designed to function with the new Wii Balance Board peripheral. Miyamoto first described the game as a \"way to help get families exercising together.\" The game idea had been included in Miyamoto's original design document for the entire Wii Series. Miyamoto has stated that the Wii Fit had been in development for about a year. The Wii Balance Board took almost two years to develop.

The Wii Balance Board is a great addition to the Wii series. It is basically a low-level platform/board that the gamer can stand on. Through highly responsive pressure sensors, the Board is able to measure a gamer's weight and their center of gravity. It can also calculate their body mass index. Used in conjunction with Wii Fit, the Board can be used to perform about 40 different activities. The Wii Fit will feature exercises divided into four categories: aerobic exercise, muscle conditioning, yoga poses, and balance games. Activities which were actually shown at E3 included yoga exercises, hula hooping, ski jumping, jogging, tightrope walking, push ups, and step aerobics. Nintendo has stated that most of these activities focus on providing the gamer with a \"core\" workout, an exercise method that emphasizes slow, controlled motions.

Given the traditional stationary nature of most video games, innovations like Wii Fit and the Wii Balance Board are a positive development in gaming. Aside from encouraging gamers to get up and move around, it also appeals to a much broader demographic interested in new ways of having fun and spending time with people. The Wii Fit was released in Japan on December 1, 2007 and sold over a quarter of a million copies in the first week alone. It is set to be released in North America and Europe in early 2008.
