游客中心距離絲綢之路上的玉門關(guān)遺址僅200m，此處原有一棟1990 年代供管理人員休息辦公的房子，形態(tài)與遺址極為不協(xié)調(diào)。改造設(shè)計(jì)希望呈現(xiàn)出玉門關(guān)遺址的歷史厚重感和大漠的荒涼，盡量縮減建筑體量，將大部分面積設(shè)于地下，避免建筑對(duì)遺址的干擾，同時(shí)巧妙利用場(chǎng)地內(nèi)6m 的高差。改造設(shè)計(jì)也重新梳理了停車場(chǎng)和游客中心與遺址本體的關(guān)系，借助基地高差將由停車場(chǎng)至游客中心的步道分為3 段，游客拾級(jí)而下，遠(yuǎn)處的遺址逐漸從視線中消失，游客中心映入眼簾。進(jìn)入院內(nèi)的景觀塔，又可從高處一覽玉門關(guān)全景，隨后步入景區(qū)近距離欣賞遺址。

外墻材料選用“水洗石”，恰到好處地詮釋了建筑的地域特征。景觀也以呈現(xiàn)戈壁風(fēng)貌為主，僅做提示性和遮擋性的墻體、通往入口的小徑和幾處精心設(shè)置的石頭和綠化。

Aiming to present the profound history of the ruins and the vastness of the desert,the design features a layout with most parts located underground,so that the building poses little disturbance to the site.The path between the parking lot and the visitor centre has been divided into three sectors by the altitude difference,where visitors' sight shifts from the ruins to the visitor centre.In the viewing tower of the courtyard,visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Yumen Pass.

The washed granolithic finish on the fa?ade reveals local characteristics of the region.The landscape design remains low-profile to highlight the scene of the Gobi desert.
