I started early,took my dog,

And visited the sea;

The mermaids in the basement

Came out to look at me,

And frigates in the upper floor

Extended hempen hands,

Presuming me to be a mouse

Aground,upon the sands.

But no man moved me till the tide

Went past my simple shoe,

And past my apron and my belt,

And past my boddice too,

And made as he would eat me up

As wholly as a dew

Upon a dandelion's sleeve—

And then I started too.

And he—he followed close behind;

I felt his silver heel

Upon my ankle,—then my shoes

Would overflow with pearl.

Until we met the solid town,

No man he seemed to know;

And bowing with a mighty look

At me,the sea withdrew

海底的美人魚

出來看著我，

海面上的帆船

向我伸出漬麻的手臂，

想象我變成一只老鼠

擱淺，在沙灘上。

可是沒有人來帶走我，直到潮水

漫過我的簡樸的鞋子，

漫過我的圍裙，我的腰帶，

也漫過我的胸衣，

他好像要將我囫圇吞下

似一滴

在蒲公英的袖子上的露珠——

然后我又動身。

而他——他緊緊地跟在后面；

我感覺到了他銀色的腳踵

漫過我的腳踝，——然后我的鞋子

好似珍珠四溢。

直到我遇見堅(jiān)固的小城，

他似乎不認(rèn)識任何人；

帶著剛毅的表情

向我鞠躬，海退潮了
