Baseball was always where my heart lay. However, my father did not care for baseball. Two activities he enjoyed were golfing and fishing, neither of which I considered a real sport. He didn’t talk much and he wasn’t good at expressing himself. To be honest, I wasn’t entirely certain if he cared about me. In a way, my father was like a familiar stranger I saw every day.
One day, watching the play on television made me want a glove of my own. To my surprise, my father said he wanted one, too. He was on the side, but then again, one of the famous pitchers (投手) on the Mets was even fatter. So I thought, why not?
We bought two gloves, and that evening, he suggested we go out to the courtyard and toss (擲) the ball around. I’d already practiced catching and throwing at school, but I could tell this was the first time for my father, because every time he caught the ball, it landed directly in his palm. If you’ve ever caught a ball with a baseball glove, you know how much this hurts.
But my father caught ball after ball this way. After about five minutes, I told him I’d had enough. It wasn’t out of mercy, but for my own self-interest. Neighborhood kids were watching and would no doubt laugh at me later for having an old man who didn’t know how to properly catch a baseball. When my father took the glove off, his palm was red and swollen.
Dad, who passed away 11 years ago, never told me he loved me. But that sound of the baseball landing his hand over and over again—it spoke its own tender language, though at the time, all I felt was shame.

Beach volleyball is one of those sports that can be an exciting game to play and watch. It’s really easy, and all you need is sand, a net and a group of people, of any age or fitness level, who want to have fun.
Beach volleyball can be played with as few as two people in each team, making a total of four people. However, if you are less skilled and experienced in the game, it will be easier to play with a larger team. The more players you have, the less ground each person will be responsible for covering and the more time they will have to recover between shots. If you only have a few players, each of you will get a lot of running for the ball after each volley (截球). If you are looking for a relaxing, fun, low-key experience, choose larger teams.
Beach volleyball is similar to regular volleyball in its rules. However, even experienced volleyball players do not realize how much more difficult it is to run and jump on sand. Since it is harder to move quickly on sand than a hard surface, play will be much slower than regular volleyball on a court. When an athlete trains for beach volleyball, he will focus on building lower body strength as well as upper body strength. Strengthening his legs is extremely important. This improves the player’s ability to move quickly and accurately (準(zhǔn)確地) on sand despite the resistance. The ability to jump high and land without injury (受傷) is necessary for beach volleyball players.
Whether you are in it for the competition, or just to have a great time with your friends, beach volleyball can be very exciting and fun. You may start out with friends and may soon fall in love with the sport.
5. How many teammates will make you feel most relaxed when playing beach volleyball?
A. Two.????????????????????????? B. Four.????????????????????????? C. Six.???????????????????????????? D. Eleven.
6. Why is playing beach volleyball much slower than playing regular volleyball?
A. It is not easy to move on sand.??????????????????????? B. Beach volleyball has a larger court.
C. A team of beach volleyball is larger.????????????? D. The height of beach volleyball players are shorter.
7. What does the author think of beach volleyball?
A. Special.???????????????????? B. Difficult.?????????????????? C. Interesting.???????????????? D. Unpopular.
8. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. What beach volleyball is.
B. How to become a good beach volleyball player
C. Why beach volleyball is one of the amazing sports.
D. The differences between beach volleyball and regular volleyball.
