Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky have praised the “heroic efforts”of everyday Australians who have rescued trapped flood victims in Queensland and northern New South Wales.

The flooding crisis is particularly close to the couple’s hearts as they live in flood-affected Byron Bay with their three kids. “Northern Rivers and beyond had been hit by the worst floods in history.”the famous star wrote on Instagram on Wednesday night alongside photos of flooded streets.“Lots of love to everyone who has been affected and a big shout out to all who had a boat or jet ski(水上摩托艇)and launched straight into rescue missions without hesitation. True heroes.”

On Wednesday morning, Elsa thanked emergency workers and volunteers who risked their lives to save others trapped by severe floodwaters.

“People have spent hours waiting on rooftops to be rescued,”Elsa wrote on Instagram.“Thanks to all those who are able to help save people and animals trapped by the floodwaters, you are the real heroes. So amazing to watch how everyone pulls together in a disaster and helps the community.”She added:“Our hearts go out to those affected by the floods. Stay safe.”

TV personality Deborah Hutton shared her thoughts for those impacted by the horror floods, writing:“My heart goes out to all those affected by this unusual weather pattern and the record floods.”

Meanwhile, Bondi Vet(獸醫(yī))star Dr Chris Brown encouraged Aussies to keep an eye out for displaced and injured wildlife.“Try to remember that just because they live their lives outdoors doesn’t mean they’re equipped to handle extreme weather events like these. Lisa Hywood remembers the first time she ever set eyes on a pangolin(穿山甲). It was in 1994, and she had just founded the Tikki Hywood Trust, a wildlife conservation shelter in Zimbabwe. One morning, someone dropped off a strange-looking, injured creature that had been taken from an illegal trader. She recalls. “And I looked at this animal and I thought it’s like no other mammal(哺乳動物) that I’ve ever encountered.”

Since then, many pangolins have been brought to Hywood’s shelter doorstep.“The shy creature is the mammal traded illegally most in the world”, says Jeff Flocken, a regional director with the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Almost a million pangolins were traded illegally in the past 10 years. All eight species of this animal, which are found over large parts of Africa and Asia, are facing extinction, according to Jonathan Baillie, a pangolin specialist at the International Union for Conservation of Nature in London.“As the number of Asian species declines”, Baillie says, “there is an increasing demand for African pangolins”.

The fast speed with which the pangolin is being traded illegally is now pushing governments and conservationists to make efforts to get the message out that it has to be saved.“That’s not easy when many people haven’t heard of the pangolin”, says Rosemarie Gnam of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The agency is stepping up coverage of pangolins on its website, to include interactive maps and pages for children to discover the mammal. There’s also an effort to list all eight species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and another to make it illegal to trade the pangolin under CITES, the multilateral(多邊的)treaty to protect these endangered animals.

For Hywood, the effort to save the pangolin is vital. In the two decades since that first scared and injured pangolin was dropped off in a bag, she has created a shelter to protect pangolins.(314)

Studies, including 2 million adults worldwide, show that eating two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables daily is likely the ideal amount for a longer life. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables help reduce risk for many chronic(慢性的)diseases that are leading causes of death, including cardiovascular diseases(心腦血管疾?。゛nd cancers.

Yet, only about one in ten adults eat enough fruits or vegetables, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.“While the American Heart Association recommends five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, consumers seldom pay attention to what defines ideal intake of fruits and vegetables like the recommended amount,”said lead study author Dr. Wang, a professor at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Wang and his teammates analyzed data from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, two studies including more than 100,000 adults followed for up to 30 years. Both datasets included detailed dietary information repeatedly collected every two years. For this analysis, researchers also pooled data on fruit and vegetable intake and death from 26 studies, including about 2 million participants from 29 countries globally. Analysis of all studies revealed: Intake of about five servings of fruits and vegetables daily was associated with the lowest risk of death, and two servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables a day was associated with the greatest longevity.

Dr. Wang said this study identifies an ideal intake level of fruits and vegetables and supports the evidence-based public health message of“5-a-day”, meaning people should ideally consume five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.“This amount likely offers the most benefit in terms of preventing major chronic diseases and is a relatively achievable intake for the general public,”he said.“Not all foods considered to be fruits or vegetables offer the same benefits. For example, starchy(含有淀粉的)vegetables, such as corn, fruit juices and potatoes are not associated with reduced risk of death from specific chronic diseases. However, green leafy fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C such as berries and carrots, show benefits.”

    32. How can people live a longer life?

    A. By eating healthier foods and doing more exercises.

    B. By eating five servings of fruits and vegetables.

    C. By eating 2 servings of vegetables and 3 servings of fruits.

    D. By eating foods which can reduce risk for chronic diseases.

    33. What can be inferred about most Americans from the second paragraph?

    A. They don’t eat healthy food.

    B. They don’t know an ideal diet.

    C. They don’t eat as suggested.

    D. They don’t eat fruits and vegetables.

    34. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 3?

    A. To present a vivid article to readers.

    B. To help the researchers analyze data.

    C. To tell people to eat more fruits and vegetables.

    D. To make the finding more persuasive.

    35. Which food is the most beneficial to prevent diseases according to Dr. Wang?

    A. Leafy carrots.? ? ? ? B. Fruit juice.

    C. Starchy potato.? ? D. Tasty corn.

At the beginning of every year, we promise ourselves that we’ll kick the habit of procrastination(putting things off). We make lists, buy journals, try new apps, but no matter what, we often wind up falling into the same cycle of delay and avoidance day after day. Research shows that people tend to favor short-term mood over long-term goals and that they’re more likely to put off tasks that don’t have quick rewards.? ? ? 36

First, identify small goals. Set a goal to work on something for a short, fixed amount of time—say, 10 minutes. To make your goals more organized and structured, try to make a list of six things to work on the following day at the end of each workday, putting the most important the first.? ? ? 37? ? ? Finish off those things and only those things the next day.

Next, if you’re trying to figure out the best way to deal with tasks, use natural patterns to your advantage.? ? ? 38? ? ? If you are not energetic at midday, take that time to organize and create your list for the next day. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Research shows self-pity can help you handle procrastination-related stress. Remember every success is just that: a success! If you’re procrastinating wellness and rest, plan ahead!? ? ? 39? ? ? This way you can work toward your time away and feel secure that all your goals at work are met.

40? ? ? One treatment approach, called cognitive(認(rèn)知的) behavioral treatment, can help improve the skills by focusing on current barriers and solutions to those problems.

    A. List them out in order of true importance.

    B. To fight procrastination, here’s what you can do.

    C. To finish tasks timely, quick rewards need to be offered.

    D. Finally, when dealing with procrastination, treat it seriously.

    E. If you’re a morning person, do important tasks in the morning.

    F. Finally, if you can’t manage procrastination alone, consult a doctor.

    G. Block out vacations in advance and put systems in place with co-workers.

“Watch out!You nearly broad sided that car!”My father shouted angrily at me.“Can’t you do anything right?”Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me. I wasn’t prepared for another battle.” I saw the car.“Dad. Please don’t shout at me when I’m driving.”My voice was measured, sounding far calmer than I really felt. Dad glared(怒視)at me, and then turned away and settled back.

At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my thoughts. Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The sound of distant thunder seemed to echo(附和)my anxiety. What could I do about him?

Dad had been a lumberjack(伐木工)in Washington and Oregon. He had enjoyed being outdoors and had enjoyed in testing his strength against the forces of nature. He had entered backbreaking lumberjack competitions and the shelves in his house were filled with prizes that proved his powers.

The years marched on and on. The first time he couldn’t lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, trying his best to lift it. He became easily annoyed whenever anyone joked about his advancing age, or when he couldn’t do something he had done as a younger man.Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital. At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky; he survived... But something inside Dad died. His enthusiasm for life was gone. He refused to follow doctor’s orders. Suggestions and offers of help were turned aside. The number of visitors thinned, and finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.

My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come to live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and simple atmosphere would help him adjust.

    第一節(jié) 參考范文

    Dear Jack,

Knowing that you’re going back to the US, I’m writing to express my gratitude.

In the past three years, you have provided me with much valuable help. Not only did you help me with my English but also you taught me how to play basketball. Had it not been for your help, I wouldn’t have made such great progress in English, nor would I have been able to keep so fit as well as having such a positive attitude towards life.

Many thanks for what you have done for me. Wish you a happy journey home. (96 words)

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    第二節(jié) 參考范文

Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did. I became impatient and moody. Something had to be done. I sat down with the phone book and called each of the mental health clinics listed. Just when I was giving up hope, one of them suggested that we adopt a dog. I drove to the animal shelter. One skinny old dog, whose eyes were calm and clear, caught and held my attention.

I drove home with the dog from the animal shelter. But as I presented the dog to Dad, he just turned back toward the house. Anger rose inside me.“You’d better get used to him, Dad. He’s staying!’At those words Dad’s eyes narrowed. We stood glaring at each other when suddenly the dog struggled toward my Dad, sitting in front of him. Patiently it waited. Sympathy finally replaced the anger in Dad’s eyes while he was on his knees hugging the animal. It was the beginning of a warm friendship. Gradually Dad’s bitterness weakened and his peace of mind restored.
