Tropical rainforests (熱帶雨林) are home to native peoples who rely on their surroundings for food, shelter, and medicines. Today very few forest people in many areas like the Philippines, Papua New Guinea live in traditional ways; most have been displaced by outside settlers or have been forced to give up their lifestyles by governments.

Of the remaining forest people, the Amazon supports the largest native or native populations, although these people, too, have been affected by the modern world. While they still depend on the forest for traditional hunting and gathering, most Amerindians, as American native people are called, grow crops, use western goods, and make regular trips to towns and cities to bring foods and products to market. In Africa there are native forest people sometimes known as pygmies. The tallest of these people, also called the Mbuti, are not more than 5 feet in height. Their small size enables them to move about the forest more quickly than taller people.

Tropical rainforests have supported humans since ancient times. Although forest life cannot be described as easy, these peoples have built their lives around the surrounding forest and its systems. Still, these forest people can teach us a lot about the rainforest. Their knowledge of medicinal plants used for treating illness is valuable, and they have a great understanding of the ecology (生態(tài)學(xué)) of the Amazon rainforest. As a result, they are a great storehouse (寶庫(kù)) of the knowledge about the forest. They know the medicinal functions of plants and understand the value of the forest as an undamaged ecosystem. As forests fall, these native peoples lose their homes and culture, resulting in the drop of the native population.

    1. Where do the greatest number of native rainforest peoples live today?

    A. In the Philippines. B. In Africa. C. In the Amazon. D. In Papua New Guinea.

    2. What do we know about most Amerindians?

    A. They know little about growing some crops.

    B. They make trips to towns and cities for trade.

    C. They would like to use eastern goods in daily life.

    D. They seldom know traditional hunting and gathering.

    3. What can we learn about forest people from Paragraph 3?

    A. They can get benefits from rainforests. B. They know how to build storehouses.

    C. They live an easy and comfortable life. D. They have a good knowledge of medicine.

    4. What is the purpose of this text?

    A. To make an advertisement for tropical rainforests.

    B. To introduce the lifestyles of the native forest people.

    C. To spread the knowledge and value of the forest plants.

    D. To raise the awareness of protecting tropical rainforests.

A rare wild flower is being re-established in Devon fields thanks to some four-legged helpers. A charity called Planflife has employed donkeys as “ecosystem engineers” to encourage the return of the endangered small-flowered catchfly (捕蟲草).

The catchfly was once found all across Britain but now it only grows in small areas of Wales and the south and west of England. Experts blame its decrease on modern farming practices. The flower grew around the edges of sandy fields where farmers grew their crops, but because of weedkillers that were used to remove “unwanted” plants, its habitat has largely disappeared.

Plantlife teamed up with the Donkey Sanctuary, a charity that looks after donkeys in the UK and around the world. It owns several farms across Devon and the UK, where it takes care of hundreds of rescued donkeys, as well as maintaining habitats for other wildlife. More than 20,000 seeds (種子) have been scattered on fields at the Sanctuarys main Devon farm, and it is hoped that many will grow into plants this summer. They will provide food for some threatened bird species. Plantlife then aims to get the donkeys themselves involved, testing whether catchfly seeds benefit from being pressed into the ground as the donkeys take their exercise. Many plants have seeds that must be pressed into the soil in order to grow.

“Were incredibly thankful to partners like the Donkey Sanctuary who are helping these fantastically rare wild flowers come back from the edge of extinction,” Cath Shellswell of Plantlife told The Guardian newspaper. “We look forward to seeing small-flowered catchfly return and we are working with the Sanctuary to ensure that this tiny plant has a bright future.”

    1. Why are donkeys employed in Devon fields?

    A. To work in the fields. B. To bring back the catchfly.

    C. To avoid extinction. D. To raise crop production.

    2. What caused the decrease of the catchflys population?

    A. Soil loss. B. Water pollution. C. Climate change. D. Modern agriculture.

    3. How do donkeys help the catchfly come back?

    A. By pressing its seeds into the soil. B. By working the land.

    C. By providing food for it. D. By spreading its seeds.

    4. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Donkeys Help Fields Flower Again B. Farmland Becomes a Natural Habitat

    C. The Agricultural Forms on Devon Farms D. The Bright Future of the Catchfly

    B

Louis Druehl lives in Bamfield. He works at a seaweed (海藻) farm, where long ropes of seaweed grow under the water. He has been farming kelp since 1982, which is brown sea weed.

Druehl has studied seaweed for a long time. Hes even written a book explaining in detail what it can do for humans. Druehl says the world is turning to seaweed as a solution to climate change. “People have discovered seaweed, he said. “It has discovered us. It benefits humans, so we should take full advantage of it.

Seaweed can be used to produce energy and make plastics that can be recycled. Besides, it takes carbon out of the environment. This is good for the health of the planet. Some researchers say seaweed is even better for the environment than trees are. Seaweed doesnt need fertilizers (肥料). It doesnt need fresh water or land. And it grows fast. Seaweed could also be a global food source. Carlos Duarte is a professor of ecology. “To feed the world population by 2050, in a way that doesnt harm nature, there is only one way, he says. “Seaweed farming. Seaweed farming is not new. Native people of Canada have been farming it for thousands of years. But many of them have left to find other work. Now, the rapidly growing seaweed industry could bring jobs to many people. This includes those who lost their jobs during COVID-19.

Seaweed may slow climate change. But there are risks. When it rots (腐爛), it releases carbon. And too much seaweed could affect how much light reaches underwater creatures. Halley Froehlich works at the University of California, Santa Barbara. When it comes to climate change, Halley says seaweed “can be a part of the solution, but its not a solution on its own to climate change.

However, Im on Druehl side. The industry of seaweed will surely have a bright future though some people are questioning its effects.

    5. Why did Druehl write the book?

    A. To introduce seaweeds importance. B. To warn climate change is serious.

    C. To ask people to face climate change. D. To invite people to his seaweed farm.

    6. What does Carlos think of seaweed farming?

    A. Its acceptable for a long time. B. Its environment-friendly.

    C. It costs farmers very little. D. It offers employment chances.

    7. What does Halley want to express about climate change?

    A. Seaweed can be affected by it. B. It can do harm to sea creatures.

    C. Seaweed can help fight it partly. D. It depends on seaweeds carbon.

    8. What is the authors attitude towards seaweeds effects?

    A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Careful.

When people think of plants, they usually think of gardens, parks, or even jungles (叢林). One place that does not usually come to mind is the desert. However, some deserts contain many plants that are able to grow and survive under difficult conditions (環(huán)境).

Deserts can reach temperatures of 50 degrees or more in the daytime and can also drop below 0 degrees at night. This is a huge temperature difference under which desert plants have to live. Besides the high and low temperatures, all deserts receive very little water in the form of rain; sometimes it doesnt rain for months. So, how do desert plants get water when there is no rain?

There are three main ways plants survive in the desert. First, some desert plants grow without leaves. Others have developed special ways of storing whatever water they can find, such as growing a waxy (蠟質(zhì)的) leaf covering that helps keep water inside the leaf. These plants can survive for weeks or months on the water collected from just one rainfall.

A second way desert plants survive even in the most difficult conditions is by growing very long roots. These roots spread out and search for any water they can find. Once they find water, the roots suck up as much as they can and then hold it, only allowing the plant above the ground to have small amounts at a time.

The third way plants survive in the desert is by “sleeping”. Some plants can turn off almost all their processes and just remain inactive, almost as if dead, while they wait for rain. When the rain does come, they quickly drink up every drop they possibly can and burst back into activity.

    2﹒有的植物確能生長(zhǎng),它們的特點(diǎn)和方法:特殊的葉子、長(zhǎng)根、休眠。

    范例展示

Deserts are not suitable places for plants to grow: one reason is the very large difference in temperature, and the other one is the lack of water. However, some plants do grow and survive under desert conditions. Some have special leaves, some grow long roots and some live by remaining inactive until conditions improve.

You still need a better reason to plant a tree?

Police arent cheap and neither are lawyers, judges, and all the other layers that make up the justice system. But trees and some grass, in comparison, are really cheap, and they prove to be effective in lighting crimes (犯罪).

Many cities plant vegetation (植物) along roadways to help take in rainwater. After tracking 14 types of crime in nearby areas, Michelle Kondo, a social scientist found that a variety of crimes, such as theft and fights in those areas decreased to 27 percent, an incredible 18 percent fall. Kondo believed planting was able to scare away potential criminals.

Kondos study also worked on the connection between grassland care and decrease of the crime in downtown areas. It shows that if you have the time and money to water your plants, you probably live in a neighborhood that sees less crime. Kondo argued that caution (謹(jǐn)慎) of the local people suggested by the organized vegetation helped to frighten away bad guys, by announcing to would-be criminals that there are “eyes on the street that care for their neighborhood and would be more likely to report a crime.

We already know vegetation is beautiful to look at and can help improve mood and health. Now we can add crime-fighting to the list of vegetations many benefits. Therefore, are you ready to plant a tree?
