Located on the ground floor of a residential building in the quiet neighbourhood of Yishun is Just Ants, titled as Singapore’s first physical ant shop, run by 41-year-old John Ye. It is a tiny store, about the size of two bathrooms, and is easy to miss. Ant enthusiasts, however, know exactly where to find it, and frequent one of the few places in the country that can cater to their unconventional hobby.

It displays tanks of various sizes with about 30 species of ants, and sells carpenter ants for SG$15($11)to SG$75($55). A full colony of ants in a tank can cost up to SG$200($147). Inside, the store’s shelves are lined with necessities for ant-keeping.“Discover their hidden world,”a framed quote sits on one of the store’s shelves, inviting customers in.

To customers, the store is a“one-stop-shop for all your ant-keeping needs”but for Ye, it’s a hobby-turned-business. His fascination(癡迷)with ants started with an ant colony he got from his brother in law in 2017.“Tiny as they are, they have an immense character, because of which they’re hardworking and never give up,”Ye said,“Many think ants are nothing but disgusting pests but I wish people could see how admirable they are. They have a strategy for everything from forming into a ball shape to cross rivers to uniting as a colony.”

While most of his friends thought he was muddleheaded for leaving a stable job for something that could not be regarded as rice bowl, Ye began collecting his own ants and starting more colonies in awe. Ye goes through a painstaking process to acquire the ants, hunting down ants in neighborhoods, feeding the ants every two to three days.

He kept the store open despite the effects of the pandemic(大流行?。゛nd business started to pick up in August with a customer base gradually building, enough to cover the store’s expenses.“The most important objective is to change the mindsets of people,”he said.

While losing their appeal among young consumers engaged in other options of recreation like room escape games, who said KTV no longer holds the attraction that it used to for them, karaoke in China is becoming more popular with middle-aged and elderly people, Worker’s Daily reported.

The decline of KTV is partly on account of the rise of new KTV services, including sing-along apps on smartphones, which allow people to sing anytime anywhere, and mini KTV bars, which have a sound-proofed private space of less than two square meters and can be found in many shopping malls.

While the passion(熱情)among the young for karaoke is decreasing, more middle-aged and elderly people are now rushing to KTV clubs. According to statistics jointly released by Koubei, Alibaba’s platform for local life services, and Elime, a takeaway-ordering platform, in 2019, the number of consumers aged above 50 who showed great love for karaoke in the afternoon was 20 percent higher than that of young consumers.

This may be down to the fact that the older folks also love singing, and carry out most of their recreational activities during the day, according to Mr. Zhao, an operation officer of a KTV club in Huilongguan, Changping district in Beijing.

63-year-old Zhang Baogang said that it cost him just over 100 yuan(about $15.5)to sing and chat with friends in a karaoke room for the whole afternoon, which he enjoyed much more than spending time in a park. A woman explained that she went to karaoke clubs to make new friends and renew her friendship with her old friends, and didn’t care much about whether she could sing well or not.

To attract more middle-aged and elderly consumers, some KTV parlors have added more songs favoured by middle-aged and senior people to their collections, and offered discounts and sales promotions.

    28. What makes young people like KTV less than before?

    A. They have more choices.

    B. They don’t like singing.

    C. They prefer playing games.

    D. They’ve no time for recreation.

    29. What does the underlined word“that”in paragraph 3 refers to?

    A. The number. B. The passion.

    C. The platform. D. The services.

    30. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us?

    A. The prices for karaoke rooms.

    B. The environment of the KTV.

    C. The advantages of joining the club.

    D. The reason why the old like KTV.

    31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A. To introduce the industry of KTV.

    B. To describe a social phenomenon.

    C. To show the elderly’s living problems.

    D. To discuss the hobbies of the elderly.

    D

Some behaviors, like sitting, make up the vast majority of our waking day. Contrary to the common philosophy that it is a problem, given that too much sitting time has been linked to greater risk of diabetes(糖尿病), heart disease, death rate and even some cancers, for many people, their own judgments and feelings about their quality of life, known as subjective well-being, may be more important and relevant for informing their health decisions and behaviors than potentially developing chronic(慢性的)diseases.

Subjective well-being refers to an individual’s(個人的)own evaluation of their quality of life. It includes concepts like self-acceptance and life satisfaction. Interestingly, these evaluations can conflict with physical health outcomes. For example, a person could have diabetes but still report good subjective well-being, while someone with no physical health conditions may report poor subjective well-being. That’s why evaluating subjective well-being is vital for painting a whole picture of health.

Relatively little research has examined the relationships between sitting behavior and subjective well-being. Exploring these relationships is important, as different contexts of sitting --such as socializing and screen time-- may produce different feelings or judgments of subjective well-being, unlike relationships between physical health and sitting behavior, which tend to be more consistent.

For example, screen time was consistently and negatively associated with subjective well-being. However, categories like socializing, playing an instrument and reading actually showed positive associations with subjective well-being. These results differ from the traditional health-related sitting behaviour research, in which all sitting behaviour is viewed as harmful to health.

Our review suggests that some types of sitting behaviour may be beneficial to quality of life. Rather, not all sitting is the same in terms of subjective well-being. So when people work towards reducing their sitting time, they should consider not just how much to reduce, but what kind to reduce.

    32. What do people usually think of sitting too long?

    A. It’s deadly.____B. It’s relaxing.

    C. It’s harmful.____D. It’s beneficial.

    33. How do we judge whether a person is healthy or not?

    A. From mental and physical health.

    B. From someone’s self-evaluation.

    C. From someone’s self-acceptance.

    D. From the physical health outcomes.

    34. What’s the relationship between sitting behavior and subjective well-being?

    A. Their relationship is always consistent.

    B. They always conflict with each other.

    C. They have nothing to do with each other.

    D. Types of sitting influence subjective well-being.

    35. What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Subjective well-being matters in people’s life.

    B. All sitting behaviors are not harmful to health.

    C. Too much sitting develops chronic diseases.____

    D. Subjective well-being disagrees with physical health.____

Some audience covered their mouth to hide their shock, others’ mouths dropped open in surprise. How could he play like this?

By the second set, it had become obvious that Dustin Brown(by that time everyone knew his name)was beating Nadal effortlessly. So there were louder cheers for Brown. Even Ben had started cheering for the“weird”now.

Ben’s uncle was visiting Ben’s family that evening. As he saw all this from the TV screen, he said,“Look at all these envious people. They are so happy that an accomplished person is getting beaten.”

根據(jù)NEED部分“A3/A4 paper and pens(Or alternatively, you might want to use black paper and colored chalk to create a more effective visual image.”

由INSTRUCTIONS部分的“In their groups, ask students to research...A useful website to use may be the World Health Organization(WHO)website”可知,選C項。

由第二段中“Discover their hidden world”以及第三段的倒數(shù)第三行“..but I wish people could see how admirable they are. ”故選B項。

由“While most of his friends thought he was muddleheaded for leaving a stable job for something that could not be regarded as rice bowl...”

由第四段中的“Ye goes through a painstaking process to acquire the ants...”可知過程是困難的,又由第五段中的 “...business started to pick up in August with a customer base gradually building”可知這個店是有前景的,故選B項。

Exploring these relationships is important, as different contexts of sitting--such as socializing and screen time-may produce different feelings or judgments of subjective well-being...

    44. A根據(jù)前文“for not only did I struggle with reading out the words clearly”中的struggle以及embarrassing 可知,作者會有撞頭(hit sb. on the head)的動作,可知這件事對作者太難了。

    45. D由后文的... like trembling and a pale face 可知發(fā)抖和臉色蒼白是撞擊頭部的伴隨性的癥狀(symptoms)。

in one’s 30s(在某人三十幾歲時)為固定搭配。

因see...as...(將……

    NOTICE

With the high school life coming to an end, considering we students are having a new life, our school has invited Professor Wang to give a lecture about how to make us live a more meaningful life.

The lecture, aimed at helping us students lead a positive life as well as escape from being overwhelmed by negative feelings, will take place in the hall, on the Second Floor of the Teaching Building. Professor Wang, an experienced expert in psychology, will share some simple but practical advice with us then.

If you are available, don’t forget to attend the lecture at 6:00 p.m. this Friday. Best wishes and good luck for you!

That evening, when Ben’s dad went back,he noticed something wrong with Ben.Tom didn’t greet him excitedly and shared what he watched as he usually did. Instead, he lay on the sofa, unwilling to make any comments on the game. Feeling puzzled, Dad approached Ben, patted him on the back softly and gently asked“What happened, my little one?”Rising to his feet, Ben explained what happened after hesitating for a while.“ It was not until then that I realized I shouldn’t cheer for the failure. I didn’t really understand the spirit of sports.”Ben replied. In low spirits, Ben headed for his bedroom.

Ben entered his bedroom, dragging his legs. As Ben slipped into his bed, ready to squeeze himself into the blanket, Dad held him into his arms tightly, whispering in his ears:“My dear, don’t blame yourself or other audience any more. You were not cheering because a great man was falling.”With a confused expression, Ben raised his head as his father continued:“You cheered because that‘weirdo’showed everyone that even the best can be beaten if you try hard, no matter how you look. Brown gave you hope!”It suddenly occurred to Ben that that was the real spirit of sports which always gave people hope and strength.
