Everyone gets anxious when the world takes an uncertain turn. And often， we treat that anxiety with a little panic buying.

A study published last year in the Journal of Consumer Research found that people buy things in troubled times as a means of keeping control over their lives. The researchers noted that utility items—specifically， cleaning products—tend to move most quickly from store shelves. The hoarding （囤積） of toilet paper， as perhaps the most fundamental cleaning product， may represent our most fundamental fears. An invisible enemy moves slowly and quietly towards us. We need to hold on to something in uncertain times. Maybe a hoard of toilet paper brings promises.

The thing is that its not actually going anywhere. For all the sharp words and even sharper elbows thrown around by the crazy toilet paper shoppers， they seem to be missing one essential fact： There is no toilet paper shortage.

As The New York Times points out， shop owners that see their shelves emptied often fill up the shelves again in a day， often in just a few hours.

“You are not using more of it. You are just filling up your closet with it，” Jeff Anderson， president of paper product manufacturer Precision Paper Converters， tells The Times.

The thing is that the toilet paper?obsessed shoppers have been infected with something many times more contagious （傳染性的） than any coronavirus： fear.

“People are social creatures. We look to each other for cues for what is safe and what is dangerous，” Steven Taylor， a clinical psychologist at the University of British Columbia， tells Fox News. “And when you see someone in the store panic?buying， that can cause a fear contagion effect. People become anxious ahead of the actual infection. They havent thought about the bigger picture， like what are the consequences of hoarding toilet paper.”

Christopher Reeve was born on September 25，1952， in New York City. His mother was a journalist and his father was a teacher， novelist， poet， and scholar. He studied at Cornell University in New York， and had various stage and television roles before becoming universally known as the star of Superman.

The unfortunate accident that brought Reeve down happened on May 27， 1995. Christopher learned to ride horses while acting in the 1985 movie Anna Karenina. Then， he was a very strong athlete and an avid horseman. He was riding his horse， Buck. His horse jumped the first two fences in the course successfully， and they approached the third. However， for some reason， Buck suddenly stopped as they were about to reach the fence. The sudden stop threw Christopher Reeve. The Superman actor landed head first on the other side of the fence injuring his body. After the accident， he was left paralyzed（癱瘓） from the neck down.

Lets learn some facts about the hero.

Reeve is the youngest actor ever to be cast as Superman as he was only 24 years old when he first starred as the character in Richard Donners movie Superman.? He was nine years old when he found his passion for acting. And he was the first actor to play the role of Superman to have been born after the character was created in 1938.

Christopher Reeve refused to wear fake muscles under the suit and continuously worked out during the entire shooting of the movie Superman. The director and producers of the movie auditioned（試演） more than 200 actors before finalizing Reeve for the role of Superman.

He and his wife Dana opened a center， the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center， devoted to teaching paralyzed people to live more independently in Short Hills， New Jersey.

Unfortunately fans favourite superman Christopher Reeve died of heart failure on October 10， 2004.

When people sit together at night and enjoy the glorious moon， an ancient poem， Prelude to Water Melody， is often read for this occasion. Critics say its probably the best poem about the Mid?Autumn Festival. Lets just focus on its most famous five lines to make some analysis.

In the first two lines of the five， the writer is comparing the life of a man to the changing face of the moon. In Chinese culture the moon is always considered to be a perfect carrier of emotions like nostalgia （懷舊） and longing for family reunion. A full moon symbolizes perfection and unity， while a gloomy night may remind people of their misfortunes. When the moon is round and fair but people are separated from their loved ones， such moments can be even more heartbreaking.

Before the comparison， the poet actually complains about the seemingly “ruthless（無情的）” moon and asks her： You should have no spite （怨恨） against man， but why then when people part， are you often full and bright？ However， he soon realizes that no one has an easy ride， just like the moon may not always be bright. The imperfections have been going on since the beginning of time. Thats why he says “There has been nothing perfect since the olden days.”

But should we get bogged down （陷入） by the suffering of things which we cant change？ The poet gives his answer： Change your attitude and stay positive. So， we have this everlasting line， “ ” The poet hopes that people appreciate the fact that no matter where they are， as long as the ones they love and miss are healthy and happy， they can all admire the same moon high in the sky.

To his day people still use this verse to express their good will and wishes for family members and friends who cant be with them， especially during major festivals.

While scientists have been modifying （修改） plant genes for years in biotechnology， they usually focus on a few specific genes in order to get a particular result. Plants have tens of thousands of genes. The genetically modified product （GMP） wont be dramatically different from its natural one. It may have a few features that the natural version doesnt have， but otherwise will remain identical.

Some people worry that genetic modification， which introduces genes from one species into an entirely different species， could create new allergens （過敏原）. In fact， it may turn out that the opposite is true. Depending on the food， scientists might be able to remove or prevent the proteins that act as allergens for some people. This isnt true for every food， but genetic markers scientists use could lead to developing bacteria with a built?in resistance to antibiotics （抗生素）. Scientists use antibiotic gene markers to link genes for the desired features. Also， by exposing modified plants cells to antibiotics， a scientist can confirm whether or not the genetic modification is successful.

But what if that resistance could be passed on the bacteria？ Its possible that bacteria in the soil around a plant with antibiotic resistance could pick up the DNA. The bacteria could， in theory， pass this feature to other types of bacteria harmful to humans. So far， however， scientists have been unable to transfer antibiotic resistance genes from plants to bacteria.

In the United States， farmers dont have to label genetically modified foods or products. Both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration have very strict regulations that products must pass before they can go to the market.

Its possible that the foods that come from biotechnology are not only safe to eat， but theyre actually safer than their natural counterparts. While the controversy around genetically modified food is far from resolved， it appears that you shouldnt worry if the ear of corn youre about to enjoy got its start in a laboratory.
