What do you imagine when vou think of a forest？You probably imagine a large area ofland covered with trees.But as traditional forests are destroyed，tiny fbrest s一some as small asa tennis court—have sprung up in cities around the world.They'relncreasing biOdiverSity land fighting Climate 2 change.

These mini forests are inspired by Akira Miyawaki. He's a plant scientist， from Japanwho pioneered 3 a unique way of growing forests. It's known as the Miyawaki method. It meansplanting a wide varietV of native trees close together and leaving them to grow into aforest.Miyawaki has planted more than l，000 0f these in Japan and other countries.

The Miyawaki method has become popular in Europe.Boomforest is an organlzation lnParis，F(xiàn)rance.It planted two forests using the Japanese scientists technique.The group alsoteaches people how they can grow their own mini forests.

In the Netherlands， an organization has helped communities build 100 forests using theMiyawaki method. It plans to double that number by 2022. The group also educates kids abouttiny forests.

Simon Lewis is excited about tiny forests. He's a professor of global change science atUniversity College London， in England. Lewis explains that its important to grow trees becausethey absorb 7 C02. That's a gas that contributes 8 to climate change.

But not all methods of growing trees， and not all reasons for doing so， help the planet. Asan example， Lewis points to trees grown and cut down to make paper. "When that paper isthrown away， it rots 9，" he said. "Carbon 10 goes back in the atmosphere 11" And the trees， ofcourse， are no longer there to soak up C02.
