Innovating Literary Theory Discourse System: Constructing the Marxist Semiotic Literary Theory in Contemporary China

Abstract: The construction of Marxist semiotic literary theory in contemporary China is an urgent need for the literature in historic change to enter the information society and become involved in the era highly symbolized. Marxist semiotics has a long history and a profound Chinese foundation. We need to systematically clear up the rich resources of Marxist semiotic literary theory, carry out literary criticism and literary studies into literature, culture, society, and the economic base as well from the perspective of Marxist semiotics, and meet the challenges of world literature and cultural thoughts, so as to solve the Chinese problems and take the Chinese road based on the reality, history and future of Chinese literature.

On the Translation Strategies for

Abstract: The first translation of Xi Jinping’swas published in April 2019. As one of chief editors of the translation, the author introduces the guiding principle, lists the top priorities and main challenges, analyzes how to choose the translation strategies, and puts forth three principles on translating government documents to meet the requirements for the new era.

The Construction of a Community with Shared Discourse Based on the Concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity

Abstract: The concept of a community with a shared future for humanity is an important part of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era，and also an important theoretical innovation in the discourse system with Chinese characteristics. Without shared discourse it is impossible to build a community with a shared future for humanity. Core concepts are basic components for a community with shared discourse. It is helpful to find resonance in various cultures through translating core concepts. However, there are many obstacles for China to share its core concepts with other cultures and build a community with shared discourse through translation. From the translator’s perspective, this paper analyzes the elements that deteriorate the effect of translation and discusses the ways for Chinese discourse to reconcile with the world in terms of cultural confidence, translation ecology and international communication.

The Concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity and Its Adoption in Arabian Countries

Abstract: Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the concept of a community with a shared future for humanity proposed by President Xi Jinping has resonated strongly across the Arab world, especially his initiative to build a community with a shared future for China and the Arab nations. In such a world facing tremendous changes and structural adjustments, the construction of a community with a shared future for China and the Arab nations seems more important for global peace and development. This paper briefly discusses the development of the concept of a community with a shared future for China and the Arab nations, based on the translation practice, analyzes the specific challenges for its dissemination and adoption in Arabian counties, and tries to make some policy suggestions for improving the effectiveness of its dissemination.

Two Dissemination Principles for the Concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity in Germany

Abstract: Since the concept of a community with a shared future for humanity was put forward in 2012, its connotation has been elaborated and enriched in practice, multilateral mechanisms, cooperative platforms and policy initiatives are reformed or established to acquire wider international recognition. Based on the field study and literature analysis, this paper discusses how German media and think tanks accept the concept, and proposes two principles for disseminating the concept in Germany, i.e. seeking commonalities while reserving differences in terms of political culture and communicating-priority in terms of translation. And accordingly, specific policy suggestions for improving the effect of dissemination are made.

A Bibliometric Analysis ofa Community with a Shared Future for Humanity and Its Dissemination in Russia

Abstract: A community with a shared future for humanity is a socialist international value concept combined Marxist thought with the actual development of China, based on domestic and international situations. Since this concept was proposed, it has attracted great attention at home and abroad. This paper makes a bibliometric analysis of the research results of this concept on CNKI. With reference to the mainstream Russian media’s attention to this concept, a clear understanding of the research status is formed, and corresponding thoughts on some problems are put forward.

On the Audience Consciousness in the Translation of News Discourse on China

Abstract: This paper focuses on improving the translation effect of news discourse on China. On the basis of expounding the concepts of news, news translation and institutional translation, guided by the target audience awareness of who to say, the paper discusses how to explore a communication route and translation strategy in line with the needs of international audiences for China’s information from the perspectives of precise customization, small and big eyes, and hot spots.

A Bibliometric Analysis of News Translation Studies in the Domestic and International Journals (2000-2018)

Abstract: Based on the corpora of SSCI, A&HCI, SCI, Chinese Core Journal Citation of PKU, this paper makes visualized and bibliometric analyses of news translation articles in the domestic and international journals in 2000-2018, and uses the visualization software of CiteSpace to draw knowledge graphs. The findings show that firstly, the majority of news translation articles in the domestic journals are related to news communication studies, while the majority of those in the international journals are related to linguistic studies. Natural language processing studies are seen in both domestic and international journals. Secondly, the correlations between cited articles in the domestic journals are weak, and there are few citations of highly cited articles in the international journals, which indicates insufficient attention between domestic researches and the lack of expert knowledge about the internationally classic and frontier literature. Thirdly, the international research hotspots include discourse and ideology, cultural diversities, news media and new media, and reflect the trends of continuous explorations of new areas and topics, while domestic studies focus mainly on translation strategies and methods, and are lacking in explorations of new elements in international news translation studies.

Meaning Potential and Individuation: A Study of the Audience’s Decoding of China’s Discourse for International Communication

Abstract: According to systemic functional linguistics, the three hierarchies of language, i.e. realization, instantiation and individuation correspond to language system, use and users. Language is meaning potential, which can be instantiated by the social activities and negotiations of language users, while individuation will increase meaning potential. This paper integrates the theories of meaning potential, individuation and Hall’s encoding-decoding model to conduct an empirical research on the promotion videos of Belt and Road Initiative, in order to find out the gap between the text producer’s intention and the audience’s decoding in terms of the audience’s features, factors and effects of the video. During the process of construal of the video, semiotic resources are recontextualized, and meaning potential is reinstantiated, thus the discourse meaning becomes richer and more uncertain. This study situates the theory of individuation into the audience’s decoding dimension to offer some insights into China’s discursive practice for international communication.

Discursive Construction of Community Identity in Combating the Outbreak of Covid-19

Abstract: A community is a collection of people with a shared perspective, point of view or attitude because of some common condition or parallel experience. Community identity is an individual’s identification with a community and the individual’s belonging to the community. In the process of combating the outbreak of COVID-19, the formation of sense of community and the construction of community identity play a positive role in mobilizing the whole society to join in the combat. Based on the theory of intersubjectivity and the engagement system, this paper focuses on how community identity is constructed in news discourse of combating the outbreak of COVID-19 to investigate the formation of sense of community as well as the discursive strategies for the construction of community identity. In reporting the combat against the COVID-19 outbreak, news discourse, by means of intersubjective resources and engagement strategies, arouses people’s emotional resonance and consolidates their confidence and determination in the united efforts of fighting the epidemic to construct the community identity.

A Conversational Analysis of Officials’ Answers to Journalists’ Questions during the Coronavirus Outbreak

Abstract: This paper, based on the press conferences held by Hubei People’s Government during the outbreak of coronavirus, uses conversation analysis to explore the question/answer section of the press conferences. This research focuses on whether the answerer conforms to or ignores the question’s topical constraint. Conforming to the constraint in the answer is a socially normative act, while ignoring it breaches the relevant social norm and results in negative social consequences. This research is expected to help government officials normatively and appropriately answer journalists’ questions.

The Cognitive Power of Deliberate Metaphors in the Reports of COVID-19 Outbreak

Abstract:Based on the micro-blogs and official wechat accounts of,Xinhua News Agency and CCTV News, this paper makes an quantitative and qualitative analysis of 109 907 words, 76 pictures and 6 videos in total within the framework of framing theory and deliberate metaphor theory. It is found that the reports on fighting against COVID-19 outbreak highlight the frames of war, competition, education, unity, cooperation and incentive in the multimodal texts with the community of shared future for the Chinese nation and mankind as the leading notions. The reports use deliberate metaphors, such as “the prevention and control of epidemic is war, competition and big test” to create a scenario of unity is strength and concerted epidemic prevention embedded in the cultural narratives with Chinese characteristics, namely, one in difficulty and all will support. The use of frames and deliberate metaphors in the reports plays a role in arousing positive emotions of the audience, the values of collectivism and the construction of unified cognitive system of epidemic prevention among the public to fulfill the function of guiding the public opinion.

A Discourse Study ofJoint Treatment of COVID-19: A “2-Level 5-Step” Framework Based Analysis of the Interaction betweenandDiscourses

Abstract: In the field of critical discourse study, discourse is defined as social practice that involves the dialectics of language use and its related social factors. Projecting this perspective onto interaction between discourses, this paper proposes a “2-level 5-step” analytical framework for studying discourses interaction at the levels of language use and social factors respectively, and at the same time in terms of five orderly steps. This analytical framework is then applied in the examination of a CCTV programme “News 1+1”, in which Bai Yansong interviews with Zhang Boli, a(traditional Chinese medicine) expert, on various issues including thetreatment of COVID-19. It is found that Zhang Boli advocates a joint way of treating COVID-19 that involvesand(western medicine). Thisjoint treatment is represented as an integrated discourse ofandthat comes from the interaction betweendiscourse anddiscourse. It is further discussed that the meaning of this newly formed integrated discourse does not remain definite in the joint medical treatment of COVID-19, but changes with thepractitioners’ social cognition of certain issues.
