In the 1880's, Mark Twain established and operated his own publishing firm. He also became interested in various investments, especially an elaborate typesetting machine. He lost almost $200,000 in investments in the machine between 1881 and 1894. Also, his publishing company declared bankruptcy (破產(chǎn)) in April 1894. Thus, in January 1895, Mark Twain found himself publicly shamed by his inability to pay his debts.

Mark Twain eventually recovered from his financial difficulties, through his continued writing and a successful lecture tour in 1895 and 1896. During this much-publicized tour, Twain lectured in such places as India, South Africa and Australia. By the time he returned, he had become an international hero. Twain enjoyed this attention, and his habits of smoking cigars or a pipe and wearing unconventional white suits contributed to his showy image. He also made use of his position as a public figure to criticize the US foreign policy.

Although he was recovering from his financial problems by 1898, Mark Twain had begun to experience tragedy in his personal life. Susy, his oldest daughter, died of meningitis (腦膜炎) in 1896, while her parents and sister Clara were abroad. In 1903, Mark Twain sold the beloved house in Hartford, which had become too closely associated with Susy's death. His wife, Olivia, who had developed a heart condition, died on June 5, 1904. Charlton Heston, the Hollywood actor who has played such roles as Ben Hur and Moses, was once asked if it was destiny that got him where he is today. Heston replied that destiny should be discounted. To him, his success was due to knowing what he wanted, having a bit of luck and working hard.

He summed up his attitudes to life and achievements: “Never give up! Never give up!”

In every important aspect of our life, never giving up is the right approach. Never give up believing in yourself and what you can do for yourself and others. Never give up trying to make your career a success. Never give up trying to learn useful things you have always dreamed about.

Never give up making marriage a success. Never give up on your slow learning or disabled children. Never give up trying to spend quality time with your family and friends.

Never give up when you are trying to change your character for the better but are constantly temped to go back to your old bad ways. Never give up when you are chasing a piece of business.Imagine yourself setting on a vacation journey that would take you probably half a day's ride. This is the holiday that you and your family members have been looking forward to.

On this journey, certain things might happen that might discourage you from sticking to your plans. There could be massive traffic jams. Your bicycle or car might have a punctured tyre. The weather might change and become too hot or too wet.

Imagine another situation. If you and your family are in a boat and an accident happens, would you give up staying afloat, one way or other, until help comes?

You may ask whether it is realistic to never give up your goals. Well, you can give up a piece of your plan but not your goal if you are sure that your goal is important and right.

    5. According to the passage, Charlton Heston ____.

    B. is successful not only in his career but also in life

    C. was once asked some questions when acting the role as Moses

“Last week,” Dr. P said “I was invited to a doctors' meeting at the R. Hospital. In one of the rooms a patient, an old man, got up from his bed and moved slowly towards me. I could see that he hadn't long to live, but he came up to me and placed his right foot close to mine on the floor.”

“Frank!” I cried with surprise. He couldn't answer as I knew, but he tried to smile, all the time keeping his foot close to mine.

My thoughts raced back more than thirty years—to the dark days of 1941, when I was a student in London. The scene was an air-raid shelter (防空洞), in which I and about a hundred other people slept every night. Among them were Mrs. West and her son Frank, who lived nearby. Sharing wartime problems, we got to know each other very well. Frank interested me because he was not normal. He had never been normal, ever since he was born. His mother told me he was 37 then, but he had less of a mind than a baby has. Mrs. West, then about 75, was a strong, able woman, as she had to be of course, because Frank depended on her completely. He needed all the attention of a baby.

One night a policeman came into our shelter and told Mrs. West that her house had been all destroyed. That wasn't quite true, because the West went on living there for quite some time. But they certainly lost nearly everything they owned.

When that kind of thing happened, the rest of us helped the unlucky ones. So before we separated (分別) that morning, I stood beside Frank and measured my right foot against his.

They were about the same size. That night, then, I took a spare pair of shoes to the shelter for Frank. As soon as he saw me, he came running—and placed his right foot against mine. After that, he always greeted me in the same way.

    9. How did Dr. P know that the patient was Frank?

    A. He was told that Frank was in the hospital.

    B. He was invited to study Frank's illness.

    C. Frank greeted him in a special way.

    D. Frank's name was written on the door.

    10. The “unlucky ones” mentioned by the doctor were those ____.

    A. who suffered from illness B. who were killed during the war

    C. who slept in the air-raid shelter D. whose homes were destroyed in air-raids

    11. Dr. P placed his foot against Frank's before he left the shelter to ____.

    A. find out if Frank could put on his shoes B. be friendly towards Frank

    C. see if Frank's feet were normal D. teach Frank to greet people in a special way

    12. Why did Dr. P say that Mrs. West had to be a strong, able woman?

    A. She was over 75.

    B. She needed all the attention of a baby.

    C. She had to give care and thought to her son as to a baby.

    D. She lost nearly everything in the war.

    D

When he wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain turned to Hannibal. The relationship between Hannibal and Twain began in November 1839, when Twain's father decided to leave the village in Florida and move east about 35 miles to the somewhat larger and more prosperous Hannibal, on the banks of the Mississippi River. Twain marked his fourth birthday about a week after the family settled there. He showed little promise of becoming a long-term resident. However, because his health was so poor that his parents probably feared he would not survive childhood.

During the family's first few years in Hannibal, Twain was too young to understand fully the changes going on around him. About the time the family moved into their new home. Twain's health improved a lot. Instead of having to lead a quiet indoor life, he could roam the streets of Hannibal. Climb the surrounding hills, explore the area's caves and splash about in local swimming holes. He reveled in his new-found freedom, spending nearly all his free time playing outdoors with the other boys in town and soon becoming a leader.

Twain's carefree days did not last long, on March 24, 1847, his father died. For the next six years, his brother Henry, and his sister Pamela lived with their mother in the family home. Twain began taking odd jobs after school to bring in extra money. Within a year of his father's death, he quit school and became an apprentice (學徒) printer, and when his brother Orion bought the Hannibal Journal in 1851, Twain went to work for him as a printer and editorial assistant. The stories he wrote for Orion's paper, his first publications, taught him that he much preferred writing to typesetting. Thus, when he decided to leave Hannibal in May 1853, he already had an idea of his future career.

    13. Who brought little Mark Twain to Hannibal?
