I am a foreign teacher in a management position at the School of International Education of Lanzhou Jiaotong University. My name is SARYYEVA JAHAN, and in Chinese, it is from a pronunciation of my name, Jiahan. Before, I never thought I would have such a deep bond with China. When I was in high school, I learned about China, the country with a rich history of over five thousand years from textbooks, especially about porcelain, silk, and tea. I always wondered if I could ever see China with my own eyes and feel it! It was like a dream. I never imagined being a student at one of the wellknown universities in China and getting an excellent opportunity to start my career here in this fascinating country.
By the way, in 2008, I passed entrance exams for excellent performance and finally became a student of Lanzhou Jiaotong University. I am incredibly honored and grateful to study in China. It makes me immensely proud, and I value the opportunity to study in China. In the beginning, I met difficulties adapting to a new place, especially in learning the Chinese language. It is tough enough to master a new language, let alone trying to get used to a different culture, food, and traditions. However, I adapted quickly, because I know if you keep learning and continuously expanding your knowledge, you can overcome any difficulties. So that is why I always insist on learning. At the same time, I paid enough attention to developing my overall creativity, which helped me become an excellent international student.
In 2013, just before graduation, after facing the fierce competition, I was hired by China Petroleum Group Branch in Turkmenistan for the department of Human Resources (HR). I became a member of a friendly, energetic team. I worked hard and quickly adapted to the new working environment. I liked my job very much, and I was doing well there. I had a great time, and I worked with great pleasure for our company. By taking care of its employees, the company created a harmonious atmosphere of unity and friendship. The General Manager of the Company led our team. He is a hardworking, dedicated man, of noble character, with sound professional abilities.Under his leadership, I have gained a lot of expert knowledge and practical skills that one cannot find in a textbook. I came to the company in a very inexperienced and timid way, but the friendly staff made me feel more comfortable. In any case, I am a cheerful, energetic person with a strong sense of responsibility. I believe in team spirit, hard work, I can accept any challenge, and I can adapt to work under pressure. The most important thing about me is that I have a strong ability to learn new things. In less than two months,I mastered the work of Human Resources. I have been with the company for three years, and during this time, I was honored as an“excellent staff” twice.
While working at the Human Resources department, I found out that I had a suitable potential in this area, but I never stopped learning. It was an incredible surprise of my fate; I got the second chance to study in China. In September 2016, I came to China again for my master's degree program at the China University of Petroleum (Beijing). It is a great honor to go to China to study with a government scholarship program in Turkmenistan, but it happened to me twice. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to study in China. I am very thankful to my parents for supporting my studies in China. I will still do my best to live up to my parents' hopes and expectations. I love exploring. I am a hardworking student in general. When I was a student, whether in Lanzhou or Beijing, I still actively participated in events organized by the schools. We have a saying: “Only those who walk down the road understand what that is.” Participating in these events helped me improve my understanding level and helped me to understand Chinese culture fully. I have seen a variety of Chinese food culture. Chinese cuisine is unique, and once you get used to it,you will unconsciously fall in love with it.
To work in China was my dream; I became that lucky woman again. In 2019 I was hired by Lanzhou Jiaotong University. I cherish the opportunity to work heve very much.
Right after the arrival at Lanzhou Jiaotong University, they assigned me to assist in organizing the culture and sports activities of international students. I was mainly responsible for the dance rehearsals of students from Central Asian countries, like Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and other countries. When I got this job,I was secretly happy, isn't that what I used to do as a student? But when you do the job, it's not as easy as you thought. You face lots of problems. For example, at first, the students didn't treat me as a teacher, they did not listen to me, they were very lazy in rehearsals, and being late was a common thing. I was furious at first, because they were too lazy, and I had to think carefully. Everyone has inertia. So I didn't yell at anyone at every rehearsal, but I couldn't start practicing. The students who arrived early did not want to waste their time and started calling the students who had not come. The late students often felt embarrassed by their tardiness. Slowly, the students knew I was their teacher and began to take my tasks seriously.
My colleagues and I completed the “Green Spring Longyuan” art performance with the performance “Rhyme of the Yellow River,” jointly sponsored by the publicity Department of Gansu Provincial Party Committee of CPC,Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and the Education Department of Gansu Province.Gradually, I realized that being a teacher is not easy, and being recognized as a good teacher by the students is even harder. I think that the teacher's job is to convey hope and love. Because of my love for China and Chinese culture, I have chosen to work at Lanzhou Jiaotong University. Although there will always be difficulties at work, I am incredibly grateful to my leaders and colleagues, who always patiently teach me how to solve problems.
I have lived, studied, and worked in China for many years. I have experienced a lot over the years: there were wind and rain, laughter and tears, grief, and suffering, but all of this has had a positive impact. The Chinese culture has quietly entered my life and changed it. When I first arrived, everything around me seemed strange, but now China is my second home, I love China as much as I love my family and my country.
I have celebrated many Spring Festivals in China, but the Spring Festival of 2020 was different and unforgettable. At this time, I heard the notification by the emergency prevention and control division about the pneumonia epidemic. I was so unaware of the severity of the COVID-19, but I also did not expect the outbreak to spread quickly in Lanzhou. On the news, I saw Chinese President Xi Jinping at a meeting to deploy the prevention and control workers for the epidemic. Then doctors and nurses rushed to Wuhan. Thousands of volunteers held the line. My heart was steady, and my mood stable,so I decided to stay in China. Although I cannot cure the disease or contribute much, I decided to remain as to give other students encouragement. When our school started doing necessary work on preventing the epdemic, I did not hesitate to join the college team. I believe that the Chinese Government attached great importance to fighting the virus. There was no doubt that the Government would solve it. So, I was right to choose to stay in China.
China is my second hometown. I came to China in September 2008.I lived in China for 8-9 years. I also more or less understand that the Chinese are not afraid of difficulties, they are one of the most hardworking people, and they are not scared to fight the epidemic. At the beginning of the epidemic outbreak in late January, students asked me whether they would go home or stay in China. I suggested to our students: “The best choice is to stay in China.” There were several reasons to say that: one was that the epidemic was spreading rapidly; another was that going home during the epidemic meant having a chance to be infected on the way; and finally, China had already begun to take preventive measures, so the spread of the outbreak was under control. At that time, 166 international students had not returned home during the winter holiday in our school. The Dean of the School of International Education, Ms. Zhang Guojin, immediately upgraded winter holiday duties to take turns 24/7 to ensure international students' safety during the epidemic period. Our team, including me, along with international students, purchased supplies and other goods.
In early February, some international students and I were interviewed by Xinhua News Agency at the Gansu branch. We recorded a small video in Chinese to cheer up China and Wuhan in our way. The school Leaders of Lanzhou Jiaotong University, Mr. Yang Zijiang, Mr.Li Yinzhen, and other leaders visited the apartments of international students several times so that international students could feel warmth and care. In particular, on February 26, Vice-Governor of Gansu Province, Mr. Zhang Shizhen, came to the school to check on the school's work to prevent and combat the epidemic. At the same time, he came to express his Care to international students. Vice-Governor Mr. Zhang Shizhen kindly asked the other three foreign teachers and me about the situation and issued masks, hand sanitizer, and other epidemic prevention supplies. The Chinese Government leaders attach great importance to our foreign teachers and students, which also makes me particularly touched.
Under the right leadership of the Chinese Government, infection cases throughout China stabilized at the end of March, the morale of international students maintained high. There were zero infections among international students and staff. This time everyone worked together, helped each other with epidemic prevention and control work, and this, in its turn, strengthened the feelings of teachers and students. The life of a person should not separate from helping others.Everything in nature is a universally connected whole. No one can be separated from the things around them and exist independently. But by accepting the help of others, you learn to help others. Although this winter vacation was quite different, it helped me to have a new understanding of life and work.
I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all:
First of all, I am very grateful for this golden opportunity to be highly educated and to develop my career in China and to have a deep understanding of Chinese culture, history, art, and, most importantly, to know how hardworking Chinese people live!
Secondly, thanks to my parents for supporting me in my studies and encouraging me to develop my career in China!
Thirdly, thanks to everyone who was actively involved in the prevention and control of the epidemic during COVID-19!
Lastly, thanks to all the heroes who fought against the epidemiological period of the COVID-19, risking their lives to save the world! [Author: SARYYEVA JAHAN, Turkmenistan.
