This is a villa funded by the Indian embassy in China in 1940. Built with a combination of Chinese and Western style, the main building has two stories with the walls made of grey bricks. The front and left sides of the house are cloisters supported by cylindrical colonnades, which offer open and spacious room for people to sit and rest and give off a little Indian flavor. Lush trees such as Osmanthus are planted around the cloister, giving an elegant look to the building.
During the War of Resistance against the Japanese Aggression, Indian diplomats accredited to Chongqing were not called ambassadors or envoys, but rather commissioners. The diplomatic institutions established were called commissioners' offices and enjoyed the treatment of diplomatic envoys. Former Indian National Congress leader Mr. Nehru once lived here.
In May 2013, this building was listed as the seventh batch of state-level cultural relics protection units in Chongqing. Today, it has been turned into the library of Chongqing Nanshan Botanical Garden. Its collection is mainly composed of garden plants and is open to professionals and related institutions. It is an important place to inquire, exchange professional knowledge and popularize knowledge of plants.
