I wanted to have tea with Nirad in a tea break during a retreat (靜養(yǎng)). I was holding the cup so he could sip (小口喝) tea. I was careful and poured a small quantity in his mouth. I enjoyed concentrating on each moment and listening deeply to do a good job with serving tea.

We were immediately connected and befriended each other during this time. Two other retreat participants joined and then there were four people talking about varieties of topics which ranged from how Nirad progressed in his education to cool ones like how he maintains his weight, etc. These conversations brought smiles and it seemed that we all knew each other from long time ago. In subtle ways, we quietly felt the connection.

When we finished tea, I felt like tying a wristband for Nirad. The wristband had the letters that read “WE” on one side and “ME” on the other if read upside down. I told Nirad that my youngest brother is about his age, and he gave me a sweet, calm smile.

I felt deep content during this teatime. I had actually lived those moments, being sympathetic and friendly. It was an experience of joy. Later, during the retreat, each time Nirad and I happened to greet or talk, we smiled naturally and felt connected.

Its sad that we dont connect deeply, even with our family or friends. We are just too busy running after things, going nowhere. We dont seem to concentrate or care enough for people during our conversations. I had these valuable realizations later.

Whats your opinion about finding good friends? Speaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever! Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have.

The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor and sensitivity (體貼). A friend would have to be strong-minded and highly spirited. I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.

Even the best friends can still have arguments between themselves, though usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, while a bad example of a friend would simply shrug (聳肩) and turn a blind eye.

Not only the bad things affect friendship—good activities do too, such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them, but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.

Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you. I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.

Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend.

I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends, you will have no happiness.

    12. What does the author think of true friendship?

    A. It is easy to get.

    B. It deepens with time.

    C. It needs management.

    D. It affects ones happiness.

    13. What does Paragraph 3 suggest?

    A. A friend should be reliable.

    B. Drugs are bad for teenagers.

    C. Real friends shouldnt be childish.

    D. True friendship doesnt avoid arguments.

    14. Which matters least in friendship according to the author?

    A. Age. B. Confidence.

    C. Sense of humor. D. Communication.

    15. Which saying can match the authors view on friendship?

    A. Old friends and old wines are best.

    B. A friend without faults will never be found.

    C. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody.

    D. A life without a friend is a life without sunshine.

The Spring Festival is the most important holiday for Chinese people.1The arrangements they have to make for family reunions, buying necessities and preparing food keep them busy throughout the holiday. With the countrys economic development and globalization, as it is celebrated today, the Spring Festival has undergone many changes.

2People could not get good food they desired in earlier times, but decades of economic growth has ensured that most people in China can enjoy good meals whenever they want to.

In the past, the Spring Festival celebrations were limited to events, such as songs and dances, dragon or lion dances or fireworks.3But economic development and urbanization (城市化) seem to have weakened the social links among people.

4In the past, people used to visit relatives and friends with gifts and lots of good wishes. Today, many people use their cellphones or the Internet to send their good wishes and even “gifts”. Some may say this is a sign that people have become less caring about their near and dear ones, but we should see this development as a time-and-energy-saving exercise brought by the information age.

Also we can see, some people have started praying to God or the Buddha for a career promotion or more chances instead of for a long life or a fortune of their family. However, the number of such people is decreasing now.5

    A. They require the joint efforts of people.

    B. Yet no Spring Festival is complete without food.

    C. But things like that do not apply to society today.

    D. Many of them travel back home and meet friends.

    E. Many Spring Festival customs have changed, too.

    F. That shows people are becoming more reasonable.

    G. It is the busiest time of the year for Chinese people.

I sometimes wonder if old Finchley has the right personality to be a research scientist. He keeps asking when hell be coming back. After all, it was his own fault. Nobody tries out what has just been invented on themselves any more but Finchley. Well, he must have pumped about a thousand cc into himself before I noticed he was clearly becoming smaller.

It was funny watching him, because his clothes remained the same in size. They simply piled up around him so that he looked like a small boy in his fathers clothes. But he kept getting smaller and smaller. As my colleague Dawson and I watched him, he disappeared! All we could see was Finchleys clothes on the floor. They looked so strange, because the lab coat was on top, shirt and trousers inside and, I suppose, underclothes inside again. It gave me a strange feeling, and I think Dawson was a bit shaken, too.

Dawson was sitting on his chair in front of a microscope hed been using to examine a family of mites (螨). He looked through the microscope kind of absently again, and was nearly scared to lose awareness when he found old Finchley waving back from the other end.

It seemed as if Finchley had taken a free ride on a dust mite and landed on the land of the mite family. Of course, we didnt know till Finchley told us later. But anyhow, as I said, Dawson nearly passed out. He jumped off his chair and pointed at the microscope, too shocked to speak.

    4. Why did Finchley become smaller?

    A. He tried out what has just been invented on himself.

    B. He was covered up by his fathers clothes.

    C. He was changed into a dust mite.

    D. He took something poisonous.

    5. What have Finchley, Dawson and the writer probably invented?

    A. A new way to study the family of mites.

    B. A machine to make people small.

    C. A new powerful microscope.

    D. Some kind of medicine.

    6. Dawson was frightened to see Finchley ___ .

    A. got out of his microscope by accident

    B. gradually disappeared in the lab

    C. suddenly got lost in his clothes

    D. was waving through his scope

    7. What can probably be concluded about Finchley?

    A. He is a devoted scientist.

    B. He is not fit to be a scientist.

    C. He passed out there and then.

    D. He will remain tiny all the time.

The Australian postal service has apologized for delivering a letter half a century after it was sent from an island in the South Pacific.

A couple from Adelaide found the faded postcard, from the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, resting on their doorstep under a gas bill. It bore a postmark of 1966 and was addressed to one “Robert Giorgio”, according to the Adelaide Advertiser. The postcard, which was written by someone named “Chris”, reads: “I am enjoying myself greatly. The weather is very humid. Ill try and drop you a note in England.” Its stamp cost 13 francs, or around nine pence, and is understood to have been sent to the original owner of the house, whose whereabout is unknown.

“It took a while to realize it was an old one,” said Tim Duffy, who bought the house 18 months ago with his wife, Claire, and believes it was built by an Italian man in 1963. “Then I checked the post date and its 1966.” He suspects the card may have been sent by someone who was traveling by boat. “Its fresh enough although it is a bit faded and its got some damage to the top left, which looks like a bit of water damage,” he said. Mr Duffy handed the letter back to Australia Post, who acknowledged that something had “gone wrong” and issued an apology. “It is clear that something went wrong 50 years ago after the postcard was posted in French Polynesia, and we apologize for the inconvenience,” a spokesman said.

It is not the first time that a letter has taken vastly longer than expected to arrive at its destination.

A love letter sent by a British soldier during World WarⅡ was apparently stuck in transit for more than 64 years before it reached RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.

Christine was the girl in one of my classes. I never knew many about her except that she was strange. She disliked talk much. Her hair was black and purple, and she wears black sports shoes and a black sweater, even the summer. She was, in fact, rather attractively, and she never seemed to care how the rest of us thought about her. Like the rest of my classmate, I really wouldnt prefer to getting close to her. It was only when we did our chemistry project together that I began to understand it why Christine dressed the way she did.

A notice at IKEA Shanghai has been shared widely among netizens on Chinese social media. It states that the stores cafeteria now requires customers to order food before sitting down in cafeteria seats. The policy is in response to an elderly blind dating group that occupies (占用) seats for a long time, having only their own food brought from home. Do you support IKEAs new regulation? China Daily readers share their opinions with us.

    Lee Xin (China)

The elderly are harmless. They are lonely and are probably hoping to find some company again. If anything, the store should at least sympathize (同情) with these old people.

    Mbursian (US)

This is more for socializing than for romance. I really dont think a home furnishing store is a good dating place for seniors.

IKEA could also post a reasonable time limit per visit during peak hours. Or instead of tables and chairs, they could use those standing tables and get rid of the chairs altogether. At least IKEAs cafeteria isnt occupied by the dancing grannies and their portable PA systems.

Mr Qiu (Shanghai, China, 65 years old)

We have been to fast food outlets like McDonalds, but there are hardly any peers there. We feel like aliens surrounded by youngsters. If there is another place in Shanghai where elderly people can gather, we are more than ready to pay twice as much and travel further.

    TedM (UK)

Romance can arise in many places, even IKEA. However, this debate arose as a result of many people taking advantage of IKEAs generous drink offers and going there to meet and stay with friends without buying anything. IKEA is a shop; it exists to provide service for a reasonable profit. It is not a public park.

    Michel (New Zealand)

To everyone romanticizing this, please also consider that the store has an image to uphold while protecting the interests of other paying customers. It is ugly to take up seats for such long lasting time when others are waiting

    1. What brought about this new regulation?

    A. Senior blind dates influencing their business.

    B. IKEA has zero tolerance for romantic behavior.

    C. The strong reaction of netizens on social media.

    D. Old people eating their own food to save money.

    2. What will people who are against the new regulation probably agree?

    A. Seniors love affairs can contribute to the stores image.

    B. IKEA is the only place where seniors can find their peers.

    C. The society is being too judgmental and lacks understanding.

    D. IKEA shouldnt reserve a special area for the old people

The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days ago, my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. I was amazed. The sad truth is, great talent is not enough.

I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100, 000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially.

There is an old saying that goes, “Job means just over broke (破產(chǎn))”. And unfortunately, I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers “l(fā)ive within their means”. They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.

When I ask the classes I teach, “How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonalds?” almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask, “So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonalds makes more money than you?” The answer is obvious: McDonalds is excellent at business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.

    4. What do we know about the mechanic?

    A. He is ready to help others.

    B. He has a sharp sense of hearing.

    C. He knows little about car repairing.

    D. He is just one of the talented people.

    5. Why do talented people earn so little according to the text?

    A. They dont use their talents.

    B. They dont work hard enough.

    C. They have no specialized skills.

    D. They lack financial intelligence.

    6. ?McDonalds success lies in its ___ .

    A. skills at making hamburgers

    B. good business systems

    C. talented workers

    D. excellent service

    7. What does writer want to tell us?

    A. How McDonalds makes much money.

    B. Why so many talented people are poor.

    C. What schools should teach about finance.

    D. Where young people can find a satisfactory job.

We begin this topic by discussing the region of the United States known as the Northeast. This region includes 11 states and a small area called the District of Columbia, which is the home of the national government.

The Northeast is a very important part of the United States, for although it covers only about six percent of the nations area, it contains around one-fourth of the countrys population. New York, the most popular city in the United States, and several other large cities lie in this region.

Why are these 11 states so important? In the first place, the Northeast was one of the first sections of the country settled by Europeans. Busy cities developed there when most of America was still sparsely (稀疏地) settled. Many important events in the nations early history took place there, such as the Boston Tea Party in 1773, which took place immediately before the Revolutionary War broke out.

Today the Northeast is a great manufacturing (制造業(yè)) and trading region. Thousands of factories produce a wide variety of goods and provide other regions of the country with items they need. Many large manufacturing firms have their head offices here. Some of the countrys largest banks, investment agencies, and publishing houses are found in the Northeast. Several of its cities are noted for their fine museums. Some of the countrys best known colleges and universities are also found in this region.

Finally the Northeast is where the major part of the countrys inter-national trade takes place. In the heart of this region, in New York city, is the home of the United Nations.

    8. What is the District of Columbia?

    A. Its one of the states of the Northeast.

    B. Its the area where the nations capital lies.

    C. Its the most popular city in the United States.

    D. Its the home of people working in the government.

    9. Paragraph 2 describes the Northeast as ___ .

    A. a large area with a large population

    B. a large area with a small population

    C. a small area with a small population

    D. a small area with a large population

    10. What can we learn about the Northeast?

    A. Many tourists visit it every year.

    B. It is the home of many modern historians.

    C. It is a historical, business and cultural center.

    D. It was never a wasteland like most of the country.

    11. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. The people of the Northeast.

    B. The importance of the Northeast.

    C. The position of the nations capital.

    D. The development of the United States.

Going to sleep may seem pretty boring compared with all the fun things you do while you are awake. But theres a lot going on in your mind and body while you are sleeping.

Sleep, in fact, is as important to your survival as eating and drinking. Sleep improves your mood, makes you a better athlete, and helps you remember and understand what you learned during the day.

During sleep your body temperature drops and your heart rate slows. Down goes the pressure of the blood moving through your veins (血管). A chemical that controls growth (called hormone) moves into your bloodstream. Scientists think that sleep brings back energy and improves your immune (免疫) system. We know what happens while were asleep because scientists study volunteers who sleep in laboratories. The sleepers are connected with machines that measure brain waves, eye movements and muscle activities.

Sleep is like a school day: its divided into different periods or stages. When you are awake, your brain waves fire rapidly. As you begin to relax and drift into (不知不覺(jué)陷入) the first stage of sleep, your brain produces slower-moving waves and you lose awareness of your surroundings. As you slide to deeper sleep, your body repairs itself from the normal wear and tear of daily life. Then, as you begin to drift back up to a lighter sleep, your mind becomes more alert, and your dreams begin. You are in REM sleep.

REM is the name for the rapid eye movement that happens while you are dreaming. During REM sleep, your eyes move back and forth behind your eyelids, as though you were watching a movie. During other stages, you might move in bed, but during REM sleep youre still. Thats probably because if you could move, your body would act out your dreams. As you get close to morning, you spend more time in REM than in deep sleep, so you dream more. Researchers know that during REM sleep the part of the brain that deals with learning and thinking is very active.

“My little angel, you are teaching me how selfless20love is!” I wept.
