Penfolds Magill Estate, original home of Penfolds wines and Australia’s most prized wine, Grange, has been redeveloped to position the facility as an internationally recognised tourist destination for South Australia.
The upgrade complements the historic and celebrated vineyard set within fi ve hectares of premium shiraz vines. It creates a unique, integrated visitor experience providing a new Cellar Door with tasting rooms; a café; shop; personal cellars and restored drives for VIP customers; gallery and exhibition space.
The new Cellar Door has been relocated to the central heart of the site allowing visitors to experience the heritage aspects of the winery including the winery’s earliest cellars. Modern architectural insertions including blackened metal art screens, display Penfolds wine bottles with their distinctive red caps exposed. Similarly, a display of Max Schubert’s personal collection of Grange sits in a ‘ floating’ climatecontrolled precious box.
A series of tasting rooms have been enclosed in the historic stone walls of the oldest cellars. Each room has an individual identity; the Grange Room is reminiscent of a bank vault holding precious wines, while the Bin Room references the old bins where the wine is stored and gives Penfolds wines their distinctive numerical names.
Perforated timber ceilings reference the South Australian coastline and Penfolds vineyard locations throughout the state. The Kitchen uses a combination of lighting through the perforated timber, recreating the feeling of dappled sunlight shining through the vines. Located in a transparent glass cube, it allows visitors to enjoy views of the heritage-listed Grange Cottage and vineyard, when dining indoors or on the grand veranda.
