中國建筑工業(yè)出版社2000年曾經組織出版過一套“國際大師級建筑師”系列叢書。那時,我正在墨爾本做申請建筑師資格注冊,受邀撰寫介紹一位澳大利亞的建筑設計大師。為此我開始對澳洲所有的建筑設計事務所進行全面的了解研究,很快發(fā)現(xiàn)丹頓·廓克·馬修是代表澳洲設計水平的最佳公司。因此,我用了三個月的時間在他們事務所里了解公司的歷史、各個項目的設計和完成情況以及他們的設計理念和設計方法,這可能是我最想要了解的重點。
2013年,我又接到墨爾本大學的朱劍飛教授的邀請一起合作完成同濟大學出版社的介紹事務所的一本雙語專著,書名為“丹頓·廓克·馬修——筑作”。這本書在深圳華僑城藝術&設計畫廊華美術館主辦的DCM名為“小建筑,大建筑和非建筑(small, large and nonarchitecture)的作品展上發(fā)行,成功地為中國建筑師和公眾展示了澳大利亞建筑師和他們的設計作品并得到業(yè)內人士的熱忱歡迎。
自第一次接觸丹頓·廓克·馬修,我開始對他們的作品非常贊賞,因此,在受邀為其在《世界建筑導報》的“事務所專欄”報道中寫序言時,更是倍感榮幸。該專欄展示的都是設計師們傾注才華的作品,像著名的曼徹斯特司法中心、最近在墨爾本莫納什大學設計完成的生物醫(yī)藥教學樓等。這些作品不僅具有技術前瞻性、其經典優(yōu)雅的建筑語言也處處體現(xiàn)出丹頓·廓克·馬修自1972年成立以來致力追求的設計理念。
丹頓·廓克·馬修自1980年從澳大利亞駐北京大使館設計開始其中國的建筑實踐,到現(xiàn)在已經將近40年了。這期間他們也在國際范圍內設計了很多代表澳洲政府的項目,比如澳洲駐東京大使館(1990年)、澳洲駐雅加達大使館(2015年)以及威尼斯雙年的澳大利亞新館。這些建筑不僅功能性強,設計語言歷經時間的考驗,材料和做工非常考究,非時尚文化可以媲美的。設計沒有采用淺薄和老套的手法表現(xiàn)澳大利亞的形象,而是透過更微妙的設計語言來表現(xiàn)澳洲簡潔、明朗而自信的性格。
In 2000, China Construction Press organised an International Master Architect series. At the time, I was undertaking my architect’s registration in Melbourne and was invited to write a piece to represent Australian architecture. I researched Australian architecture practices and it soon became apparent that Denton Corker Marshall was the best practice to represent the country. As a result, I spent three months in their office to understand the history of the practice, their projects and most importantly,their design philosophy and methodology.
In 2013, I was invited together with Professor Jianfei Zhu, from The University of Melbourne, to contribute to the practice’s dual language monograph titled ‘Works - Denton Corker Marshall’,published by Tongji University Press. The publication was launched at an exhibition of the practice’s works in Shenzhen titled ‘Small Buildings, Large Buildings, Non-Architecture’ hosted by OCT Art &Design Gallery. Both the book and the exhibition were very well received by the Chinese architecture profession and the general public.
Since my fi rst encounter with Denton Corker Marshall, I have been a great admirer of the practice’s work and was therefore honoured to be invited to prepare an introductory piece for this special feature in World Architecture Review. The projects presented in this feature showcase some of practice’s key works from the past such as Manchester Civil Justice Centre, together with some of their recently completed projects such as the Biomedical Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University in Melbourne. They demonstrate the ability of this leading global practice to produce timeless, elegant architecture with a distinctive architectural language for which the practice has become well known since its inception in 1972.
Denton Corker Marshall’s history in China dates back to the 1980s when the practice was engaged to design the Australian Embassy in Beijing. The practice has since designed a number of other buildings internationally to represent the nation including, the Australian Embassy Tokyo (1990), the Australian Embassy Jakarta (2015) and the Australian Pavilion in Venice (2015). These buildings are functional and timeless, with a focus on materiality and workmanship; they are not about fashion or pop culture. They avoid a super fi cial and stereotypical image of ‘Australia’, instead relying on a more subtle reading of the Australian character - uncomplicated, unequivocal and confident.
威尼斯雙年展澳大利亞新館和英國巨石陣展覽和訪客中心項目屬于公司的小規(guī)模項目。但這兩個項目卻有很大的國際影響,威尼斯雙年展新館外形勇敢而堅定,訪客中心則不顯眼地坐落在四周的環(huán)境當中,將風采全部讓位給巨石陣經年日久的宏偉壯觀。
辦公類建筑項目的成功是公司重要的業(yè)績。悉尼的菲利普總督大廈和墨爾本的考林斯大街101號都是國際公認的優(yōu)秀建筑作品,至今還是澳大利亞炙手可熱的租賃地產,其租戶都是國際頂級的企業(yè)。新加坡亞洲廣場(2013年)和最近完成的西安匯誠國際大廈更加體現(xiàn)公司設計經典辦公塔樓的實力。
不論是多戶住宅還是私家別墅的設計在公司歷史中占據(jù)舉足輕重的地位。最近完成的位于墨爾本市中心的學生公寓樓,高47層,提供754套公寓單元。在墨爾本最昂貴的城區(qū)設計的一組規(guī)模較小較古典的現(xiàn)代村落,為Toorak公園的居民提供高尚公寓住宅,這些都是公司在城市設計方面專長的實證。
最后選擇的是一些最近完成的教育類項目,其中包括莫納什大學生物醫(yī)學教學樓系館、墨爾本文法學院科學技術中心等等。這些建筑不僅回應了該類建筑的功能要求,運用強烈的建筑語言在這些嚴肅的功能制約下同樣給人帶來的耳目一新的新思路。

The Australian Pavilion in Venice falls under the practice’s small projects portfolio together with Stonehenge Exhibition and Visitor Centre. Both projects are of international signi fi cance and while the Australian Pavilion is bold and brave, the Visitor Centre sits lightly on the landscape, ensuring the signi fi cance of the monument is not overshadowed by the architecture of the building.
Commercial projects have been key to the practice’s long-standing success. Governor Phillip Tower in Sydney and 101 Collins Street in Melbourne have been recognised as enduring works of architecture which still command some of the highest rents in Australia and some of the world’s leading global brands as tenants. Asia Square Singapore (2013) and most recently, Huichen International Tower in Xi’an (2018), have cemented the practice’s ability to produce timeless commercial office towers.
Houses and apartments, whether multi-residential buildings or single, private dwellings have played a signi fi cant role in Denton Corker Marshall’s history. The recently completed student accommodation tower, Scape Swanston, in the heart of Melbourne’s central business district, features 754 units over 47-storeys. On a smaller, more boutique scale, the practice has created an urban village in one of Melbourne’s most prestigious suburbs with the multi-residential Toorak Park development; a strong example of Denton Corker Marshall’s urban design expertise.
And fi nally, a selection of recently completed education projects including the Biomedical Learning and Teaching Building at Monash University and the Science and Technology Hub at Melbourne Grammar School. These buildings convey a strong architectural response and highlight that projects of this nature can also be playful and fun.
