Safety is a huge concern whenever I run with my earphones in. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So Ive found a compromise （妥協(xié)）： I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. Its an imperfect solution.

An updated pair of headphones， called AfterShokz， aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone-conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear， delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum （鼓膜） free to hear everything else.

“Earbuds （耳塞式耳機） are typically designed to block out all sound， which is fine when you are inside. But when youre outside， you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on，” says Rod Annet， managing director of AfterShokz.

Heres where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear free to delight in other sounds.

So do they work？ In a word， yes. During a 45-minute jog， they didnt bounce or shift.

What about the downsides？ If youre a huge fan of high-quality sound， you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises.

Yet those are all minor details. For me， probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between ?49.96 to ?83.29， AfterShokz headphones arent exactly cheap.

With all that considered， would I recommend them？ Yes. AfterShokz headphones are quite useful. While jogging out， they were light， painless， and easy to use. They made me feel safer.

Larry was on another of his underwater expeditions （探險）， but this time， it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.

Larry first began diving when he was his daughters age. Similarly， his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then， he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were either too big or too small. Then， there was the instructor. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened （系牢） on his back， Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes， he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least， he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.

Larrys first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were lots of diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them. Researchers at the University of Bedfordshire have developed a new technique for powering electronic device. The system， developed by Professor Ben Allen at the Centre for Wireless Research， uses radio waves as power.

Believed to be a world first， the team claims it could eventually get rid of the need for traditional batteries. The university has now applied for a patent （專利） application to get the only rights to the technique.

Professor Allen and his team have created a system to use medium wave frequencies to replace batteries in small everyday devices like clocks and remote controls.

The new technique uses the “waste” energy of radio waves and has been developed as part of the universitys research into “power harvesting”. Professor Allen said that as radio waves have energy—like light waves， sound waves or wind waves—in theory， these waves could be used to create power.

“The new area of power harvesting technology promises to reduce our reliance on traditional batteries，” he said. “Its really an exciting way of taking power from sources other than what we would normally think of.”

The team is now waiting for the results of the patent application to get recognition of the technique. Professor Allen said that the teams achievements had all been done in their “spare time”. “Our next stage is to try and raise some real funds so that we can take this work forward and make a working pattern and maybe partner up with the right people and take this to a full product in due course，” he said.

“Power harvesting plays a really important part in our future， because， just in this country， we leave somewhere between 20，000 and 30，000 tons of batteries in landfill （垃圾填埋） sites every single year—that is poisonous chemicals going into the ground.”
