      An Analysis of Core Competencies of English Subject

      Abstract:Core Competencies has caught more and more attention of researchers since it was actually proposed.This article focuses on core competencies of English subject mainly. Background and definition of core competencies; basis and components of core competencies of English subject,these four aspects are mentioned.By analyzing these aspects,people will realize the importance of core competencies of English subject.It will give people specific objectives to learn English and make them know exactly what they should learn and how to learn English as well.

      1 Background of the Core Competencies

      In 2014,Ministry of Education issues several policies about deepening the curriculum reform in an all-round way,which proposed to study and draft a quality standard of students development and their academic quality.Moreover,it pointed out that core competencies is the necessary characteristics for students to adapt lifelong development and meet the needs of society.In addition,the practice of incorporating core competencies into the curriculum is also advancing in other countries according to their own realities.Researches on core competencies in China has been fruitful,which deepens the revolution of education actually.

      2 Definition of Core Competencies

      Core competencies of students development mainly refers to the necessary qualities and core abilities that students should possess to be able to meet the needs of lifelong development and social development.From this definition,it isnt difficult to find that core competencies are kind of qualities and abilities to help students to be more adaptive.

      3 The Contents of Core Competencies of English Subject

      It will help us to understand the core competencies of English to learn the components its connotation.Learning course should not only take knowledge and skills that students need into account,but also take the things that students could do in the future by learning English and the characteristics.To understand core competencies better,students should realize that these four four components are so important.

      3.1 Language Competencies

      Language competencies refers to the competencies that can be used to understand thoughts of others and express ideas in daily life.The core of language competencies is the core of English core competencies.Language competencies is a broad notion that involves not only listening,speaking,reading and writing,but the competencies of understanding language,language consciousness and communicative identity consciousness.

      3.2 Thinking Quality

      Language is close to thinking.Learning and using language must need the help of thinking.Meanwhile,learning and using language can further promote the development of thinking.Most researchers believe that a number of activities in class can help students to promote their ability of thinking.Moreover,thinking quality is different from general sense of thinking and understanding and expressive ability in language.Instead of,it is connected to some thinking quality in English learning.In other words,thinking in different perspectives and solving the problems in different perspectives will give students a further understanding on learning different languages.

      3.3 Cultural Character

      Core competencies of cultural character doesnt mean that students should learn some cultural phenomenon and emotional attitude and its values only.Moreover,it involves cultural tradition and social culture phenomenon reflected in evaluating text.From this aspect,it is not so difficult to find that cultural character exceeds cross-cultural awareness and intercultural communication.That is,cultural character involves many aspects,but it can be taught in class,which needs the efforts of teachers mostly.

      3.4 Learning Capacity

      Everyone must hold an attitude that he should keep learning in his whole life and must possess the competencies to learn by himself.As students of China,it is so significant to develop their ability to study,especially for primary school students and middle school students.To learn English well,a student must master the essentials to learn English and form a good habit to learn English well.Whats important,learning capacity does not only involve learning methods and strategies,but also the cognition and attitudes to learn English.Therefore,as English teachers,they should know exactly what they need to do next and reflect themselves frequently.

      4 Conclusion

      All in all,people will benefit a lot from learning more about core competencies.However,it is still full of chances and challenges for teachers and researchers to use and study it.As for researchers,they should make a great efforts to study more to enrich the contents of core competencies.As teachers,they should use it to guide their teaching practice and add more ideas of their own to core competencies.
