Sinomania [中國熱] From Past to Future

We all know that China has four great inventions: papermaking,printing[印刷術(shù)], gunpowder[火藥]and the compass. They were introduced into the West before the European modernization and had a great influence on Western science and technology. Thus, people in Europe had a kind of sinomania—China Craze—in the 18th century.

Over the past decades, with hard work, we Chinese people have risen as a great global power. From the 2008 Olympics to the Shanghai Expo,“mega[宏大的]events” were held all over China. Amazing projects like the Qinghai-Tibet Highway and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridgewowed[使叫絕]the world. In 2015, Chinese researcher Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Medicine. She discoveredartemisinin[青蒿素].Artemisinin has sharply lowered the number of people who die frommalaria[瘧疾]. All of these achievements have really changed what foreigners think of us.

Last year, I traveled to Canada. When I sat in a Chinese restaurant after a whole day’s sightseeing, I met a Canadian family. They are very interested in Chinese culture and tradition. The daughter, Vanessa,sucked thesauce[醬油]on her fingertips from time to time and told me,“Chinese people I have met so far are so nice, and I’m totally addicted to Szechuan food.”

When I was young, most Chinese people loved to use foreign products, because they believed foreign brands had better quality and performance than local goods. However, nowadays, more and more people around the world would prefer products like Haier washing machines, Huawei mobile phones and, of course, our traditional silk scarves, which are not only “made in China,” but also “invented in China.”

Despite all the recent achievements, we still have a lot of things to learn. We still have a long way to go. Looking into the future,this is just a start. Today, as China gains an increasingly important political and economic status in the international community, it seems like sinomania may sweep the world once again.
