In the workplace of the future your boss could be watching your every move.

Working at home is increasingly popular as a means of escaping from the hard work in from-nine-to-five office life. Why work under the constant surveillance (監(jiān)督) of your boss when you can work comfortably in front of the TV in your home? Armed with all the office basics—the telephone, computer, e-mail and fax, many workers believe they can work as effectively as their colleagues in the office. Work wherever you like: from a busy city to a beautiful village. If you wish, you can even work on a boat.

So what will the office of tomorrow become? It is possible that many could disappear into cyberspace to become a new wave of virtual (虛擬的) offices. To minimize the office in intercity (城市間的) areas, companies will apply a work force made up of a network of home workers linked by an advanced communication and information system. A central processing computer would be controlled by the manager who sends out work schedules and oversees the activity of each employee.

A video screen would be created, as the need for more natural form of communication than e-mail or telephone becomes greater. Managers would have the ability to view several employees at once on their screens. Employees would be encouraged to feed any information that may be useful to fellow workers into the computer to make the company work more effectively. As the companys lifeblood, the computer would contain a record of all conversations and correspondence for future reference and hold secret information such as accounts in password protected areas.

    4. Why is working at home more and more popular?

    A. Its easier.

    B. Its more comfortable.

    C. Its more convenient.

The average American eats a lot of red meat, such as beef and meat. Meat-eaters often note that red meat has a lot of protein (蛋白質(zhì)), which1(help) repair muscles and build bones. But new research shows that if people want to live2long and healthy life, they should get their protein from plants.

Dr Andrew Chan, working at Massachusetts General Hospital, and other researchers3(examine) how proteins from animals and proteins from plants affect human health.

One important4(find) was that people who ate the highest amounts of animal-based protein, such as red meat, had a5(high) risk of dying earlier from heart-related problems.

One reason is6red meat has high levels of cholesterol (膽固醇), which has been linked to heart disease. The researchers also found that the problems most probably happened7people who ate meat and also smoked and drank8(heavy).

While9(get) protein is important, red meat is not the only or best source. Dr Chan said researchers found that people who replaced animal protein with plant protein in10(they) diet reduced their risk of early death.

Life will probably be very different in 2050. First of all, it seems that TV channels will have vanished by 2050. Instead, people will choose a program from a “menu” and a computer will send the program directly to the television. By 2050, music, films, programs, newspapers and books will come to us in the similar way.

In many places, agriculture is developing quickly and people are growing fruit and vegetables for export. This uses a lot of water. Therefore, there could be serious shortages of water. Some scientists predict (預(yù)測) that water could be the cause of wars if we dont act now.

In the future, cars will run on new, clean energy and they will go very fast. Cars will have computers to control the speed and there wont be any accidents. Today, many cars have computers that tell drivers exactly where they are. By 2050, the computer will control the car and drive it to your destination. Also, by 2050, space planes will fly people from Los Angeles to Tokyo in just two hours.

Some big companies now prefer to use robots that do not ask for pay rises or go on strike, and work 24 hours a day. They are also easy to control. And they never argue with people. They can be easily used in a variety of places—factories, schools, offices, hospitals, shops and homes.

Scientists have discovered how to control genes (基因). Scientists have already produced clones (克?。?of animals. By 2050, scientists will be able to produce clones of people and decide how they look and how they behave. Scientists will be able to do these things, but should they?

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.

If you come to visit, youll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When its dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.

Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制臺), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.

I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that Ive put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones Ive put in today.

    How to Set Goals

Whether you have small dreams or high expectations, setting goals allows you to plan how you want to move through life. 1

Find out your life goals. Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life. What do you want to achieve today, in a year, and in your lifetime? The answers to this question can be as general as “I want to be happy” or “I want to help people”. 2

Set specific (具體的) goals. Be specific and realistic about what it is that you want to achieve. Research shows that setting a specific goal makes you more likely to achieve it. 3 For example, “Be healthier” is too big and vague to be a helpful goal. “I want to eat more vegetables, and I want to run a marathon” is better.

Write out your goals. Be detailed, be clear, and include your steps. 4 Keep your list in a place where you can get informed frequently. This will help keep you motivated.

5 You may find yourself set in your ways concerning broad life goals, but take the time to re?evaluate your smaller goals. Are you accomplishing them according to your timeline? Are they still necessary to keep you on track towards your larger life goals? Allow yourself the flexibility (靈活性) to make some small changes to your goals.

    A. Adjust your goals.

    B. Track and measure your progress.

    C. Having a plan will help push you ahead.

    D. Writing them down tends to make them a little more real.

    E. Here are some important ideas that you may find helpful.

    F. Consider what you hope to achieve in 10, 15, or 20 years.

    G. Remember that you may need to break large goals into

    smaller goals.

What will the house of the future look like? Could it have gardens on its walls, or a pool with fish for dinner? Architects believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sure is that the houses will be as green as possible.

    The tree house

Many architects in the world would like to build a “tree house”. Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlight during the day. The energy can be used to heat water, produce electricity, and even create fresh air for the home. The “root” of the house is deep under the ground. It uses the soil to keep the homes temperature.

    The Lizard (蜥蜴) house

Like a lizard, changing color with the weather is the most important design of a lizard house. When its in the bright sun, the cover of the house will turn dark to protect it from strong heat. During dark days, it turns white and takes in as much light and heat as possible to produce energy.

    Meals at home

This design is perhaps as much about the future of food production as architecture. It has gardens on the outside wall of the house. People can plant tomatoes, carrots and green tea on them. So every day in the morning, you just need to walk outside and collect your meals.

    Learning from the past

By definition, most people are average. Average is what everyone else does. If you want to succeed, you must go beyond average. So, how do you choose not to be average? Here are 5 ways to choose not to be average:

    · Have goals. Average doesnt have goals. Average doesnt write them down. 1 Make sure you have clearly defined goals and that you do something daily to move them forward.

    · Go above and beyond. 2 Average does what is expected and stops there. Go beyond peoples expectations and surprise them with results.

    · Push yourself. Average likes easy. Average doesnt push limits. 3 Always be testing your limits to reach new ones.

    · 4 Average likes comfortable. Average likes the well-worn path that is easy to follow. Average is where everyone else goes. Make your own path if you dont want to end up with everyone else.

    · Try new things. Average doesnt like change. Average likes the status quo (現(xiàn)狀). Always be willing to try new things in order to learn and grow.

Life is too short to be average. 5 Choose to be more. Choose to be something better. Choose to be above average.

    A.Make your own path.

B.You are stronger than you think.

C.You have many chances to enjoy yourself.

D.Believe you have reasons to choose to be average.

E.Average does just enough to get by and nothing more.

F.Ask yourself if you are accepting the same as everyone else.

Last week, some of my classmate and I wanted to buy a world map. However, we didnt agree on how to getting it. I wanted to go to a bookstore while they prefer to buy it online. The reason why they turned to Internet was that books were sold for a lower price online. They went directly to the bookstore but chose a suitable map after school. The next day, they also got their maps but unfortunate not the ones they wanted. Now they have to return both the maps and get their money back. So, does it online shopping always have an advantage? I doubt it.

    書面表達(dá)

    在英語課上,你們班將圍繞“Life in the Future”這一主題,展開關(guān)于科技對未來的影響的討論。請寫一篇英語短文,談?wù)勀愕目捶?。?nèi)容包括:

    1.生活方面;

    2.學(xué)習(xí)方面。

    注意:

    1.詞數(shù)100左右;

    2.可以適當(dāng)增加細(xì)節(jié),以使行文連貫。

    Life in the Future

Write Your Letter to Your Future Self

When you look back on yourself in the past—10, 20 or more years ago—its surprising to see how much you have changed over time. Your experiences, your friends, your family and your work have all shaped who you are right now. But where will you be in another few years? How will you have changed? Reflective writing in your journal is an excellent way to think about what you want in the future.

Just imagine writing a letter to your future self 5 years from now, then opening it at that exact moment 5 years down the road to see how much of it resonated with you. It is a useful supplementary tool to be used in goal achievement, because when you write the letter to your future self, it helps crystallize exactly how you anticipate yourself to become at that specific moment down the road.

When you open the letter in the future, you as your future self gets to compare how you used to be in the past and compare with how you are currently. This makes you see in totality how much things have changed since then—and this can be a really intriguing experience. Its interesting to just see how much you have changed since you wrote the letter.

    What to write about?

Look at todays date. Now imagine you writing to yourself, exactly N years from now. What do you want to say to your future self?

How do you want your future self to be like 1 year in the future?

What are the different dreams and goals you would want to be realized by then?

What is your desired status of the areas of your life wheel at that time?

Once youre done, sign off your name with todays date. Put the papers in an envelope. Seal it. Keep your letter in a safe place.

Set in your calendar to open your letter 1 year from now. Put this envelope in a safe place where no one can access to it.

Live your life like youve never lived it before in the next 1 year. Open the letter 1 year later and relish in nostalgia, love and joy as you read the letter from yourself 1 year ago.
