Five Typical Comtemporary Buildings of Jing-chu Style
Translated:Liu Jie
It has always been the unending aim of Hubei architects to recreate the Jing-chu style in modern buildings. Employing traditional skills and extracting historical symbols to enhance the cultural atmosphere of the space and form of the building have been a worthwhile method for modern architecture to explore.
After the systematic combing of the Jingchu cultural connotations and features, and the overall review of the historical buildings in Hubei, it’s not hard to find that the connotations, cultural elements, and cultural traits of Jing-chu culture have had profound effects on the design, construction, and decoration of Jing-chu style architecture, revealing the great impacts of Jingchu culture on Jing-chu style architecture, which is what is called architecture of the Jing-chu style.
On that account, by means of exploring the meaning of Chu culture and seeking the promotion and the application value of Jing-chu culture in modern architectural design, we have sought to subtly integrate modern architectural technology, functional space, natural environment, life style, customs, and historical context together to obtain unique artistic style and cultural taste, thus, infusing cultural genes and cultural memories into the modern buildings of Hubei.
The inspiration for the design of this building originated from the symbol of Chu culture—the Chimes. With the twin towers, the main building on the whole has the shape of chimes; the holelike square windows look like the protuberances on the chimes. The two wings of the heads of the twin towers assume the form of spreading wings, obtaining the meaning from the image of the phoenix in Chu culture, and filling them with force and a sense of romance. While the glass curtain walls of the twin towers look like two flying dragons soaring in the sky, bringing out a strong sense of motion.

The watch tower with twin Que(i.e. lookout stations) on the gate has got the shape from that of a drum in the Chu State, which had a pedestal with the shape of a tiger and a framework of twin phoenixes holding a drum in between, from which developed the idea of a ridge decorated with twin phoenixes nestling on the roof of the watch tower, showing Chu people’s custom of admiring phoenixes.
The design of the Theatre has subtly extracted the essence of guqin, a seven-stringed plucked instrument similar to the zither, and abstracted it with the extraction of its basic line types and elements. Then they are arranged in accordance with rationalism to recreate a unique architectural language. The obtrusive structure of the Theater looks like the reed of a piano, with a great sculptural and masculine sense.
The Museum is pseudo-classic architecture with high stylobate, wide reaves, and a steep sloping roof, which assumes a tripartite layout, highlighting the distinctive features of wide reaves of multilayers and steep sloping roof characteristic of Chu architecture.
It is by applying the architectural forms of midline symmetry, high stylobate, wide reaves, and steep sloping roof of Chu buildings that the new Wuchang Railway Station inherits the essence of the history and culture of Chu area. ◆
