一個英國人和他的重慶摩托夢

編者按:今年11月8日是中國第15個記者節(jié)?!吨貞c與世界》本期“老外看重慶”特意專訪兩位身份特別的“記者”:一個來自韓國,一個來自英國。他們的共性都是生活在重慶、都在自發(fā)地用手中的媒介為重慶宣傳服務。不同的是:英國人David是將重慶摩托行業(yè)通過媒體“走出去”;韓國人姜敏雄則是將刊物“引進來”,為在渝的韓國人打開了解中國、了解重慶的窗口。
David是一個在重慶生活了十二年的英國人,他是中國國際摩托車博覽會、中國摩托車配件博覽會的官方合伙人和組織者,還成為了中國摩托車行業(yè)主要咨詢?nèi)?;業(yè)余撰稿中國摩托車行業(yè)的最新信息,發(fā)表到全世界40多個國家的雜志和網(wǎng)站上;創(chuàng)辦了屬于自己的c2w (china2wheels)媒體雜志和網(wǎng)站,他是為重慶摩托“走出去”尋找機遇的外國友人。日前,David接受了本刊記者的采訪,聊起了他的重慶摩托夢。
David McMullan是少有的在重慶生活工作待了10年以上的外國友人之一。約定見面地點時,他選擇了一家在市中心新開的英式餐吧,一個土生土長的重慶人都還不知道的地方。
一到餐廳坐下,David便很開心地告訴我,在重慶生活這么久,終于第一次在這里吃到了fish&chips(炸魚和薯條,一種傳統(tǒng)的英式快餐)。雖然不明白炸土豆能有多美味,但作為每次旅游回到重慶就想吃火鍋的本地人,我完全能理解這種在異國他鄉(xiāng)吃到地道家鄉(xiāng)美食的欣喜。
因為太太是重慶人,2003年David搬到重慶生活。之前,他是在英國從事自由撰稿工作。剛來重慶時,因為語言和文化不通,對于事業(yè)發(fā)展,David還有點迷茫。慢慢地,他發(fā)現(xiàn)重慶是一個工業(yè)成績顯著的城市,尤其是其在摩托車領域的發(fā)展,一直領航著中國摩托車行業(yè)。David發(fā)現(xiàn)了這個職業(yè)機會,“其實有許多重慶企業(yè)想要到海外發(fā)展,同時一些歐美同行也會考慮拓展中國市場,我為什么不做這個橋梁,為他們搭建一個溝通交流的平臺呢?”David很快便付諸行動,通過自己在英國的資源,與重慶及國外的企業(yè)接洽。他將重慶摩托車及零件配置出口到英國、以色列、印度等,同時也為重慶企業(yè)引進國外新的摩托車技術(shù),如電子控制系統(tǒng)、ABS剎車系統(tǒng)、加速器等技術(shù)提升。其間,他還當起了投資顧問,幫助重慶企業(yè)到歐洲、南美洲等地發(fā)展。
現(xiàn)在,David是中國國際摩托車博覽會、中國摩托車配件博覽會的官方合伙人和組織者,還成為了中國摩托車行業(yè)主要咨詢?nèi)耍凰l(fā)揮自己的寫作特長,將中國摩托車行業(yè)的最新信息撰稿發(fā)表到全世界40多個國家的雜志和網(wǎng)站上,讓更多海外的企業(yè)和同行們了解重慶摩托車行業(yè)的發(fā)展現(xiàn)狀,為重慶摩托“走出去”尋找機遇。不僅如此,David還創(chuàng)辦了屬于自己的c2w(china2wheels)媒體雜志和網(wǎng)站,提供有關摩托車行業(yè)的信息。
David自己也沒有想到,可以在這個行業(yè)做得如此得心應手。而且這樣一干就是10年。但他也不得不表示,如今重慶摩托車產(chǎn)業(yè)整體呈下降趨勢,印度正在成為業(yè)內(nèi)新的有力競爭者。印度制造的摩托車及零件有一半在本國銷售,運到國外的產(chǎn)品也會貼上自己的品牌logo;反觀重慶制造的摩托車,運到國外后會則被重新貼標,由此造成國外用戶對中國的摩托車品牌不夠了解?!爸貞c摩托車行業(yè)在海外的發(fā)展,除了技術(shù)上需要提高外,還應該注重品牌宣傳,打響屬于自己的摩托車品牌”,在與重慶公司的合作咨詢中,David提供了許多發(fā)展建議,“中國的摩托車產(chǎn)業(yè)近年來正在迅速發(fā)展,技術(shù)上也許還不是最高的,但并不能代表以后不能?!彼麑ξ磥碇袊ν熊囆袠I(yè)充滿信心。
在重慶生活了12年,David親身感受到了巨大的城市變遷。這就像在看一部充滿曲折的電影,永遠不知道下一個鏡頭會帶給你怎樣的驚喜。如今的重慶越來越有國際范兒,“想想我剛來的時候,還找不到很正宗的西餐廳,或者進口超市,那個時候好像就只有10幾個外國人在重慶,而現(xiàn)在,高樓大廈林立,各種西餐廳、酒吧,越來越多的外國人來到重慶生活、工作,有時候一覺醒來,站在陽臺上一看,似乎這個城市又變了一個樣?!盌avid笑著說到。
如今,在很多外國人眼中,中國是一個非常安全的國家,人民安居樂業(yè)。對這一點,David表示贊同。他認為,重慶就是一座讓人很有安全感的城市,夜晚走在街上也不會有任何擔心。這里的人友好熱情,樂于助人。閑暇時,他會帶著女兒出去走走,尤其是傍晚,還會加入到中國大媽的廣場舞隊伍中去。
David偶爾也會和太太、女兒一起去周邊區(qū)縣游覽,奉節(jié)、大足、武隆······許多地方都留下了他們的足跡。他說,自己的家鄉(xiāng)倫敦也是一座古老而又現(xiàn)代化的城市,不僅是歷史文化名城和國際金融中心,更以“霧都”著稱于世。這點似乎和重慶很相似。作為一座歷史名城,重慶有洪崖洞、十八梯這樣具有巴渝特色的傳統(tǒng)建筑,同時也正接受著國際氛圍的渲染和熏陶,古今結(jié)合,非常有特色。
David表示,作為一個在重慶生活了12年的“重慶女婿”,重慶就是他的第二個家鄉(xiāng)。對于家鄉(xiāng),你會有很多細枝末節(jié)的感受,卻又不像一般外來游客一樣有很簡單初略的印象。在他看來,自己對重慶的感情是無法用幾句言語可以表達的,也不是幾個詞語可以概括的。游覽,奉節(jié)、大足、武隆······許多地方都留下了他們的足跡。他說,自己的家鄉(xiāng)倫敦也是一座古老而
請他對這座城市提提建議,David笑了。在他看來,現(xiàn)在重慶經(jīng)濟發(fā)展迅速,許多家庭都擁有私家車,有的甚至是2輛,很多人開車到市中心上班、購物等,交通越來越擁擠,這在無形之中給城市交通增加了許多負擔。他表示,在英國,政府通常會對到城里的車輛進行收費,大約一天20英磅,“我認為重慶政府可以限制對私家車輛的購買,同時借鑒其他國家城市的經(jīng)驗,以緩解擁堵狀態(tài)。”但他也承認,經(jīng)濟手段制約固然會起到一定的限制作用,但更多還是需要人們意識的提高:例如認識到步行或公交車出行,對個人健康、城市發(fā)展及環(huán)境等方面都有著積極的作用。
除此以外,David還希望重慶能修建更多的公園和博物館,讓人們周末有更多的地方休閑放松,“在倫敦光是博物館就有300多家,重慶可以多增加一些博物館,人們可以得到文化熏陶,提升素養(yǎng)。”他告訴記者。
談及未來的人生計劃,David說:“我想我會一直在重慶生活下去,不僅是因為我的家人在這,還有我的事業(yè),以及加強重慶本土摩托企業(yè)與國外企業(yè)合作的目標”。目前,David在重慶經(jīng)營著自己的事業(yè):管理網(wǎng)站,一如既往地為各個雜志撰稿,宣傳重慶及重慶工業(yè)。他認為,2016年對于中國工業(yè)來說,將是非常重要的一年。隨著電動汽車、電動摩托車更多地進入市場,以及新的ABS相關法規(guī)的頒布,中國的摩托車制造產(chǎn)業(yè)一定會迎來新的挑戰(zhàn),這也會給他的工作帶來新的機遇。他深信,重慶的摩托車行業(yè)一定能在新的一年得到質(zhì)與量的提高。
在重慶這座充滿無數(shù)潛力與可能的城市,在自己的第二故鄉(xiāng),David期待有更激勵人心的發(fā)展。。
This November 8th is the 15th annual China Journalist Day. The World and Chongqing Magazine has organized two interviews with special reporters for this issue; one is from Korea and the other is from the United Kingdom. They both live in Chongqing and have been promoting this city in their own ways. The difference is: David McMullan is promoting Chongqing's motorcycle industry's “going out”, while Kang Min-Woong is introducing a magazine for Koreans to help them better understand Chongqing, China.
David McMullan is a British guy who has ived in Chongqing for 12 years. He is the principal motorcycle industry consultant in China and co-organizer of the China International Motorcycle Trade Exhibition and the China Motorcycle Parts Fair. He also contributes Chinese motorcycle news articles to over 40 magazines and websites globally, has establish his own magazine, “C2W” (China2Wheels) and is acting as a consultant to many global motorcycle companies that wish to enter the Chinese market or cooperate with a Chinese company. Recently,he accepted an invitation to be interviewed with our reporter, talking about his dream of Chongqing motorcycles.
David chose a new English style bar/ estaurant in downtown Chongqing for our nterview, which this native reporter had never heard of before. David happily told me he fi nally had fi sh and chips (a traditional English-style fast ood) at this place for the fi rst time since coming here.
David moved to Chongqing in 2003 because of his wife, who is from Chongqing. Before that, he was a freelance writer in the UK. When he fi rst came here, it was a bit confusing or him, because of the language and cultural differences. Later, he learned Chongqing is a city with remarkable achievements in industry,especially in the fi eld of motorcycle development and has become an industry leader in China. David saw this as a great career opportunity. “In fact, there are so many Chongqing enterprises that want to develop overseas business, while other European and USA counterparts are considering expanding into the China market. Why can't I be this bridge for them and build a communication platform?” Soon David put hisideas into action, talking to both Chongqing and foreign enterprises through his resources in the UK, helping Chongqing motorcycle companies export parts to the United Kingdom, Israel and India, as well as introducing new motorcycle technology, such as electrical control systems,ABS brakes and accelerator technology to Chongqing. Meanwhile, he has also worked as an investment consultant, helping Chongqing enterprises expand their business into Europe and South America.
David had no idea his new career would become so successful over the past 10 years. But, he also had to say that today the Chongqing motorcycle industry has declined a great deal lately, due to India becoming a new competitor in the industry. Chongqing made motorcycles are relabeled when being shipped abroad, resulting in buyers having a lack of awareness of Chinese brands. “The Chongqing motorcycle companies involved in overseas business need to focus on promoting their own brand names and improve their technology. Everyone is in agreement that the quality of Chinese motorcycles has improved in the past several years, but they also agree these motorcycles still don't represent the highest levels of technology. This is not to say this cannot be done!” David said confi dently.
12 Years of Life in Chongqing:“l(fā)t looks like London.”
After living in Chongqing for 12 years,David has witnessed massive urban changes in this city. Now, Chongqing is becoming more and more international. “When I first came here there were no western restaurants, or imported goods supermarkets and only about 10 foreigners lived in Chongqing. Now, high rise buildings are everywhere, with a variety of western restaurants and bars. More foreigners have come to Chongqing. Sometimes, I wake up, stand on my balcony feeling this city has changed again.” David said with a smile.
According to many foreigners, China is a very safe country, with which David also agrees. He believes Chongqing is a city that makes people feel safe. People here are friendly and helpful. He often takes his daughter out for a walk, especially in the evening to enjoy the dancing in the open square.
David occasionally travels to the country with his wife and daughter, to places such as Fengjie, Dazu and Wulong. His hometown,London is also a historical and cultural city and an international fi nancial center. It is also known throughout the world as the “fog city”, similar to Chongqing. As a historical city, Chongqing has old fashioned traditional architecture, such as Hongyadong and Shibati, as well as an international atmosphere and influence, which is a perfect combination and very unique. As a “son-in-law of Chongqing”, this is his second home, unlike most visitors, who have a more simplifi ed impression of the city. In his view, his feelings for Chongqing cannot be adequately expressed, or summarized in a few words.
City Proposals:Fewer Private Cars, More Museums
When it comes to proposals for improving the city, David believes, now as Chongqing's economy has developed so rapidly, many families own a car, some with more than one,more people are driving to work and to shop downtown, making traffic more and more congested, which is causing many problems. He said that, in the UK the government would normally charge about 20 pounds per day to vehicles that drove into the city. “I think the government here can restrict the purchase of private vehicles in Chongqing, using the information of urban experiences from othercountries to relieve the congestion.” He also acknowledged hat economic restrictions can only play a limited role, and people's awareness also needs to be improved. For example,walking, or taking a bus has a positive effect on people's health,urban development and the environment.
In addition, David hopes Chongqing would build more parks and museums, so people could have more places to elax on weekends.
When talking about his future life plans, David said he plans to continue living in Chongqing. He is now running his own business in Chongqing: managing websites and, as always, writing for various magazines to promote Chongqing industry. He believes 2016 is marked to be a pivotal year for the Chinese motorcycle industry, with manufacturing struggling to “gear up” to comply with the law changes regarding EFI in many countries and anticipating the predicted arrival of new ABS legislation, which will bring new opportunities to his career. He is convinced the motorcycle industry is now looking forward to reaching its greatest challenge in which it can boast to have achieved quality and reliability levels to rival any country in the world. David is looking forward to more exciting developments in his second home - Chongqing, the city fi lled with potential and possibility.
