    The Limitations and Application Methods of Suggestopedia

    【Abstract】For a long time,college English teaching was mainly teacher-centered.Teachers played a dominant role in the classroom whereas students played a passive role.The“Suggestopedia” theory is such an effective way.However,there exist some limitations when apply the Suggestopedia theory.Teachers must pay attention to these limitations when apply the Suggestopedia theory.This thesis not only presents the limitations but also give some advises to the proper application of Suggestopedia Theory in teaching.

    1.Introduction

    Suggestopedia is a teaching method developed by the Bulgarian psychotherapist Georgi Lozanov in the 1960s.Lozanov is a psychologist,Lozanov applied Suggestopedia into foreign language teaching ,aiming to make the learning process a pleasure.Thus,Suggestopedia,due to its superior consciousness and original ideas,has become a new pedagogy.

    2.The Limitations

    Suggestopedia proves to have improved English capability in some aspects,while it shouldnt be denied that there exist some limitations.

    2.1 For Teachers.For teachers who accustomed to the traditional English teaching methods,most of them are not familiar with the effective teaching method,let those teachers put Suggestopedia method into practice is somewhat impossible.When applying Suggestopedia method,the condition is highly demanded.There must exist satisfying environment,well-qualified device.Otherwise,teachers should master adequate knowledge and relevant skills and methods.As Suggestopedia method require the students involvement,students is the center of the class.When applying Suggestopedia method,teachers may easily make a mistake.Paying more attention to the process and form,which can lead to the neglect of the basic points of language.Thus,students will not accomplishment the requirement to master the bacic knowledge.Such as,the grammar,the vocabulary,and reading.

    2.2 For Students.Most of the students are accustomed to the original teaching method.Teachers only teach the basic knowledge and students listen carefully with a notebook in hand.Students have been apt to accept the old teaching method and kept a habit of learning through traditional teaching method.When students want to take an active part in the class may feel nervous and can not show themselves in the class.Students may feel ill at ease and not accustom to Suggestopedia method well.Students even may not willing to take part in the class.Otherwise,It strongly depends on the trust that students develop towards the method by simply believing that it works.if students dont believe teachers,Suggestopedia method will not imply actively.As there are more than fifty studens or even more in one class.For a large size class,some of the students can not participate in the class,this situation may lead to the polarization of learning.

    3.The Application Methods

    The teaching condition need to be improved,the class should quipped with complete sets of teaching materials and perfect equipment.Education administration should encourage teachers to take Suggestopedia teaching method in a resolutional way.Teachers should change dominant role and create the student-oriented class.Changing the stuffed-duck teaching mode in class and promoting students learning.Teachers should master adequate learning material and arrange the material in proper way.The teacher should be a highly-regarded professional,reliable and credible.The teacher should love students of course,not sentimentally.Teachers should also pay more attention to foster students habit of learning by themselves.Moreover,teach students with personal participation through games,songs,classical arts,and different materials should be applied to students,which better matches their characteristics.Lessons for students are more interesting,preventing the students from the negative pedagogical suggestions of society ,and giving positive encourage to students.

    Music is the soul of Suggestopedia.Choosing the proper music could enhance learning efficiency.The design of the class is the essential part of applying suggestopedia method.Teachers should adopt all kinds of suggestopedia teaching methods,let students form group discussion to solve the numerous student members in the class,and make sure the validity of the teaching class.

    4.Conclusions

    The “Suggestopedia” theory is an effective teaching method.Eventhough,there exists some limitations for teachers and students when applying this teaching method,through analysis these limitations the author gives some feasible suggestions for better application Suggestopedia teaching method.If wants to better imply Suggestopedia teaching method,teachers still need to search more in teaching experience,enrich Suggestopedia method and find more effective ways to promote education method improvement.
