LONDON— Dozens of British music stars have come together to record a new version of the song “Do They Know Its Christmas？”to raise money for the fight against Ebola（埃博拉病毒）.

Thirty years ago， British musician Bob Geldof brought together dozens of stars under the name Band Aid. Their song “Do They Know Its Christmas？” raised $11 million for victims of the Ethiopian famine（饑荒）.

Now hes done it again. A new generation of musicians plus a few old faces have recorded a reworked version of the same song to raise money for the fight against Ebola. Geldof says the international community has not given enough to fight Ebola.“They need 20 times that，” he said.

The song has topped the charts in Britain. But the Band Aid 30 release has not been universally welcomed in Africa.

Several African stars including Salif Keita and Mory Kante have come together under the group name“3D Family” to record an alternative fundraising song titled “Africa stop Ebola”. All proceeds go to the charity Doctors Without Borders.

Sung in French and local languages， it urges people to go to a doctor if they are ill — and warns them to avoid touching dead bodies.

Among the artists on the track is Senegalese rapper Didier Awadi — who also criticized Band Aid 30.

“Anytime we have a problem in Africa… Bob Geldof， Im the angel coming to help the Africans，” said Awadi.

Medical experts say the disease has spread so quickly in West Africa because people lack information about how to fight the disease. “Music might change that.” says Guinean singer Mory Kante， who also appears on “Africa Stop Ebola”.

“I think that art and culture is the shortest route to communicate with these villagers so that they understand the importance of being able to avoid it .” said Kante.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently surprised Chinese students when he spoke to them in Chinese for about 30 minutes at Tsinghua University .

Clayton Dube ， head of the U.S.China Institute at the University of Southern California praises Zuckerbergs effort and thinks more American CEOs should learn foreign languages.

Zuckerbergs talk raises a larger question： is Chinese the language of the future？ Could it replace English as the worlds international language？ Mandarin Chinese already has the most native speakers of any language. And， China may soon pass the United States as the worlds largest economy.

The study of the Chinese language is increasing in the United States and around the world. In 2009， about 60，000 American college students were studying Chinese. That is three times as many as in 1990.

A small but growing number of American parents are even sending their children to bilingual Chinese schools. Leianne Clements has no cultural connection to China， but her children are learning Chinese at the Yu Ying Public Charter School in Washington D.C. Every other day， classes at this school are 100 percent in Chinese. Ms. Clements thinks knowing Chinese could give her children a competitive advantage.

“So far， English has kind of been the universal language， but more and more， with Chinese businesses and just the amount of industry that they have there it seems like it would make you a valuable employee if you also spoke Chinese.”

Clayton Dube thinks Chinese will grow in importance， especially for people who want to work and do business in China. But he does not think Chinese will overtake English any time soon.

“As China rises you can expect that more people will adopt the language. But is Chinese going to replace English？ I dont think so — certainly not in my lifetime， probably not in the next two， three， four generations.”

Many college students have given up taking class notes by hand. Instead， they type on laptop or tablet computers. But scientists from Princeton University and the University of California say that that method is less effective.

Writing notes by hand is much better for longterm memory of ideas， or conceptual（概念性的） information. That is the finding of a 2014 study published in the journal Psychological Science.

Students who type notes on a keyboard often transcribe， or write down what the professor says wordforword. They may write without really thinking about what they are writing. These electronic notes contained more words. But scientists say it leads to “mindless transcription.” Transcription means to record something exactly as you hear it.

However， students taking notes by writing them， need to first process the information they hear. Then they record just the main points， or summarize. They use fewer words. This is because people usually write slower than they type. This process of summarizing information leads to a deeper understanding， say the researchers.

In the study， students listened to a teacher and then took a test. Some took notes by typing on a computer. The others took notes by writing them down.

Both groups performed about the same in remembering facts. But students who typed their notes did much worse on conceptual questions. These questions required them to understand an idea.

Also， researchers found that those who wrote their notes remembered conceptual information better a week later. Researchers believe that the students who wrote notes had a deeper understanding of ideas and concepts.

This research was contained in a classroom. But the findings may be valuable for anyone wanting to remember more of what they read， hear or see.
