    - Passage 1 -

Like most English children, I learned foreign languages at school. When I made my first visit to the United States, I was sure I could have a nice and easy holiday without any language problem. But how wrong I was!

At the American airport, I was looking for a public telephone to tell my friend Danny that I had arrived. An American asked if he could help me. “Yes,” I said, “I want to give my friend a ring.”

“Well, thats nice. Are you getting married?” he asked. “No,” I replied, “I just want to tell him I have arrived.” “Oh,” he said, “there is a phone downstairs on the first floor.” “But were on the first floor now,” I said.

“Well, I dont know what you are talking about. Maybe you arent feeling too well after your journey,” he said. “Just go and wash up, and you will feel a lot better.” And he went off, leaving me wondering where on earth I was: At home we wash up after a meal to get the cups and plates clean. How can I wash up at an airport?

At last we did meet. Danny explained the misunderstanding: Americans say “to give someone a call”, but we English say “to give somebody a ring”. When we say “to wash your hands”, they say “to wash up”. And Englishmen start numbering from the ground floor so the first floor is the second for Americans.

    - Passage 2 -

When I was young, I was very naughty. And I often made some trouble. Some people didnt like me, but I didnt know the reason until my grandfather took me to the fishpond (養(yǎng)魚塘) on the farm. He asked me to throw a stone into the water. I did what I was asked. Then my grandfather told me to watch the waves made by the stone. Moments later, he asked me to think of myself as that stone.

“You may make a lot of splashes (浪花) in your life, but remember the waves that come from those splashes will affect the peace of all your friends beside you,” he said. “Remember that you are responsible for what you throw into your circle. and that your waves will touch many other circles. Always try to live in a way that allows the good that come from your circle to send the peace of your goodness to other circles. Remember the waves that come from anger and jealousy (嫉妒) will send those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for all the waves.” That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner peace or anger that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if we have hatred and anger.

We show the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we tell them or not. Whatever is inside of us is flowing out into the world and touching all the other circles of life. We must remember that we arent single, so we must be responsible for everyone beside us.

And it is a wonderful idea to show your letter or diary to a teacher or another responsible adult. Then the bullies will feel very afraid if their names appear in a letter!

That way, Im sure Ill get half the questions right.”

The next day, Fred came happily into the exam room. As he sat tossing a coin for half an hour he marked down his answers. Then he left, half an hour before the rest of us.

The next day, he saw the chemistry professor in the corridor. “Oh, good,” he said, “Have you got the result of the test?” The professor looked at him and smiled, “Ah, its you, Baines. - Passage 1 -

London used to be“foggy” for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The“fog” was in fact smog, a mixture of smoke and fog. In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal (煤) that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, Londons smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.

Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in peoples houses. If these factories were closed, it would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel (燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.

However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be.

( )1. What was the main reason for air pollution in London?

    A. There was too much smoke in the sky.

    B. There were too many factories in the city.

    C. People burnt too much coal in the houses.

    D. The city was too big for the cleaners to clean.

( )2. How did the air in London become much cleaner?

    A. There was not so much fog in the winter later.

    B. A law was made to keep people from burning coal in their houses.

    C. Many factories in the city were closed.

    D. People paid more attention to cleaning their city.

( )3. What does the underlined word “pea-soupers” refer to?

    A. Smog. B. Smoke. C. Gas. D. Coal.

( )4. The problem of air pollution is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve because of

    _______ reasons.

    A. one B. two C. three D. four

( )5. Which sentence is NOT true?

    A. Air pollution is serious in Beijing and Chongqing.

What is the book made of? When we read books or newspapers, we hardly stop to think about the paper which is used to make them. Without this invention, our lives would be very different.

Paper is one of the most important inventions of all time. The word “paper” comes from the word “papyrus”—a grasslike plant. The Egyptians first used papyrus around the year 3000 B.C. to make a kind of paper. In A.D. 105, a Chinese man named Tsai-Lun created a new type of paper using pieces of old cloth. For centuries, people all over the world used this Chinese method (方式) to make paper. In 1838, Charles Fenerty, a Canadian man, invented a new method of papermaking using wood. Today, most of the paper we use is made from wood.

Think again about your book. Did you use paper money to buy it? If so, you can thank the Chinese. They invented paper money in the ninth century A. D. The government began using paper notes as money because there wasnt enough copper (鋼) to make coins.

Today, its hard to imagine life without paper. We use it to communicate in many different ways. We also use many important products that are made of paper. For example, toilet paper. Many believe that an American, Joseph Gayetty, invented it in 1857. Walter Alcock, an Englishman, later had the idea to put the paper on rolls. By 1907, using toilet paper was common in the United States and England.

    - Passage 1 -

A very important world problem—in fact, I am inclined (傾向) to say it is the most important of all the great world problems which face us at the present time—is the rapidly increasing pressure of population on land and on land resources.

It is not so much the actual population of the world but its rate of increase which is important. It works out to be about 1.6 percent per annual net increase. In terms of numbers this means something like forty to fifty-five million additional people every year. Canada has a population of twenty million—rather less than six months climb in world population. There are ten million people in Australia. So, it takes the world less than three months to add to itself a population. Let us take our own crowded country—England and Wales: forty-five to fifty million people—just about a years supply.

By this time tomorrow, and every day, there will be added to the earth about 120,000 extra people—just about the population of the city of York.

Here I am not talking about birth rate. This is net increase. To give you some idea of birth rate, look at the seconds hand of your watch. Every second three babies are born somewhere in the world. Another baby! You cannot speak quickly enough to keep pace with the birth rate.

This enormous increase of population will create immense problems. By 2020 unless something desperate happens, there will be as many as seven billion people on the surface of the earth! So this is a problem which you are going to see in your lifetime.

( )4. According to the passage ________ babies are born on the earth per hour.

    A. 180 B. 3 million C. 120,000 D. 10,800

( )5. The author mentions the different populations of several countries in order to _______.

    A. show how small those countries are

    B. show how thickly those countries are populated

    C. emphasize the low increase of the world population

    D. emphasize the high rate of increase of world population

    - Passage 2 -

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they dont give friendship back. That is why some friendships dont last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.

Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you dont tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you havent been honest, you may lose your friends trust. Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.

Generosity(大度) means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You dont have to give your lunch money or your clothes, of course. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you. By sharing them you help your friend know you better.

Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve (解決). Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friends place so you can understand the problem better.

No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

( )1. Some friendships dont last very long because _______.

    C. Discussing your problems with your friend often helps to solve the problem.

    D. Sharing your mind with your friend is of great value.

( )4. According to the author, how do you help your friend know you better?

    - Passage 3 -

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.

Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.

Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

    - Passage 4 -

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity, others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied (依賴) on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life and death affairs. In their single minded pursuit (追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesnt matter because I really didnt

try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that ones self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

( )1. What does this passage mainly talk about?

    A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

    B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

    C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

    D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

( )2. Why do some people favor competition according to the passage?

    A. It pushes society forward. B. It builds up a sense of duty.

    C. It improves personal abilities. D. It encourages individual efforts.

( )3. The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 means _______.

    A. those who try their best to win

    B. those who value competition most highly

    C. those who are against competition most strongly

    D. those who rely on others most for success

( )4. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail?

    A. Ones worth lies in his performance compared with others.

    B. Ones success in competition needs great efforts.

    C. Ones achievement is determined by his particular skills.

    D. Ones success is based on how hard he has tried.

( )5. Which point of view may the author agree to?

    A. Every effort should be paid back. B. Competition should be encouraged.

    C. Winning should be a life and death matter.

    D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
