- Passage 1 -

A friend of mine was sitting in the living room one day when his cat dragged in a little “gift” in his mouth—a dead animal of some sort. Taking a closer look， he was surprised to recognize the dead animal to be a bunny that belonged to a little girl who lived next door. Her name was Bonny. My friend felt terrible， believing his cat had killed Bonnys bunny.

My quick-thinking friend came up with a plan. Removing from the cats mouth the dead animal， which by now was a dirty mess， he put it in the kitchen sink （水池）. With a little warm

water and some shampoo， he tried to clean up the dead bunny as best he could. Then he took a hair dryer and blow-dried the bunny until it looked pretty good.

Finally， he took the dead bunny out to the neighbors rabbit hutch （茅屋） and placed it

back in the cage. He kind of fluffed （抖開） it up so that he looked very natural there in its box.

The next morning， he looked out of the window and noticed a crowd of people gathered around the rabbit hutch. Everyone seemed to be talking and pointing. He decided to go over and act like any normal curious neighbor and find out what was going on.

When he got there， Bonnys mother said to my friend， “you wont believe what has happened！ Its a miracle！ Bonnys bunny passed away a few days ago， and we buried （埋） that little bunny right over there…

- Passage 2 -

Once upon a time there was a man who left his own country for the world known as the Land of Fools. He soon saw a number of people flying in terror from a field where they had been trying to reap wheat. “There is a monster in that field.” They told him. He looked， and saw that the “monster” was merely a watermelon.

He offered to kill the monster for them. When he had cut the melon from its stalk （藤）， he took a slice and began to eat it. The people became even more terrified of him than they had been of the melon. They drove him away with pitchforks， crying， “He will kill us next， unless we get rid of him.”

It so happened that shortly afterward another man also went to the Land of Fools. But instead of offering to help the people with the“monster，” he agreed with them that it must be dangerous， and by tiptoeing away from it with them he won their confidence. He spent a long time with them in their home until he could teach them， little by little， the basic facts which would enable them not only to lose their fear of melons， but finally to cultivate melons themselves.”

This action of the first person may have worked out the immediate problem， but it didnt comfort the“Fools” because they still held to the original fear. The second person won the confidence of the people and helped them by showing them not only how to overcome their fear of the unknown， but to also accept the melons and cultivate （培育） them for their own benefit.

Dont be afraid of the melons you come across in your lives， but rather welcome them and learn how to cultivate this new knowledge for your benefit and the others around you.

Cause and effect is one way to explain things that happen around us. Many things happen because something caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what causes the effect. It may help you to start with the effect and use your reasoning （推理的） skills. Think about all the things you know that could be reasons for the effect you can see.

For example， you may see someone putting on a heavy jacket. This is the effect. To look for a cause， think to yourself， “What would make someone put on a heavy jacket？” Maybe the person is going outside into very cold weather. Maybe the person works in the penguin pen （企鵝圈養(yǎng)地） at Sea World. Maybe the person is going to visit an ice skating rink where the air is kept very cold. All of these things could be a cause for putting on a heavy jacket.

Now， think about a second example. The effect is that a boy named Abi had to go to the head teachers office. What are the possible causes？ Maybe he bullied （欺負） another student. Maybe he is just being picked up early. Maybe he is being given a prize！

Here is another example for you to think about its cause and effect. Cait， 13， was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother， Doug， came into her room. He looked around a bit， but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the hall light for quite a while. Like many people， I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point， we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.

Although there are a lot of differences in cultures， heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics （特點） which give us courage and make us want to learn from them. A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of it. But a hero is not just the person with great fame （聲譽） .

A hero has powers （力量） larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero， and they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for？ If the answer suggests they serve only their own fame， they may be famous persons but not heroes.

A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has the power to move people. He creates new possibilities. Without Gandhi， India might still be part of Britain. Dear Liz，

My stay in Thailand has certainly been the experience of my life.

Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic. Im very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr. and Mrs. Phairat， their son Sanan， who is 18， the daughter Chinda， who is 16， and Grandpa and Grandma.

I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English， and 30 percent in Thai. Ive learned some spoken language， but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite. Im learning all about Thai food and culture. People dont use chopsticks here， but spoons and forks. When I come back， Im going to cook you a real Thai meal.

Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great， but Sanan and Chinda say that next month theyre taking me to Phuket Island， where the beaches are even more beautiful. The month after next， were going to travel to Mr. Phairats hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there， and they have two elephant. Im going to ride those elephants— and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say its really fun.

Im amazed by everything in this country， especially by the elephants. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a traditional symbol （象征） of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century， a Thai king trained 20，000 elephants for battle.

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself. It is important to know the ways you can use and to show them to everyone in the family， such as stairways （樓梯） and fire escapes， but not lifts.
