Are you a media addict (上癮者) who would go mad after two hours without TV, friend requests, exciting online games and your mobile—or would you easily survive?

Recently, university students around the world were asked to volunteer in a global experiment called Unplugged. It was designed to see how young people would react if they were asked to observe a total media ban (禁令) by unplugging all forms of media devices for 24 hours.

Unplugged is being run by Dr Roman Gerodimos, a lecturer in Communication and Journalism at Bournemouth University. Dr Gerodimos said there were already signs of how much the exercise affected volunteers. “Theyre reporting withdrawal symptoms (脫癮癥狀), overeating, feeling nervous, lonely and disconnected.”

During the 24-hour experiment, three of the experiments guinea pigs had to bear one intrusion (侵?jǐn)_) from the media: a BBC reporter and cameraman who followed them around for the day. They were asked to write down 100 lines about their day offline, but of course, they all waited until the next day when they had access to their laptops.

Elliot Day wrote: “Today, my whole morning routine (常規(guī)) was thrown up into the air. Despite being aware of the social importance of the media, I was surprised by how empty my life felt without the radio or newspapers.”

And Charlotte Gay wrote: “I have to say the most difficult item for me to be without has been my mobile; not only is it a social tool, its my main access point of communication.”

Earlier in the year, a UK government study found that in the UK we spend about half our waking hours using the media, often plugged into several things at once.

Celebrated in the city of Munich, Germany, the Oktoberfest, as it is popularly called, is a 3-week festival that takes place in the months of September and October. Also called the largest beer festival in the world, the Oktoberfest gathers about 6 million visitors worldwide every year. Seeing the popularity of the festival, many countries around the world have adapted to what they call their own version of the Oktoberfest. So if you are not able to make it to Germany, you can always enjoy the festival in the areas mentioned below. Dont miss out on it!

Brazil: welcome to the German town of Blumenau in Brazil. Well, we are not talking about Germans living in the town, but the place was originally founded by immigrants from Germany in the year 1850. The town is built in a traditional German style and there are a fair number of people who still live the way it used to be in good old days. The Oktoberfest is celebrated in a small village called Parque Vila Germanica between the dates of October 1st to October 18th. Guests can enjoy the festival in addition to exploring the town and its sites which include a beer museum.

Vietnam: celebrated in Ho Chi Minh City since 1992, the Oktoberfest event over here is conducted between the 6th and the 11th of October and the decorations are like the original festival in Munich, with large wooden tables lined with beer.

The Philippines: unlike the original Oktoberfest which is celebrated in a certain area, the Oktoberfest in the Philippines is a recent addition to the already existing festival which takes place between the 4th of September and the 9th of October. Now the event is set to be celebrated in a total of 30 parties in various cities around the country.

Canada: over 700,000 guests (second highest after Munich) in and around Canada take part in the Oktoberfest celebrated in Ontario between the 9th and the 17th of October.

In which place does the Oktoberfest take place from September to October?

In Blumenau. B. In Ontario. C. In Ho Chi Minh City. D. In Munich.

From the first paragraph we know that _______.

    A. the Oktoberfest in Germany is the biggest beer festival in the world

    B. every year about 600,000 people celebrated the Oktoberfest in Germany

    C. the Oktoberfest lasts longer in Germany than in any other country

    D. in Germany the name “beer festival” is better known than the Oktoberfest

    91. About the Germany town of Blumenau, we know that ______.

    A. only Germans live in the town

    B. the town was first set up by Germans

    C. the town has many other festivals for visitors

    D. people in the town all live in the old German way

    92. The authors purpose in writing this passage is ______.

    A. to describe the development of the Oktoberfest

    B. to compare the Oktoberfest in different countries

    C. to get readers informed about the Oktoberfest celebrations

    D. to get readers interested in visiting beer festivals

    D

A difficult problem that is facing society is the legalization (合法化) of euthanasia, another word for mercy killing. Euthanasia is a method of causing death painlessly to end suffering. People who are suffering from accidents and incurable diseases are being kept alive by artificial (人工) means. They do not have a chance to recover, but American laws do not allow doctors to end their lives. However, in my opinion, euthanasia should be legalized for several reasons.

The first and most important reason to support euthanasia is that these patients have no chance of recovery. They can never lead normal lives and must be kept alive by life-support machines. They are clearly more dead than alive and will never be able to live a normal life.

Another reason to support mercy killing is that medical costs are very high. Today the cost of a hospital room can be as much as $ 1,450 per day for basic care, which does not include the cost of specialized care or the use of special equipment. The high cost of medical care can cause financial problems for the family.

The final reason to support the legalization of euthanasia is that the family suffers. The nurses and other medical workers can give the terminally ill patient only the smallest amount of care. Thus, the family must spend time to care for the special needs of their loved ones.

In conclusion, terminally ill patients should be allowed to die with dignity (尊嚴(yán)) because they have no chance to recover and live normal lives. Therefore, the family should have the right to ask doctors to turn off the life-support machines or to stop further medical treatment. To lengthen life artificially when there is no hope for the future is a disaster both for the patients and for their loved ones.

    93. The best title for the passage is ________.

    A. The Right to Die B. More Dead Than Alive

    C. No Chance to Recover D. No Further Medical Treatment

    94. According to the author, terminally ill patients ___________.

    A. are worth taking good care of B. are more alive than dead

    C. lay a heavy burden to nurses D. have no hope to recover

    95. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

    (①=paragraph 1; ②=paragraph 2; ③=paragraph 3; ④=paragraph 4; ⑤=paragraph 5)

    96. The authors attitude towards the legalization of euthanasia can be described as _________.

    A. negative B. positive C. doubtful D. uninterested

    E

The United States economy has dipped into economic recession (經(jīng)濟(jì)衰退). This caused discomfort and hardship in every level of society; but for many of the nations poor, discomfort and hardship turned into misery (苦難).

An increase in homelessness is probably the worst result of a nations financial disaster. About 3 million Americans were homeless because of a lack of affordable housing. Experts suggest that a family should spend no more than 30 percent of its income on housing. In fact, in some families housing costs make up 50 percent or more. An unexpected event, such as losing work or illness, can quickly push a family into homelessness.

An article in Time magazine tells a story of one such family. A young couple and their three children rented a

two-bedroom apartment for about $350 a month. They could hardly go on with the husbands $920-a-month take-home pay; so when their rent was raised to $500 a month, they could no longer make ends meet.

Another woman was found dead on a street in Washington D.C., the capital, and she died at a bus-stop across the street from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

People become homeless for different reasons. Some may not be able to pay for housing, because they have lost their job and cannot find another place they can afford. Others have mental diseases, or are addicted to drugs or alcohol, many of whom do not live with their family. And whats more, there are not enough centers for shelter as the government doesnt pay enough attention to this social problem.

People are making efforts to solve the problem. However, it will not be easy, because it is a personal and economical problem as well as a social problem.

    97. The passage is mainly about __________ in the US.

    A. ways of solving economic problems B. homeless people being taken good care of

    C. different reasons for economic recession D. economic recession leading to social problems

    98. In the passage the author supported his view by __________.

    A. presenting specific figures B. giving examples

    C. explaining in details D. discussing different opinions

    99. One main result that economic recession has led to is __________

    A. an increase of living costs B. more and more deaths

    C. an increase of homeless people D. less centers for poor people

    100. How many reasons why people become homeless are listed in the passage?

    A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
