On a foreign land, they work hard to study and survive. As a member of the international student group, their experiences are admirable for others. However, people seldom know their endeavors on this path. Heavy school tasks, obstacles to communicate, and the large amount of living expenditure all become the miseries in their foreign lives. But they don’t choose to depend on families, but to make money by part-time jobs and realize their own dreams with their bare hands.
Fighting in Paris!
When speaking of the working experience when studying in France, Zhao Xiaoxi would not stop talking, stories of him are shooting out from his machine gun-like mouth and I am unable to fight back. But at the same time I am deeply attracted by them and cannot help carrying on listening.
He is a typical Beijing guy, who is a little bit talkative and riffraff, but his striving upward spirit makes others cannot ignore his appearance. Before going to France, he has worked for about 5 years and since he always yearns for the outside world, he resolutely chose to go out of the country using the savings of these years and go into Paris, which is everyone’s admiration.
Though the school there is publicly-funded, life spending was still a large amount. In order to maintain daily life, he chose many kinds of work. From food delivering in Japanese restaurant to grape picking at French vineyard, he has done them all. The grape picking was so tiring that he always got backache at that time and the rest time was all used for energy supplementary by sleep. However, he was most impressed by the days of food delivery in Japanese restaurant.
The job was found on the community website of life service created by Chinese and the community gets a very interesting name called “Fighting in Paris”! In fact, the delivering work was not that easy as imagined, especially for an international student. The streets of the city are famous for the complication and every intersection are in radiated dispersion. Once you go wrong, you may run into a big detour or even get lost and cannot find the way back. Besides, they need to ride a motorcycle, which is a necessary tool for safe and fast delivering.
Zhao Xiaoxi has work experience and quickly learned the doohickey after a period of adjustment. Things are like how to find the specific location on the maps as thick as a dictionary, how to divide the meridian and parallel, how to find the spot and how to recognize the landmark buildings at the side of the road. When talking about this, I can barely catch up with him which makes me be sure that the experience has become part of him.
China always poses as a state of ceremonies and is proud of that. But in Zhao’s opinion, French people are more polite. No matter in the elevator, at the doorway or on the street, they would say hi to you very warmly and talk about the daily life. They would give you a hand without hesitation when you need help, like when you are carrying heavy stuffs or cannot open a door by yourself, they would help you naturally. But the situation in China, as you may know, are like no one dares to help a falling old man, people don’t know who the neighbor is, not to mention greetings that a glimpse of a cold eye can be called as good.
The most unforgettable experience for him was the rainy night of delivering. On that day, he rode the motorcycle to deliver food as usual. But since he wanted to avoid an old man who was crossing the road, he stepped on the brake immediately and changed the direction. All of the actions, due to the influence of inertance took him away from the motorcycle for more than ten meters. He lay on the ground, a little bit slow-witted, and the only thing in his mind was getting hurt or not. He tried to move and control his body little by little to make sure the condition of his injury.
At that time, many warm-hearted Frenches clustered around him. Some helped him to stand up and some asked him if he needed to call the ambulance and be sent to the hospital. Even the motorcycle few meters from him was lifted up and the bags and paper towels of boxes on it were picked up and neatly placed. Although he was safe and sound at last, Zhao was touched by the warmth of Parisian.
Every experience of everyone must have the significance of its existence. For the years in Paris, Zhao Xiaoxi has always be a fighter, no matter bitterness or happiness, are all the most precious memory for him.
Growth is a dose of medicine which is like curved lips
Graduated from Sichuan Foreign Languages University as a Korean major, Cao Weiyang is now studying in school of Hotel and Tourism Management of Woosong University in Korea. When we talked about the reason why she chose this major, she curved her lips, just like her name (Weiyang means slightly curved in Chinese). Like many other girls who were dreaming of romances, Weiyang chose this major because she was more or less affected by Korean TV serials. In these Korean TV serials where the story of the prince and Cinderella happens every day, most of the wealthy heroes who owe family enterprises are of this major.
Like many international students, Weiyang applied for the work-study programs of the school. At first she was asked to do some trifles in the office of Korean college, such as copying files, printing reports and running errands for the teachers. Such low income was not enough to cover her basic living expenses in South Korea at all. It was an accidental chance that once, director of the office was to receive a group of students who went there from China for summer camp, but the teacher was not good at Chinese. Knowing that she worked hard and carefully, the teacher asked her to act as temporary Chinese translator on the spur of the moment.
Before coming to South Korea, Weiyang had never imagined that she would speak Korean to Chinese children. From giving courses, teaching the children some daily spoken Korean, translating the Korean and Chinese interactions for the teacher and children at class to solving troubles for the children during the summer camp and made Korean clothes with cardboard with them, she dealt with everything easily and smoothly. Of course, after the summer camp, she got good bonus.
With her first experience of being a Chinese translator and earning extra money, Weiyang began to hunt for translation jobs on the Internet instead of waiting for the translation work that the teacher assigned. In addition to the translation work she got from the teachers of the office, she had ever received the invitation from Korea National Tourism Organization to act as a translator. Most of the translation work aimed at the domestic tourism groups that travelled to South Korea, most of whom were students, and teachers were the second largest group. The main content were brief daily communications during the tourism and the basic constitution principles of Korean. While working for Korean National Tourism Organization, she also took some translation work of airport pickup and delivery and hotel reservation. Besides the 1000RMB monthly subsidy she got from the department, she earned enough living expenses successfully.
When it came to the most unforgettable experience in the life overseas, Weiyang said, the heavy burden of study made her spend most of the time in the library. If she had not had the translation experience of the summer camp, maybe she would have spent the whole of her postgraduate life in studying. At first, she did not dare to open her mouth and speak in that she thought her Korean was not authentic enough, but now the situation was different. She turned out to be dignified and magnanimous, and spoke naturally and decently. Weiyang said that being not like other students who worked for Chinese restaurants or acting as purchasing agents, she chose a job whose salary was relatively low, but she had never been regretting. It was always a pleasant thing to do what she liked. This one-year translation experience did not only improve her Korea greatly, but also made her more sociable. Since the customers were mainly Chinese, she was more able to deal with various emergent situations easily.
There is a saying in the movie \"The Incredibles\": you are more powerful than you think. The road on which we rush to grow up is the process we try to make ourselves powerful. You can never know that you are able to do something until you do it. After the summer vacation, Weiyang had to give up her job as Chinese translator and returned to the tough study, but I believe that at present, thinking of the experience, Weiyang will really curve her lips.
Being a purchasing agent: a tough experience of those years
Sarah was born in Sichuan. She is currently a business major undergraduate of Rotterdam Business School in the Netherlands. Since she came and studied in Netherlands, she tried to live independently. Although she came from a wealthy family which did not burden her with lots of constraints or pressure on the cost of living, Sarah still want to improve her ability by taking part-time jobs. The second year she came to the Netherlands, domestic incidents of milk powder safety lead to the prevalence of the trend of purchasing milk powder for others.
In the beginning, Sarah purchased milk powder as one of her friends asked her to. Due to the safety problems of domestic milk powder, her friend hoped that she could help to ship two bottles of local milk powder from the Netherlands to China. Later, the acquaintances of her friend got to know it, they also turned to her for help. They even promised to give her some reward for purchasing Dutch milk powder.
During that time, she got more and more orders. To get sources of the goods, Sarah had almost been to all the large or small supermarkets of Rotterdam. Since foreign milk powder was reliable and relatively low in price, her business was getting better. However, only Sarah herself knew the hardship and sufferings she had had. She said, in order to reach the goal of being economically independent, sometimes she had to work for sixteen to seventeen hours every day, and it was common to work until two or three o’clock in the morning. Admittedly, being a purchasing agent is not a full-time job, and Sarah’ main task was to finish her education in the Netherlands, but the increasing number of orders did take her much time which should be spent in learning. Therefore, time management and making reasonable arrangements was an important lesson she had from the purchasing process. But as far as Sarah was concerned, being a purchasing agent did not affect her studies, instead, to a certain extent, it was kind of practical experience and practice which acted as supplementary extracurricular learning. Since Sarah majored in Business, she said actually the whole purchasing process could be regarded as a simulation of a business. She slowly explored how to grasp the market, how to negotiate with others, how to find sources and sales channels, how to make promotions and so on, these were all important topics of Business. At first she looked for customers through friends, later she started to make use of micro-blog. She posted photos of her purchasing process, including pictures of goods and price. Customers enquired and made orders through micro-blog. \"Posting live photos on micro-blog can gain the trust of customers, and is also convenient for them to understand the promotion information, so that they can make orders and purchase instantly.\" These experiences are more direct than those obtained in the classroom, and her feelings are deeper.
Sarah now spends little time and effort in purchasing, in that for her, it is just an experience and practice, especially now, when people hold different opinions on it, and some countries have even introduced policies to regulate and limit this kind of purchasing. Sarah said she did not want to take the risk of touching any grey zone, which was not her original intention. After all, being a purchasing agent was just a work on the side. She should concentrate on studying and try to find a formal job after graduation.
Despite the debates it caused, Sarah said, as a kind of part-time job, being a purchasing agent allowed her to learn a lot, such as responsibility and sincerity. She said, what impressed her the most was that, she bought a birthday present for her mother with the money she earned as a purchasing agent. \"My mother was deeply moved, though she didn't say it, I could feel the tears and comfort in her eyes, because I have grown up.\"
Note: According to the regulations of Dutch government, only students who are taking programs for degrees could do part-time jobs no more than 10 hours per week. But from June to August there is no limit. Generally speaking, it is easier to find a job in big cities and in small cites there are relatively fewer chances, but the competition is accordingly not so fierce. The present salary of part-time jobs per hour is 10-20 guilders. In the Netherlands, students are required to pay taxes for taking part-time jobs.
Professional essay writing: an overseas part-time job in dark
When we are planning for the topic part-time jobs for this month, a busy figure jumped into my mind -- Dawei, who was my alumni when I was studying in the UK. His work experience was different from others’.
At that time, we had just finished our courses and there was some free time before we graduated. My classmates who stayed in the UK whether went travelling everywhere, or took part-time jobs here and there. One day, when I was doing my internship interview, I received a message from Dawei through Wechat, the main contend of which was that he wanted to find a part-time job, and asked me to tell him if I had relevant information. I thought that it was a mass message and I did not have any job information, so we did not talk much about part-time jobs.
But not long after that, I could hardly see David in parties or other activities in which he had great interest, until one day I went to the post office and on the way I encountered Dawei, who was in a hurry. After the greetings, he told me that he rushed back to write an essay. At that time our courses had already finished, how could Dawei still have essay to write? Considering Dawei’s excellent English and study abilities, there could not be any need for him to rewrite. Could he be applying for a PhD?
My confusion was soon solved when I saw Dawei’s message in Wechat’s Moments: professional essay writing.
The dark occupation of professional essay writing has always been around overseas students. You may be followed in the micro-blog suddenly by a user who offers professional essay writing, or you may see an advertisement of essay writing among the information in various forums, or even the friend in your Moments could become a writer like Dawei. Dawei told me that, in a city or area where Chinese gathered, there were even specialized institutions for essay writing. These institutions may recruit some capable students to act as the writers. Dawei also started from the essay writing institutions.
When David was doing his undergraduate studies in the UK, he met a lot of Chinese who looked for essay writing service and Chinese who offered the service. These people formed a group gradually, and both side of the supply and demand could get all that they wanted from the group. Later, Dawei did not only work for the writing institutions, on the basis of his friend group, he got down to professional essay writing independently.
Dawei almost stayed in the room every day when he was writing essays for others. Imagine that, the teachers gave students two or even several months of time to finish a paper, but Dawei usually needed to finish it in three to five days. What impressed me the most was that one day, Dawei posted a thread in Wechat’s Moments: Broke the record again and finished it in one day. In Britain, the teacher corrected papers strictly. If they gave you a month's time, it meant that basically you had to spend a month in reading literature and then you could start to write. Professional essay writing must ensure high pass rate or even high grades, but in general people referred to professional essay writing only when it came to the deadline and they had no other choice. Therefore, people like Dawei must finish a lot of boring work such as reading, material collecting and data analysing in a short time. Professional essay writing required the writers to have certain level of English and studying abilities, besides, it needed to take a lot of their time and energy. David said jokingly that his black rims of the eyes gradually became less obvious only after he had returned to China for half a year. Every essay writer set the schedule for their life according to the progress of the writing and staying up is the most common phenomenon for them. Though it brought considerable income, it was a part-time job in which people should put their life.
No matter where it is, essay writing is an improper part-time job. I asked Dawei for his opinion on the problem. He thought for a long time and told me that, in fact, he knew that it was illegal. The occupation also contributed to the abnormal tendencies that people do not study and do not attend to their proper duties. However, he lacked money at that time and could not find a good part-time job, so he did not think much and started to write essays. Dawei then asked me in return:” Do you think I should feel sorry for them? It was the way they chose. If they wanted to be hard-working, they would not turn to us.”
Dawei is now working for a consulting company for overseas study and no longer engaged in professional essay writing. He mentioned it only as a part-time job in the past, which did not have much effect except that it helped him to make money. But in the day of the interview, I heard Dawei talked to a client on the phone, he said something, which made me feel that the part-time job of essay writing has had more effect on him than what he thinks. People in the consulting company usually encouraged customers to go abroad, but he said to the client:” If your child do not have the ability to live independently and the motivation to study, it is better not to let him go abroad.”
Internship work: the last stage for finding directions
People studied abroad more or less have the experience of part-time job, since it is the best way to integrate into the local society and what’s better is that you can earn money by your own work. If the purpose of part-time job for many people is to make pocket money, then Jia Chao’s work may be an exception, because it is a necessary part of his curriculum in France.
Jia Chao has studied in French Engineer College for two years majoring in “Supply Chain Management”, which is a highly targeted major of learning how to optimize the production line and process flow of large enterprises and plants. In his first summer holiday in the country, Jia has to do internship as an assignment for the students. At that time, he has just been there for half a year and not fluent in French that he can only maintain a simple daily communication with local people. Fortunately, for the first job, he only has to stay for 4 months and the requirements of college and enterprises are not that strict on short-term internship in summer holiday, as long as he can do something good for the enterprise and be recognized by the college in practice defense. So he starts to hand in resume on the employment websites of France, since usually enterprises’ thresholds for such kind of short-term internship are relatively not high, so Jia smoothly enters in an American semiconductor company called Vishay only after one interview. Since the job there is quite basic, so for him it is like a preparation for entering a big company next time. Though it is like examining a thing hurriedly, but an experience for real.
The one with the deepest impression on him is the internship during graduation. It takes him three whole months to find the job. Because it closely connects with the graduation, the requirements are relatively high. Jia says he is very anxious since an appropriate job cannot be found for a long time. After many failed interview, he is finally accepted by a company which produces aircraft noses (AEROLIA, Subsidiary Corporation of aircraft noses production of Airbus Industrie). Then he feels relieved.
The internship lasts for 6 months and is the best experience for really entering the society. His job is to observe and record the production process and the transportation and delivery process of the factory and analyze the consumption of time and the path to find out feasible optimized schemes. It is very in line with his major. He is very cautious and careful already and devotes heart and soul into the familiarization of the production process of air craft noses and thinks about the subject optimization even after work. He declines the invitation by his friends of going to bars and all concentrates on the subject studying.
During the internship, what impresses him most is Frenches’ spirit of dedication and dissatisfaction of current situation. He said, no matter how great the company is for now, from the boss to staff or even the outsourcing party are devoting themselves into the study and subjects for improving enterprise effectiveness. This kind of enterprise culture has deeply infected with him. At the half time of Jia’s internship, it happens to be the successful assembly of the thousandth A330 air craft, and the president of EADS (European Aeronautic Defense Space, holding group of Airbus Industrie) pays special visit to each of the assembly plant to make speeches and extend the appreciation for the contributions by every worker. For an international intern like Jia Chao, he feels honored and a kind of enterprises belonging and this makes him feel worthy to give out all of his energy and power to such company.
Everything comes to him who waits. With the help of colleagues, he finally designs a new scheme for optimizing production material delivery, which is recognized by the company and leaves an excellent record in graduation score. Of course, for him, the more meaningful thing is the process of times of failures and digging. He says, he doesn’t think too much, but just devotes himself into it. Practicing what he learns makes him feel a sense of accomplishment and what’s more important is that he finds the fun there. He now can do a familiar job with ease in observing, designing and applying the optimization system of enterprise operation and has found the direction after graduation, which for Jia Chao is the biggest harvest.
