Shorter School Week

In most of the Unite States， students attend class for five days each week—Monday through Friday. Schools are required to hold classes for about 180 days a year. Recently， schools in some areas of the country have begun discussing the idea of holding classes for four days a week. Classes would meet either Monday through Thursday， or Tuesday through Friday. Some schools in twelve American states are now using that plan.

The students still have the same number of total hours in class as before. But they attend school for a longer time on each of the four days. In the western state of Colorado， schools on the four-day plan hold classes for 7.5 hours a day for 144 days. Traditional schools meet for 6 hours a day for 180 days.

Many schools on the four-day plan offer special programs for students or teachers， trips or sports competition （比賽） on the fifth day. Officials say this give students even more time in class than the traditional schools. Students do not have to miss school to go to the activities. Students can also go to doctors or other appoint-ments on the fifth day.

The main reason for shortening the school week is an economic one. Small school systems say they can save money by not giving meals or transportation for students on the fifth day. And they say research shows that students are not harmed by the shorter week.

The State Schools and Private Schools in the UK

For many parents， one of the most important things is to ensure their children have a good education.

Britain’s education system is well known around the world. Thousands of students come from overseas to be educated in the UK in many different places including private schools， tutorial colleges， and international schools.

Private schools like Harrow and Eton are expensive to get into but what else makes them different from state schools？

There are two differences between a private school and a state school. The most important one is that parents have to pay fees to go to a private school. Whereas a state school is free of charge.

But the other difference is that private schools in this country are not obliged to follow the national state governed curriculum， or even to take the state examinations. So they have a much greater degree of freedom.

The pupils at private schools are treated just like pupils in every other school including the state schools in England. They are not pampered， very far from it， they are expected to behave well， to work hard； they are punished if they don’t.

英國教育體系的知名度是眾所周知的。每年數(shù)千名來自海外的學(xué)子在英國不同的地方接受教育，包括私立學(xué)校、補習(xí)學(xué)院、國際學(xué)校。

像哈羅和伊頓這樣的私立學(xué)校需要支付昂貴的學(xué)費才能進(jìn)入。但什么使私立學(xué)校與公立學(xué)校不同呢？

英國的公立學(xué)校和私立學(xué)校之間主要有兩個不同點。首先，父母必須為孩子支付學(xué)費才能進(jìn)入私立學(xué)校，而公立學(xué)校是免費的。

另一個不同是，私立學(xué)校沒有義務(wù)遵循國家的教學(xué)課程，甚至不采用國家考試，因此，他們有更大的自由度。

英國私立學(xué)校的學(xué)生跟公立學(xué)校學(xué)生都受到同等對待。他們不會享受任何寵愛，甚至人們期望他們表現(xiàn)得更好，更加努力。如果沒有達(dá)到要求，他們會被懲罰。

PS：美式英語中“Public school”就是所謂的“公立學(xué)校”，經(jīng)費絕大部分由政府補助。私立學(xué)校稱為“Private school”。
