陽光只抵達河流的表面

只抵達上面的水

它無法再往下 它缺乏石頭的重量

可靠的實體 介入事物

從來不停留在表層

要么把對方擊碎 要么一沉到底

在那兒 下面的水處于黑暗中

像沉底的石頭那樣處于水中

就是這些下面的水 這些黑腳丫

抬著河流的身軀向前 就是這些腳

在時間看不見的地方

改變著世界的地形

陽光只抵達河流的表面

這頭鍍金的空心鱷魚

在河水急速變化的臉上 緩緩爬過

a reliable object to enter things

never stops at the surface level

it either smashes the other party or sinks to the bottom

where the water is in the dark

like the stone sunken to the bottom remaining in the water

just these waters down here these black toes

lifting the body of the river forward just these feet

in a place unseen by time

change the topography of the world

漢譯英說明：

一向以來，我并不看好當(dāng)代中國詩歌。這個看法只是到了1990年代中期以后，才逐漸有所改變。

于堅的《陽光只抵達河流的表面》是我從他的詩集中發(fā)現(xiàn)的一首我比較喜歡的，而且認為如果翻譯之后也可能會被中選的。我因為長期從事雙語（中英文）寫作，與澳英美加英新（西蘭）等國雜志打交道頗多，我的選譯，往往并不是看在中國有多受人推崇，而是看自己站在離中國幾萬公里之外的地方，是否還能在讀詩后感動。

這首詩的譯文，首先是我在大小寫上的處理。一般英文詩，幾乎100%都要有大小寫的規(guī)格和標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，而我的則一律小寫。這并非完全照搬美國專搞小寫的詩人e.e.cummings的那種玩法，而是從中文而來。中文的方塊字，并無大小之分，故譯之。

其他就幾乎無多談之處，得靠細讀人去理解。自說自話無用。唯有一點：即用英文譯這首詩，特別過癮之處在于，其中有一種文字如河流涌動的感覺，頗具觸摸感。這要感謝原文，更要感謝從來都得不到原作者感謝的譯文。
