    (A)

Maybe ten-year-old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father, “But, Dad, you cant be healthy if youre dead.”

Dad, in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run, had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of the US population make every day. The big question is why.

There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago. The following are three of the most common.

Myth Number One: Its best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.

Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is also going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are youll have traveled through a windshield (擋風玻璃) or door to do it. Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty-five times greater in cases where people are “thrown clear”.

Myth Number Two: Safety belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.

Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious(昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents. People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situations, not to be trapped in them.

Myth Number Three: Safety belts are not needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour (mph).

Truth: When two cars traveling at 30mph hit each other, an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to driving headfirst into the ground from a height of 10 meters.

    1. Why did Elizabeth say to her father, “But Dad, you cant be healthy if youre dead”? ____.

    A. He was driving at great speed

    B. He was running across the street

    C. He didnt have his safety belt on

    D. He didnt take his medicine on time

    2. According to the text, to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because you ____.

    A. may be knocked down by other cars

    B. may get seriously hurt being thrown out of the car

    C. may find it impossible to get away from the seat

    D. may get caught in the car door

    3. Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe ____.

    A. the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident

    B. they will be unable to think clearly in an accident

    C. they will be caught when help comes

    D. cars catch fire easily

    4. What is the advice given in the text? ____.

    A. Never drive faster than 30 miles an hour

    B. Try your best to save yourself in a car accident

    C. Never forget to wear safety belt while driving

    D. Drive slowly while youre not wearing a safety belt

    (B)

The best advice young men and women can hear these days is not “Get Rich”. Its “Go West”.

Those who hope to make their fortunes or, at the very least, find good jobs or life long careers have a better chance of doing so in Chinas western provinces than in the increasingly crowded eastern cities. Along the eastern coast, cities are filled with newcomers looking for work. They seek anything from the lowest-level unskilled jobs to the instant-millionaire Internet chance of lifetime. Few have found the latter, and few ever will.

Some 160 years ago, young men and women streamed into New York, Philadelphia, Boston—the United States equivalent of Chinas Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing. All of these young people were searching for work, for riches, for fame. Few found any of that. The rest joined the masses working hard at low-level jobs trying to support themselves and their families.

Horace Greeley, a well-known American newspaper editor of the period had sound advice for those seeking work. “Do not,” Greeley said, “l(fā)ounge (to stand or sit in a lazy manner) in the cities! There is room and health in the country, away from the crowds of idles (people who waste time doing nothing) and imbeciles (a person of weak mind). Go West…”

In the mid-19th century, when Greeley issued his call to go west, America was about to develop its western regions—much as China is today. Out west, the unemployed could find jobs.

What was needed then in the America West is what is needed now in Chinas western regions; men and women with determination to make something of themselves, men and women with skills any developing nation must have to survive and prosper.

It has nothing to do with the Internet. It has nothing to do with becoming a movie star, pop music idol, or a Bill Gates clone. It has everything to do with reality.

    1. Why does the author think “Go West” is the best advice for young people in China? ____.

    A. If they go west, they are sure to get rich

    B. Chinas west is richer than its east

    C. Eastern cities are too crowded to live in

    D. There are more chances of success there than in the east

    2. The author mentions young Americans of the 19th century because ____.

    A. he wants young Chinese to learn from them

    B. he tries to show how they succeeded in the eastern cities

    C. they were poor examples for todays young Chinese to follow

    D. most of them preferred to work in the west

    3. The underlined word “sound” in the 4th paragraph means ____.

    A. what may be heard

    B. seem when heard

    C. produce a sound

    D. based on truth or good judgment

    4. What is needed in Chinas west now according to the writer? ____.

    A. The Internet B. Movie stars

    C. People with skills D. Pop music idols

    (C)

The United States of America borders(接壤) Canada to the north, and Mexico to the south. The Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean are to the east and the west. Two mountain ranges(山脈), the Appalachians and the Rockies, divide the mainland into three parts.

First is the part east of the Appalachian Mountains extending to the Atlantic coast.

To the north is the part known as New England. It is hilly, rocky and covered with forests, and enjoys fine sports. Rich land is plentiful in the middle, where there are many famous cities, such as New York and Washington D.C. In the south, the land is either pure sand or rich land.

The broad area between the Rockies and Appalachians is called the Mississippi River Basin. The northwestern part is called the Middle West. Rich in natural resources, this area has developed into one of the most prosperous(繁榮的) areas in the country. West of the Middle West is the Great Plains, crop planting and cattle being its major production. The cowboy, who has become well-known to us through Hollywood films, was born here.

Finally there is the part extending from the Pacific coast east to the Rockies.

Along the coast, there are the Coast Ranges. The area between the Coast Ranges and the Rockies receives little rainfall. Deserts cover most of the area. Death Valley, the hottest area in the U.S. is in the state of Nevada. However, to the west of the Coast Ranges, with the sea wind from the Pacific, there is plenty of rain fall. The coast side of the State of Washington to the north receives the most rainfall in the country.

There are many tourist spots in the two major mountains on the mainland.

Particularly in the Rockies, which is twice as high as the Appalachians, there are many national parks, among which lies the Yellowstone National Park.

    1. Where is coal mostly produced in the US? ____.

    A. In the Coast Ranges B. In the Middle West

    C. In New England D. In the Great Plains

    2. In which area of the US does it rain often? ____.

    A. In the State of Washington

    B. In the State of Nevada

    C. In the Middle West

    D. Between the Rockies and the Coast Ranges

    3. Most of the national parks in America are ____.

    A. in the Middle West B. in the Rockies

    C. in the Appalachians D. in New England

    4. Which of the following statements is NOT true? ____.

    A. The US is divided into three parts by two mountain ranges

    B. The Great Plains is famous for crops, cattle and the cowboy

    C. The temperature in Death Valley is the highest in the US, which lies in the Middle West

    D. The United States is between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean

    (D)

Self-employed private doctors who charge a fee each patients visit are the foundation of medical practice in the United States. Most doctors have contract relationship with one or more hospitals in the community. They send their patients to this hospital, which usually charges patients according to the number of days they stay and the facilities (operation room, tests, medicines that they use). Some hospitals belong to a city, a state or a government agency. Others are operated by religious orders (教會) or other non-profit groups.

Some medical doctors are on salary. Salaried doctors may work as hospital staff(員工) members, or residents, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools, or be hired by corporations to care for their workers to work for the governments Public Health Service.

Doctors are among the best paid professionals in the United States. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon for medical doctors to earn incomes of more than $100,000 a year. Specialists, particularly surgeons, might earn several times that amount. Doctors list many reasons why they deserve to be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a doctor in the United States. Most would-be doctors first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000 a year at one of the best private institutions. Then they attend medical school for four years. Tuition(學費) alone can more than $10,000 a year. By the time they have obtained their medical degrees, many young doctors are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency(實習階段) in hospital, the first year as an assistant. The hours are long and the pay is relatively low.

Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too. Sometimes several doctors will decide to establish a group practice, so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These doctors also take care of each others patients in emergencies.

Doctors work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility. Many medical procedures, even quite practiced many times, still involve risk. It is understandable that doctors want to be well-paid for making decisions which can mean the difference between life and death.

    1. According to the passage, it is very unlikely that an American hospi- tal is owned by ____.

    A. a church B. a corporation C. a city D. a state

    2. The expenses for becoming a doctor are mainly spent on ____.

    A. schooling and retraining B. practice in a hospital

    C. facilities he or she uses D. education he or she receives

    3. Sometimes several doctors set up a group medical practice mainly

    because ____.

    A. its difficult for one doctor to take care of too many patients

    B. they can take turns to work for long hours

    C. facilities may be too much of burden for one doctor to shoulder

    D. no one wants to take too much responsibility

    4. The statement that fully expresses the authors view towards US

    doctors payment is that ____.

    A. they deserve a very good payment for their expensive education and their responsibility

    B. it is reasonable for doctors to have a large income because their work is dangerous

    C. doctors should be better paid because they work long hours in bad conditions

    D. doctors have great responsibility, so it is understandable that they should be well paid

    (E)

In general, American food is mild tasting; most Americans do not season(調(diào)味) their food to any great degree. Salads are very popular there and are served all year, especially in the summer. Waiters tend to assume that everyone drinks coffee, but simply tell them if you wish something else. If a waiter says “Now or later?” he means “Do you want coffee with your meal or after it?” Many, but certainly not all, Americans drink coffee or tea with their meals. Either way is perfectly acceptable. When dining out, you can ask for tea, milk, “coke”, wine or beer if you prefer. Normally, when eating in a private home, it is considered better manners to take whatever is being served and not to ask for something different, unless the hostess gives you a choice.

The main course served in American meals is usually meat, fish, or poultry, but rarely is more than one of these served at the same meal. Seafood is sometimes served as a first course, however. Most Americans eat breakfast, and lunch quickly unless it is a social, business, or family occasion. The evening meal, however, is usually longer and a time for the family to gather together. Rushing through daytime meals is part of the fast pace in America. Another reason for rushing through daytime meals is that many people eat breakfast and lunch in restaurants that are usually crowded with people waiting for a place so that they, too, can be served and return to work at the proper time. So each one hurries to make room for the next person. As with busy people everywhere there is a real difference between a meal that is eaten in a hurry and one that can be enjoyed with friends during ones leisure.

    1. The underlined word “them” in the first paragraph refers to ____?

    A. customers B. waiters C. Americans D. people

    2. What is probably the best title for the passage? ____.

    A. The American Customs B. The Lifestyle of Americans

    C. The American Food Habits D. The American Restaurants

    3. We can learn from the passage that ____.

    A. waiters think all customers like drinking coffee or tea

    B. more than one of the three (meat, fish or poultry) is served at the same meal

    C. eating in a hurry differs from enjoying a meal with friends

    D. eating at an American home, it is OK to ask for what is not of- fered

    4. Most Americans rush through their daytime meals mainly because____.

    A. they want to spare more time to relax themselves

    B. their life pace is fast

    C. they often eat their daytime meals at restaurants

    D. they like to eat quickly
