中譯英策略與方法（二十九）

這一期我們討論幾個(gè)形容詞/副詞的使用?！昂侠怼薄斑m當(dāng)”“正常”“自然”可以作為形容詞或副詞使用，表現(xiàn)力豐富，是中文的常用詞匯。譯入英文比較常見的對應(yīng)詞是reasonable、appropriate、normal、natural。在很多情況下這樣翻譯沒有問題，能夠表達(dá)意思，但有時(shí)候可能做不到完全的對應(yīng)。下面對這幾個(gè)詞分別討論一下。

1. 合理

《現(xiàn)代漢語詞典》對“合理”的解釋是：“合乎道理或事理”，比較籠統(tǒng)，但涵蓋面比較廣。我們看看“合理”在具體語境下的使用。

這家餐廳菜很好吃，價(jià)格也很合理，適合學(xué)生消費(fèi)。

This restaurant is a go-to spot for students， with its delicious food and reasonable prices.

對于租戶的合理訴求，公司應(yīng)該給予認(rèn)真考慮。

The company should seriously consider the legitimate concerns of the renters.

我們的原則是，合理的規(guī)章制度要遵守，不合理的要改革。

As a principle， we believe that we must follow the rules that make sense， and change the ones that don’t.

鼓勵(lì)員工對公司的管理和運(yùn)營提出合理化建議。

Employees are encouraged to provide constructive suggestions for improving the company’s management and operations.

通過合理避稅，這家跨國公司成功降低了稅務(wù)負(fù)擔(dān)。

This multinational company has lowered its tax liabilities by effectively using legal tax avoidance （tax planning/tax optimization） strategies.

他花了不少時(shí)間做方案，但最后的結(jié)果好像不合理，不符合實(shí)際情況。

He spent a lot of time working on the proposal， but the final plan was somewhat flawed， and it may not work in reality.

你的決定很不合理，我不接受。

Your decision is totally unfair， and I won’t take it.

上面這些例句里面，“合理”作為形容詞修飾名詞，或者作為表語，說明一件事情的性質(zhì)或狀況。根據(jù)具體語境的不同，“合理”可以表述“公平”的意思，但也有其他方面的內(nèi)涵，例如“符合自己的權(quán)利”“符合規(guī)定”“合法”等，因此對“合理”便采用了不同的譯法。再看下面一些例句。

要擴(kuò)大外資市場準(zhǔn)入，合理縮減外資準(zhǔn)入負(fù)面清單。

We need to reduce the negative list， where necessary， in order to expand market access to foreign investment.

我們將合理地參與區(qū)域自由貿(mào)易協(xié)定，加強(qiáng)與貿(mào)易伙伴的經(jīng)貿(mào)聯(lián)系。

Where it makes sense， we will participate in regional free trade agreements to strengthen our economic ties with trade partners.

合理控制情緒是人的一個(gè)重要修養(yǎng)。

Maintaining emotional control is an important part of personal development.

公司對海外業(yè)務(wù)的發(fā)展還需要周密考慮，合理布局。

The company needs to meticulously plan and deploy its overseas business.

這幾個(gè)例句中，“合理”都是作為副詞使用，用法與形容詞有些不同，雖然是副詞修飾動詞，但在語義上，并不一定都表示動作的方式，還可以表示“程度，范圍，可能性，可行性”等。例如，在“合理縮減”這個(gè)短語中，“合理”不是縮減的方式，而是縮減到合理的程度?！昂侠韰⑴c”不是參與的方式，而是參與的條件和原因，很大程度上還是涉及“過程”和“結(jié)果”的問題。這里就引出一個(gè)很有意思的翻譯認(rèn)知問題。中文的動詞使用較為頻繁，因此副詞使用的量也比較大。在語法形式上，副詞一定是修飾動詞的，但中文副詞有個(gè)特點(diǎn)：既可以說明動作的方式（過程），也可以說明動作的目的或原因（結(jié)果）。但是譯入英文的時(shí)候，如果機(jī)械地采用詞性對應(yīng)的方式，副詞翻譯為副詞，勢必將翻譯限于對動作的方式進(jìn)行說明，而沒有抓住做一件事情的原因或者道理。對于中文的理解如果有這樣一個(gè)角度，則可以大大增加翻譯處理方式的選擇范圍。

另外，最后兩個(gè)例句里面的“合理”則沒有采用具體的詞匯表述，而是在整體的句子里加以體現(xiàn)?！昂侠砜刂魄榫w”（maintaining emotional control）本身就包含了“合理控制”的意思，這里的“合理控制”，“合理”在形式上是修飾“控制”，但實(shí)質(zhì)的意思應(yīng)該是將情緒控制在一個(gè)“合理的層面”，是表述的一個(gè)結(jié)果，不是方式?！昂侠聿季帧眲t是通過一個(gè)副詞meticulously，修飾了兩個(gè)動詞plan and deploy，將“合理”的意思包含在里面。

2. 適當(dāng)

《現(xiàn)代漢語詞典》對“適當(dāng)”的解釋比較簡潔：“合適；妥當(dāng)”。我們來看看這個(gè)詞在不同語境中的處理方法。

老師對學(xué)生的批評很適當(dāng)，既指出了他們的缺點(diǎn)，也給予了他們鼓勵(lì)。

The teacher’s comments on the students were appropriate， both pointing out their shortcomings and offering them encouragement.

藥物適當(dāng)，治療得當(dāng)，她很快就痊愈出院了。

Thanks to the right medication and proper treatment， she recovered quickly and was soon back home.

采取適當(dāng)?shù)拇胧╊A(yù)防老年人跌倒，對他們來說是非常重要的。

For the wellbeing of the elderly， it is important to have safeguards in place that prevent accidental falls.

你的事業(yè)還在上升期，每一筆錢都要用在適當(dāng)?shù)牡胤健?/p>

You’re still in the early stages of your career， so it’s important to be smart with what you spend.

社會心理學(xué)認(rèn)為， 每個(gè)人在特定的社會和團(tuán)體中都占有適當(dāng)?shù)奈恢谩?/p>

Social psychology suggests that each individual has their own role to play within the societies and groups they belong to.

上面這些例句中，“適當(dāng)”也是作為形容詞使用，說明一件事情的性質(zhì)或特點(diǎn)，除了appropriate外，也可以用其他不同的方式表述“適當(dāng)”，例如“錢用在適當(dāng)?shù)牡胤健薄懊總€(gè)人有適當(dāng)?shù)奈恢谩薄?/p>

再看看“適當(dāng)”作為副詞使用的情況。

適當(dāng)?shù)嘏闩愀改?，聽他們聊過去的事情，是讓父母開心的事情。

There’s nothing your parents would appreciate more than you spending time with them and listening to their stories whenever you can.

對這些年輕人要適當(dāng)放手，這樣對他們的成長有好處。

Where possible， let the young people be on their own. It helps them grow.

適當(dāng)取舍，才能真正做到豁達(dá)。

You will be truly a person above pettiness if you know what to let go of.

對公司總裁的任命，董事會將適當(dāng)考慮員工的意見。

The board of directors will give due weight to input from the employees as it selects the next president for the company.

為保障企業(yè)退休人員基本生活，決定適當(dāng)調(diào)整企業(yè)退休人員基本養(yǎng)老金。

In order to support the basic living costs of corporate retirees， proper adjustments will be made to raise their pension payments.

這幾個(gè)例句中，“適當(dāng)”作為副詞使用，英譯都沒有采用詞性對應(yīng)的方法，把“適當(dāng)”翻譯為單一的副詞，而是根據(jù)語境采用了比較靈活的翻譯方式。

3. 正常

《現(xiàn)代漢語詞典》對“正?！钡慕忉屖恰胺弦话阋?guī)律或情況”。英文的對應(yīng)詞是normal，用得非常普遍。和上面兩個(gè)詞一樣，還是先看看“正常”作為形容詞的用法。

想靠彩票發(fā)財(cái)，終究不是正常的生活態(tài)度。

Striking it rich through the lottery is not the way to live life.

我們每周都會打一次籃球，這都成為我們的正?；顒恿恕?/p>

We play basketball every week， and it has become a routine now.

你是老板的兒子沒錯(cuò)，但是要進(jìn)公司的話還是要經(jīng)過正常的招工程序。

We know the boss is your father， but you still need to go through the regular hiring process in order to get a job at the company.

會員國繳納會費(fèi)，構(gòu)成本組織的正常預(yù)算。

Member states make assessed contributions which constitute the regular budget of the organization.

她除了在單位跟同事們的正常來往之外，基本上沒有什么朋友。

She doesn’t have any close friends except for her interactions with colleagues at work.

他沒多說，只給我留了一個(gè)正常的聯(lián)系方式。

He didn’t say much but left me with the usual contact information you could expect from anyone.

這些形容詞都沒有簡單地用normal 處理，以說明“正?！痹诟鞣N語境下翻譯的可能性，但原則上還是要較為準(zhǔn)確地表述原文的基本意思。

再看看“正?！弊鳛楦痹~或者表語使用的情況。

公司正常運(yùn)營，沒有裁員的計(jì)劃。

Business is as usual at the company， and there is no plan for layoffs.

這輛車雖然有點(diǎn)破舊，但行駛正常，沒有故障。

The car may look a bit old and worn-out， but it runs well and has no problems.

合同早就簽了，但是個(gè)別拆遷釘子戶又節(jié)外生枝，使工程難以正常開工。

The contract was signed long ago， but construction couldn’t start as planned because of the additional requests by a few holdout residents.

我一走進(jìn)會場，就發(fā)現(xiàn)今天的氣氛不正常，同事們看我的眼神都很奇怪。

As I walked into the meeting room， I could immediately sense something was off. The colleagues were all giving me strange looks.

最近他們兩個(gè)人的關(guān)系有點(diǎn)不正常，上班不一起走了。

Things seemed a little strained between the two lately. They don’t go to work together anymore.

“正?！币辉~在中文中的表現(xiàn)力還是很強(qiáng)的，用于不同的語境，翻譯自然也可以根據(jù)語境進(jìn)行不同處理。

4. 自然

《現(xiàn)代漢語詞典》對“自然”的解釋，除“自然界”的釋義，主要是“自由發(fā)展，不經(jīng)人力干預(yù)（區(qū)別于‘人工、人造’）”；另外還有一個(gè)比較明確表示因果關(guān)系的“表示理所當(dāng)然”?！白匀弧痹谠捳Z中使用的靈活度主要體現(xiàn)在這幾個(gè)方面。先看看第一個(gè)意思。

他們家的裝修很自然，沒有華麗的裝飾。

Their home has a simple and clean décor， free of any frills.

他們兩個(gè)相處很自然，沒有刻意勉強(qiáng)。

They seem very comfortable with each other， without any forced effort.

她跟男朋友的關(guān)系，決定還是順其自然，先談?wù)勗僬f。

She decided to let her relationship run its course and see where things would go.

她很自然地走上講臺，開始了她的演講。

She stepped onto the podium with calm confidence and began her speech.

面試的時(shí)候不要緊張，表情要自然一些。

Relax and just be yourself during the interview.

這幾個(gè)例句中，翻譯也沒有作對應(yīng)式的處理，但只能作為開拓思路的嘗試，不可作為千篇一律的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)答案。再看看第二個(gè)意思的用法：

她接受了四年的嚴(yán)格訓(xùn)練，取得這個(gè)成績是自然而然的。

Her success comes as no surprise given the rigorous training she has gone through for the last four years.

約翰是他的發(fā)小，為他的競選出了不少力，他當(dāng)選后自然給了約翰一個(gè)重要位置。

It was no accident that he appointed John， his childhood friend who had played a key role in his election， to this important position.

互聯(lián)網(wǎng)本身不可能自然地促進(jìn)教育公平。只有在各種條件都具備的情況下才能促進(jìn)公平。

The internet itself does not automatically promote educational equity. It does only when certain conditions are in place.

回到家就有飯吃，這對他來說已經(jīng)變得很自然了。

He takes it for granted that he would come back to a hot meal every day.

有了“理所當(dāng)然”的內(nèi)涵作為基礎(chǔ)，這幾句話的意思就比較好理解，基本上是表達(dá)一個(gè)因果關(guān)系。從這個(gè)角度看，處理的方法就比較多了，翻譯為naturally當(dāng)然沒有問題，但表示因果關(guān)系的其他方法也不少，例如 of course、sure、definitely、obviously、undoubtedly、as expected、logically等等。

對具體詞匯在話語中的使用進(jìn)行分析，雖然是微觀層面的小問題，但見微知著，小事情能反映系統(tǒng)性的大問題。因此，對這些翻譯的討論不能只是理解為翻譯的策略或技巧，而應(yīng)該著眼于中英文兩種語言在形式和語義上的區(qū)別，建立起對兩種語言系統(tǒng)而透徹的理解。
