    一、記敘文

    Task 1

I am not sure how many books I have reread, but perhaps it is fewer than the averageperson.1The reading material, though, is of course not new.

I used to take the same approach to books as I did to travel: don't go to the same placetwice. Life is too short.2Then I realized that the fact that life is short might work theother way around too: if you know you enjoy something, or somewhere, then why not return?

Recently, I reread Joseph Heller's Catch?22. I was inspired to do so when reminded ofhow he'd respond when people rudely asked him why he'd never written anything as good:“Who has?” Catch?22 pretty much saved my life when I first read it.3I had droppedout of school twice, didn't leave the house at all and didn't have a life. It felt as though Ihadn't laughed in such a long time.

4It managed to take me out of the dark world, and though its themes are, ofcourse, serious, its cleverness cheered me greatly. I related to its characters who are them?selves trapped. I am now planning to reread the sort of books that inspired me in my ownwriting.

I won't take a break altogether from reading the most recent releases. I love the smellof new books fresh from the printers.5

    A. Catch?22 had me laughing.

    B. My favourites are secondhand editions.

    C. There is discomfort in reading recently?released books.

    D. At that time, I was an extremely depressed 17?year?old.

    E. For me, the pleasure of rereading is a newly discovered one.

    F. There is so much to read and so much to see and experience.

    G. However, I have determined to read the old ones more frequently.

    Task 2

Photography for me has always been a key. It opens up doors, gives me an excuse totravel with more purpose, and lets me see behind the scenes.1 “ Better get back totaking photos. Nice to chat!”

What is my advice to beginners? I didn't study photography. I'm not formally trained. 2But thats not what photography is about for me. If you want to be a photographer, beconstantly asking yourself the question:“ What is the story here?” It doesnt matter if youare shooting a dish at your favorite restaurant or the food waste processing plant that dealswith whats left over.3What does that mean? If I'm photographing a dinner party forSocial Supply, its important to capture not just the plate of food, but to step back and cap?ture the scene around it. If I'm taking photos of a mushroom harvest in Yunnan, I makesure to find an angle that shows just how much they've harvested, but also a few close?upsof the weathered hands that are carefully sorting.

4I've taken hundreds of thousands of photos this year alone. The more you shoot, the better you will be. So, start shooting—anything and everything, but specially yourfriends' businesses and projects.

Do I have a good camera? Yes, but some people still think that the photos I took withmy phone were taken on that camera, so don't confuse a good device with being a good pho?tographer.5So start there, and start today.

    A. Let the story guide you.

    B. I have virtually no art experience.

    C. Like anything, photography requires practice.

    D. Photography becomes an incredible drive to explore.

    E. Some of my favorite photographers just use their phone.

    F. It also helps to slip out of awkward small talk at parties.

    G. I feel deeply connected with whatever is captured through my camera lens.

    Task 3

For decades, I was a hard drinker who could drink anyone under the table. This lasted?from the age of 27 until after 50, a golden time during which I felt very sorry for ex?drinkersand people who couldn't or wouldn't drink. How did they make it through social situations, especially parties? What did they do at the end of a workday to celebrate and relax?1

When I first tried to quit drinking myself in my early 50s, I wasn't sure at first whetherit would work for me. But I did it anyway.2I was getting older. I had to concede that Iwasn't as tough as I used to be. Nights of drinking too much showed in my face, and I couldfeel it in my bones. I wanted to take care of myself. So for the next few years, I bounced be?tween drinking and not drinking at all for months at a time, then slowly starting again untilI had to quit again.

During these years, I didn't love not drinking. But I had to admit that when I was offbooze, I looked and felt better physically: I slept more deeply, had more energy and exer?cised more. My mind was clearer. My moods were brighter. Parties were hard, and so wascooking at the end of a day of writing without a glass of wine at my elbow.3

I finally quit drinking for real almost several years ago, when a writer friend stayedwith my husband and me after his wife kicked him out. After my husband had gone upstairsto bed, my friend sat on our sofa drinking an entire bottle of gin, complaining about his fate, until he passed out next to our dog, whose bed was that sofa.4I didn't have a drinkthe next night, or ever again since.

I'm not going to lie: being sober is not a hot?air balloon ride.5Having to feel mydamn feelings without filters compels me to face and change the things in my life that keepme stuck. I connect more deeply with the people I care about. I think of not drinking as akindness I've given myself. And to my surprise, it's rewarded me with true, hard?won happi?ness.

    A. My body demanded it.

    B. My health started improving rapidly.

    C. It's more like a hike in the mountains.

    D. How did they quit drinking?

    E. It was a wake?up call.

    F. But the pluses seemed to outweigh the minuses.

    G. How did they get through life?

Did they maxout on too many things, or are there other factors? And how can we become better savers?

First, put a stop to those impulse buys.2 , even if it is on sale or looks like a bar?gain. Impulse buys are done in the heat of the moment and without thought of what it'scosting you. Encouraging yourself to question your purchase before you buy allows you toprocess what you are doing.

    Task 1

    The pleasures of learning

Learning is a natural pleasure, inborn and instinctive (本能的), one of the essentialpleasures of the human race. When Archimedes discovered the principle of specific gravityby observing his own displacement of water in a bathtub (浴缸), he jumped out with de?light, shouting“, Eureka! Eureka!”1

This pleasure is not limited to learning from textbooks, which are too often boring. 2By opening a book, one can connect with a voice distant in time and space, and hearit speaking, mind to mind, heart to heart. As for reading books, this contains two differentdelights. One is the pleasure of understanding the unexpected, such as when one meets anew author who has a new vision of the world.3

Far beyond books, learning means keeping the mind open and active to receive allkinds of experiences. Among the pleasures of learning, we should include travel, travel withan open mind, an alert eye and a wish to understand other people, other places, rather thanlooking in them for a mirror image of oneself.

4Every new art we learn appears like a new window on the universe, which helpsus acquire a new sense. Crafts, too, are well worth exploring. Most crafts contain one essen?tial pleasure, the pleasure of making something that will last.

5Instead of decreasing in time, like health and strength, its returns go on in?creasing, provided that we aim throughout our life, as we continue learning to integrate (整合) your thoughts to make it harmonious.

    A. But it does include learning from books.

    B. Learning extends our lives into a new field.

    C. This shout means Archimedes enjoyed playing with water.

    D. The other pleasure is about deepening one's knowledge of a special field.

    E. Learning also means learning to practice, or at least to appreciate an art.

    F. Man has the ability to attain happiness, and learning is the best way to achieve it.

    G. The outburst from instinct and the joy of its satisfaction are possessed by all people.

    Task 2

Professionals use the word“ amateur” as a term of contempt (蔑視) for those who lackformal training and qualifications.1One day that amateur might just create a newindustry.

After all, almost all entrepreneurs embody the amateur spirit, starting as a tinkerer ina garage or writing computer code in a bedroom somewhere. There is no union of entrepre?neurs, and no protective body that sets exams and standards. Instead, there is thefree?for?all of the market, a battlefield where only the fittest survive. This flexible and inclu?sive structure is a healthy state of affairs.2

Typical amateurs are free to invent as they please, try new ideas, fail, and get up anddo it all again—but better. As Marshall McLuhan, the media theorist, said,“ Amateurs canafford to lose.”3Amateurs can do it part?time, for charity or for fun. The old cartelsare being bypassed thanks to technological advances and a more informal society. Noweveryone can DIY and experiment—from blogging to film?making to online advice shops.

4The mysteries of the self?satisfied old crafts are revealed for all to see throughthe Internet. The world is vastly more complex now, but that means even the most reveredprofessionals need experts to help them. The end of the age of compliance means we nolonger hold elites such as judges and bankers in such awe. For centuries, the club?like pro?fessional bodies have taken charge of the society, a form for the well?educated and con?nected.

5They represent the ultimate success. I don't deny the importance of education, but I place greater emphasis on results and originality, as opposed to doctorates and mem?berships of professional bodies. They are all too often focused on defending privilege andstatus rather than the public good.

    A. I think such contempt is a mistake.

    B. Some big companies struggle with truly novel breakthroughs.

    C. Nevertheless, I show my admiration for the armies of gifted amateurs.

    D. It breaks down barriers to welcome all?comers and creates a more dynamic order.

    E. Thanks to technology development, we can all be competent amateurs at almost everything.

    F. That's because they naturally want to reinforce past success—and cannot afford public failures.

    G. They are self?improvers, chasing a dream rather than a laborious, life?long career within a group.

    Task 3

Perseverance is a unique precondition for success in life. We can prove this fact whenwe look at the reality of life and the history of man's success. Perseverance helps us dowhat we otherwise would consider impossible to do.

And to succeed in this tough battle, perseverance and hard work is amust.

Perseverance is the secret of success. Without it, no great achievement is possible.Even if a person is not very talented, nor highly knowledgeable, still he can succeed in lifesimply by his perseverance. Every action has its reaction.3It must yield results. Evena genius can hardly succeed in life without knowing how to use his brain and labor. All thegreat men in history, Issac Newton, Columbus, Robert Bruce, etc., have written their namesin golden letters by means of perseverance.4

If one looks at his own life, he can very well understand that whatever he has so fargained, he has gained it only by his hard labor, and not by chance. Therefore, perseverancemust be practiced.5It helps us achieve many goals in life.

    A. So hard labor has no alternative.

    B. They have been changing the world.

    C. Virtually, there is nothing that man cannot do.

    D. In this way, the noble habit becomes a part of ones life.

    E. In human life, the role of perseverance is often ignored.

    F. Their success will always remain as perfect examples to us.

    G. The task that is easily done at the first attempt is undoubtedly very easy.
