To accelerate the development of a more effective international communication system for digital publishing, the “International Cooperation Forum on Digital Publishing”, organized by the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association (CADPA), was successfully held on the afternoon of September 20 at the Marriott Hotel in Haikou during the 14th China International Digital Publishing Expo. The forum saw the participation of Ao Ran, executive vice president and Secretary General of the CADPA, and Wei Yushan, director of the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, who delivered speeches. Around 200 representatives from domestic and international publishing institutions, universities, research institutes, online literature, and internet culture companies gathered to discuss international cooperation and development prospects in digital publishing. The forum was chaired by Li Hong, deputy secretary General of the CADPA and secretary general of the Publishing Integration Committee.
The forum focused on key topics such as how Chinese and international publishing entities can adapt to the global digital economy trends by engaging in product development, channel expansion, model exploration, and copyright operations in the field of digital publishing.
In his speech, Wei Yushan, director of the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, emphasized the importance and urgency of digital publishing in the context of globalization. He noted that with the support of new-generation information technologies like artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing, digital publishing has become an important tool for reshaping the global economic and competitive landscape. Strengthening international cooperation and jointly exploring new models and paths for digital publishing are essential for promoting high-quality development in the global publishing industry.
Ao Ran, executive vice president and secretary general of the CADPA, highlighted in his speech that China’s digital content industry is rapidly growing, with the international influence of online literature, online games, and digital music gradually increasing. This has positively impacted both daily work and lifestyles. He expressed the hope that this forum would foster collaboration within the digital publishing industry, helping build international communication systems and platforms that would play an active role in driving the industry’s development forward.
In the thematic sharing session, the forum invited several experts, scholars, and industry leaders from the domestic publishing sector. They discussed topics such as the trends and opportunities in the international digital publishing market, strategies for digital publishing dissemination, cooperation models, and typical cases of exporting online literature IPs. These discussions covered product development, channel expansion, model innovation, and copyright operations in digital publishing. In the digital era, publishing organizations are encouraged to embrace technological changes, use new technologies to enhance content quality and distribution efficiency, and strengthen international collaborations to help Chinese culture better reach a global audience.
Chen Dan, vice president of Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, delivered a presentation titled “‘Learning from Others’ and ‘China’s Path’: Overview, Trends, and Insights of the Audiobook Overseas Publishing Market.” He provided an in-depth analysis of the overseas audiobook market, examining key aspects such as stakeholders, content ecosystems, technological innovation, and marketing models. Chen explored the emerging trends and characteristics of the global audiobook market and the valuable insights they offer for China's audiobook industry.
Wang Fang, secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), shared insights under the theme “FLTRP Strategy: Global Innovation -- The Synergy of Digitalization and Internationalization.” She discussed FLTRP’s experience with digital transformation and how digitalization has empowered its internationalization efforts, including both bringing in foreign content and exporting Chinese works. Wang summarized FLTRP’s model of combining digitalization with internationalization, offering a valuable reference for enhancing the global impact and competitiveness of digital publishing, ultimately contributing to the high-quality development of the publishing industry.
Fabrice Piault, editor-in-chief of Livres Hebdo and The Bookseller, delivered a keynote speech titled “How to Go Global Without Losing the Spirit.” He introduced the challenges faced by the international publishing industry during its digital transformation, historical lessons learned, and shared insights on how to strike a new balance between traditional and digital publishing. Piault also addressed the importance of protecting innovation and fostering diversity, and discussed ways to collaborate with libraries and promote reading. His thoughts provided valuable references for internationalizing publishing efforts.
Wang Ruiting, vice president of Public Affairs at China Literature, delivered a speech titled “Embracing Digital Opportunities and Telling China’s Story”. He highlighted the company’s practical achievements by focusing on three key areas: content export, model export, and IP export. Wang introduced the diversified original ecosystem of online literature, emphasizing the value of digital copyright through full copyright operations. He explained how these efforts are promoting Chinese stories on a global scale, making Chinese intellectual property (IP) a bright spot in the global digital cultural industry.
Zhang Liping, regional manager for Northeast Asia and general manager of China at OverDrive, discussed the topic “How OverDrive Helps Publishers Achieve Global Influence.” Zhang introduced various aspects of international digital resource licensing and pricing models for e-books and audiobooks, as well as copyright protection measures for institutional sales. She also explored how Chinese publishing institutions can collaborate with their international counterparts.
Yamamoto Norio, president of Chuo Keizai-Sha Holdings, shared insights on the “Latest Trends in Japanese Digital Comics.” He discussed the current state of Japan’s anime industry in 2024, including developments in both the overseas manga market and online manga. He emphasized the potential for enhanced cooperation between the Chinese and Japanese animation industries, aiming to boost the global influence of China’s animation sector.
During the roundtable discussion, the forum invited leaders from publishing institutions, universities, and research institutes to engage in lively discussions on key topics such as the cultivation of talent for international digital publishing and the opportunities and challenges of international cooperation in digital publishing. The participants stressed the importance of effective international collaboration, urging the global publishing industry to enhance communication and coordination, develop joint cooperation rules and standards, foster innovation in digital publishing technologies, and improve the quality and value of digital publishing content. Their goal is to create digital publishing products that are both globally attractive and competitive, advancing innovation and growth in the sector’s international dissemination.
The successful conclusion of the “International Cooperation Forum on Digital Publishing” provided a platform for exchange and cooperation between Chinese and foreign publishing units, injecting new momentum into the internationalization of China’s digital publishing industry. Looking forward, the China Audio-Visual and Digital Publishing Association will continue to serve as a bridge, exploring new models and pathways for international digital publishing cooperation. By building an international communication framework for Chinese digital publishing, the association aims to enhance the capability and competitiveness of Chinese digital publishing enterprises in the global market. This will drive the implementation of more international publishing cooperation projects and open a new chapter in international cooperation in digital publishing.
