    Extractivism in the Anthropocene: Late Imperialism and the Expropriation of the Earth

    Over the last decade and a half, the concept of extractivism has emerged as a key element in our understanding of the planetary ecological crisis. Although the development of extractive industries on a global scale has been integral to capitalist mode of production since its onset, commencing with the colonial expansion of the long sixteenth century, this took on a much larger worldwide significance with the advent of the Industrial Revolution of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, marking the beginning of the age of fossil capital. Nevertheless, it was only with the Great Acceleration, beginning in the mid-twentieth century and extending to the present, that the quantitative expansion of global production and of resource extraction in particular led to a qualitative transformation in the human relation to the Earth System as a whole. This has given rise to the Anthropocene Epoch in geological history, in which anthropogenic(as opposed to nonanthropogenic) factors for the first time in Earth history constitute the major force in Earth System change. In the Anthropocene, extractivism has become a core symptom of the planetary disease of late capitalism/imperialism, threatening humanity and the inhabitants of the earth in general.

    Body and Mind as a Whole: Confucianism and Marx on the Relationship between Human and Nature⊙Wang Ruixiong

    On the issue of understanding the relationship between human and nature, both Marx and Confucianism put forward the framework of “body-mind relationship”. Confucianism believes that humanity is the heart of heaven and earth, and the heart of all things generated by heaven and earth is benevolence. Thus, the heart of humanity is benevolence and the benevolent can integrate all things into a whole. By contrast, Marx holds that human nature is confirmed in the process of transforming nature, and the perceptual nature serves as the objectified power of human nature as well as the inorganic body of human beings. These two modes of understanding respectively take the analytical stand of axiology and ontology, requiring the unity of man and nature through moral cultivation and the rejection of alienation. Their significance lies in guiding us to protect nature as our own bodies and to consciously pursue the harmony between man and nature.

    The Value Logic and Practical Exploration of Green Development Promoting Common Prosperity⊙Wang Jiefa

    The alienation of wealth values is the deep-rooted cause of the wealth disparity. When wealth is replaced by the qualitative specification of use value to the quantitative specification of exchange value, the possession of material wealth becomes the sole criterion for judging affluence, so the more production develops, the wider the gap between the rich and the poor is and the severer ecological crisis becomes. Green development has brought about changes in “what to produce” and “how to produce”, promoted the transformation of people’s needs from the “outside” to the “inside”, and corrected the alienated wealth values. Green development can promote common prosperity from at least three aspects: firstly, it can promote the coordinated development of material wealth production and spiritual wealth production to help achieve the all-round development of people; secondly, it can enable the third distribution to gather social strength for the realization of common prosperity; thirdly, it can improve the cultural service capacity of the ecosystem and enrich the materials and resources to meet the spiritual needs of human beings.

    New Scope of Marxist Political Economy from Chinese-Style Modernization of Harmonious Coexistence of Man and Nature⊙Li Xuejiao & Xue Zhuoni

    The harmonious coexistence of man and nature is the key goal and important feature of Chinese-style modernization construction. The Chinese-style modernization of harmonious coexistence of man and nature views the movement and development of human society and nature from the perspective of the life community. This way of modernization pursues ecological justice and promotes green development by protecting, improving and developing productive forces, and by treating clear waters and green mountains as valuable social and economic assets, thus providing a healthy ecological space for the comprehensive and free development of human beings. It has broadened the scope of Marxist political economy in aspects such as the theory of the relationship between man and nature, the theory of productive forces, the theory of common prosperity and the theory of comprehensive and free development of man, so a new horizon of Marxist political economy has appeared.

    The Ecological Connotation and Contemporary Inheritance of Traditional Chinese Costume Folklore⊙Chen Hongbing

    Traditional Chinese costume folklore embodies the ecological connotation of coordinating with the natural ecological environment and respecting and caring for nature and all things in terms of raw materials, production, shapes, accessories, colors, and patterns. The raw materials of various ethnic costumes generally come from the local natural ecological environment, closely related to the local livelihood and characteristic of being harmonious with the local climate and environment. The shapes and accessories of ethnic costumes should be in harmony with the local natural ecological environment including climate, terrain, vegetation, and so on to meet the needs of local production and lifestyle. The colors and patterns of costumes in various regions are usually consistent with the dominant hue of the local natural ecological environment. The traditional costume dyes are obtained from local natural minerals and plant juices to avoid environmental pollution caused by contemporary chemical dyes and the traditional costume patterns reflect local people’s worship and love of all natural things. As the inheritance of traditional costume folklore is facing various difficulties in contemporary society, it is necessary to explore how to protect and inherit traditional costume folklore from the perspective of ecological and environmental protection.

    The Connotation, Significance, and Trends of Research on Traditional Ecological Ideology and Culture: An Interview with Professor Chen Hongbing⊙Ma Yingxue & Chen Hongbing

    Professor Chen Hongbing from Law School of Shandong University of Technology is a well-known expert in the study of traditional ecological ideology and culture in China. He has long been engaged in research on ecological culture, ecological philosophy, traditional ecological philosophy, Buddhist ecological philosophy, and traditional ecological folklore. He has presided over three projects funded by the National Social Science Foundation, and has published eight monographs and over 100 academic papers. On May 18, 2023, commissioned by the editorial department of Journal of Poyang Lake, Associate Professor Ma Yingxue, Director of the Department of Sociology from Law School of Shandong University of Technology, conducted an interview with Professor Chen Hongbing on the research process of traditional ecological ideology and culture, content, significance and trends of traditional ecological ideology and culture, and research methods.

    How Nature Education Propels Rural Green Development: A Study Based on the Case of Nature Education in Bairuopu Town⊙Zhu Li & Chen Pei, et al.

    With the rise of nature education in China, the majority of villages with rich natural ecological resources have gradually integrated nature education into development planning as they seek development. In recent years, with its significant location advantage and beautiful ecological environment, Bairuopu Town in the western part of Xiangjiang New District, Hunan Province, has partnered with Changsha Huxiang Nature Science Popularization Center to carry out “the light of Bairuo” series of activities to nurture child-friendly nature education talents and facilitate child-friendly growth in a natural setting. Through the analysis of questionnaires for children, various types of interviews and project-related materials, it is found that the project is highly effective in enhancing the ecological literacy and teaching competence of local educators in nature education and in raising local residents’ awareness and willingness for green development. The project shows moderate effectiveness in fostering children’s connection to nature but has limited impact on boosting the local community’s connection to nature and confidence in their native land. Starting from cultivating local talents, nature education in Bairuopu Town primarily benefits local children and families, fosters a renewed sense of confidence in their homeland, activates the endogenous motivation of people who build and create their own countryside, and prioritizes the construction of trust relationships and the improvement of soil environment. In doing so, it not only opens up a unique way of rural green development, but also addresses the key issues in rural nature education, serving as a valuable reference for rural areas across China.

    The Judicial Practice in the Collaborative Governance of Yangtze River’s Ecological Restoration: A Study Inspired by Zhang Jian’s Collaborative Governance Concept of Watershed

    At present, the conceptual framework for the ecological restoration governance has already been perfected. However, at the practical level, there are still problems such as insufficient system construction and improper operations. Therefore, clear guidance based on environmental ethical values and concepts is required to facilitate the orderly formation of a coordinated governance situation for environmental issues. The collaborative governance concept of Zhang Jian, a pioneering explorer of modern industry, includes his thoughts on collaborative relationships among provinces, collaborative hierarchy with some particular focuses, and the public benefit with emphasis on livelihood protection. As a reversal of the block-type bureaucratic system, his concept addresses the overall demand for water governance and enriches the connotation of collaborative governance. In examining the current judicial practice in the collaborative governance of Yangtze River, it is possible to creatively transform Zhang Jian’s ideas regarding the structure of collaborative relationships, the coordination of collaborative institutions, and the exploration of local coordination. Meanwhile, it is also possible to make an innovative development of Zhang Jian’s ideas by establishing the role of the primary driving mechanism for coordinating institutions, further enriching the typology of judicial collaborative governance, promoting the role of social forces in collaborative governance, optimizing the relationship structure in the collaborative governance of Yangtze River, and encouraging the spirit of exploration in local collaborative governance. At a time when the modernization of the national governance system and governance capacity is being comprehensively pushed forward, the full utilization of excellent traditional intellectual and cultural resources, including Zhang Jian’s ideas, can provide important guidance for the governance of Yangtze River’s ecological restoration.

    Impacts of the Yellow River Diversion on the Formerly Flooded Counties from the Perspective of Urban Environmental History: A Case Study of Kaocheng County⊙Wu Pengfei

    Explorations of the life history of the counties that were merged due to the Yellow River flooding are within the scope of urban historical geography and environmental history, providing an important perspective to deeply understand the relationship between the Yellow River and urban development. Kaocheng County, located at the junction of the old Yellow River channel during the Ming and Qing dynasties and the new Yellow River channel after the Yellow River burst its banks at Tongwaxiang in 1855, had experienced far more damages from the Yellow River flooding than other counties. In history, it was struck by flooding six times and had to relocate. Kaocheng County, with its administration centre set in Guyang from 1784 to 1949, witnessed changes of the Yellow River channel and the administration range due to the Lanyang River diversion during the reign of Emperor Qianlong and the Tongwaxiang River diversion during the reign of Emperor Xianfeng. These changes resulted in a chain reaction of the county’ jurisdiction, urban area relocation, administrative division transformation, river defense management, and urban flood control, etc. In the process, the new Yellow River channel after the Tongwaxiang’s diversion played a reshaping role. The in-depth case study on the urban environmental history of Kaocheng reveals the universal laws of the changes of the Yellow River and the development of formerly flooded cities in the Lower Yellow River Plain.

    Analysis of Agricultural Water Conservancy Construction Related to the Yellow River Diversion Project in Huayuankou Area of Zhengzhou during the Collectivization Period

    Since the Huayuankou Incident in 1938, people in the Huayuankou area of Zhengzhou City, Henan Province had long been deeply afflicted by the Yellow River breach which caused severe land desertification and alkalization and low agricultural output value. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Party and the state attached great importance to the governance of the Yellow River. During the period of collectivization, especially from 1957 to 1960, a large-scale agricultural water conservancy construction movement related to the Yellow River Diversion Project was launched, embankments and reservoirs were constructed, and saline alkali soil was improved. More importantly, the regional agricultural ecology was improved and rice production began to appear. However, under the influence of the ultra-left trend of thought during the “Great Leap Forward” period, the national enthusiasm of “l(fā)arge-scale water conservancy construction” was prevalent, and many problems such as secondary salinization occurred in agricultural water conservancy construction movement related to the Yellow River Diversion Project in Huayuankou. Fortunately, the mistake was corrected in time, and with improved drainage facilities, the construction project was able to unleash its enormous potential. Even to this day, it still proves to be a notable success.

    Space, Place and Ecocommunity in Forster’s Writings⊙Cheng Mengli

    In his writings, E. M. Forster criticizes the domination of rootless urban space over the lives of modern urban dwellers, arguing that spatial planning and production based on rational economic utility deprives people of the experience of being directly rooted in a place, thus plunging them into emotional, spiritual and other crises. In contrast, the ecological community-style existence of human subjects rooted in place satisfies their emotional and spiritual needs beyond the meaning of material existence, and embodies the true way of existence of human subjects with the organic quality of guarding all things. The sense of place identity that the subject belongs to an ecological community is the key component of the individual’s overall identity, while the collective cognition and experience of the ethnic group living in the ecological community has also become the basis and prerequisite for the construction of the overall ethnic identity.

    Summary of the Seminar on the Construction of a Socialist Ecological Civilization Society from the Perspective of Chinese Modernization and the 2023 Academic Conference of the “Chinese Research Group of Socialist Eco-civilization”⊙Gao Ruoyun

    From November 3 to 5, 2023, the Seminar on the Construction of a Socialist Ecological Civilization Society from the Perspective of Chinese Modernization and the 2023 Academic Conference of the “Chinese Research Group of Socialist Eco-civilization” were held in Harbin. The conference was co-sponsored by the School of Marxism of Peking University, the Xi Jinping Thought Research Center of Peking University, the Think Tank of Ecological Civilization Construction and Green Development of Heilongjiang Province, the Academic Exchange Base of Ecological Civilization Research of Heilongjiang Province and the School of Marxism of Northeast Forestry University, and more than 60 representatives from more than 30 universities and research institutions across the country, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Nankai University and Northeast Forestry University, participated in the seminar. Founded in June 2015 by the School of Marxism of Peking University and the Beijing Representative Office of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, Chinese Research Group of Socialist Eco-civilization(CRGSE) is a national academic community that independently conducts research on issues related to the theory and practice of socialist ecological civilization. Since its inception, the research group has held an annual academic meeting, and 2023 is its ninth annual meeting. The participants conducted academic exchanges on three topics: “Socialist Ecological Civilization Society from the Perspective of Marxist Ecology”, “Harmonious Coexistence between Man and Nature, Chinese-style Modernization and Socialist Ecological Civilization Society”, and “Policy Fields and Practices of Socialist Ecological Civilization Society Construction”.

    Deepening the Theoretical Research on Xi Jinping’s Ecological Civilization Thought and Promoting the Modernization of Harmonious Coexistence between Man and Nature:An Overview of the 6th Academic Symposium on “Theory and Practice of Socialist Ecological Civilization with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era”⊙Li Quanxi, Cao Yidi & Shan Jingze

    At the 6th national academic symposium on “Theory and Practice of Socialist Ecological Civilization with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era” held by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications from September 15 to 17, 2023, nearly 100 experts and scholars from over 30 universities in China had heated discussions on the theme of “deepening the theoretical research of Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thought and promoting the modernization of harmonious coexistence between man and nature”. The main topic was on the new expansion and perspective of Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thought, the original contribution of Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thought, the logical way of constructing Chinese ecological civilization discourse in the new era, the study of “clear waters and green mountains are invaluable assets” from the Marxist perspective, the multi-dimensional examination of modernization, the major issues in the construction of China’s ecological civilization in the new era, and the integration of Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization thought into ideological and political courses in universities.
