Josh Morrison, 17, dreamed of raising $100,000 to build a home for a low-income family. After years of hard work, his dream has come true.

Six years ago, Josh and his dad went into the Habitat for Humanity Restore, a home improvement store and donation center run by the nonprofit (非營(yíng)利的) organization. They were there to buy a sink. Josh, then 11, also noticed a collection of pennies (便士). “I instantly felt the urge to help out with that,” he said. Josh set a fund-raising deadline (截止日期) of four years. Many people doubted whether he could reach his goal of $100,000, but it didnt shake his faith. Josh has helped with some of the construction and will choose the family that moves into the unit.

Next year, the 17-year-old kid will head to college in British Columbia. As an 11-year-old kid when starting fund-raising, Josh was able to send a powerful message across the world. No matter how old you are, if you have a dream and are willing to do anything to achieve it, it can come true.

My parents ran the Pagonis restaurant, a small eatery in Pennsylvania, and my first real job, when I was six years old, was shining diners shoes. My duties increased as I grew older. By the age of ten I was clearing tables and working as the janitor (清潔工). Dad beamed when he told me that I was the best “mop (拖把) guy” hed ever had.

Working in the restaurant was a source of great pride because I was pitching in for the good of the whole family. But my father made it clear that I had to meet certain standards to be part of the team. I had to be responsible, hard-working and polite to the customers.

Except for the shoeshine job, I was never paid for any work I did at the restaurant. One day I made the mistake of telling Dad I thought he should give me $10 a week. He said, “Okay, then how about you paying me for the three meals a day you eat here? And for the times you bring in your buddies for free sodas?” He figured I owed him about $40 a week. This taught me that when you negotiate, youd better know the other sides arguments as well as your own.

I remember coming home after being away in the Army about two years. I had just been promoted (晉升) to captain and was full of pride as I walked into my parents restaurant. The first thing Dad said was, “Its the janitors day off. How about you cleaning up tonight?” “I cant believe this!” I thought. “Im an officer in the United States Army!” But it didnt matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just another member of the team. I reached for the mop.

Working for Dad had taught me that loyalty to a team comes first. It doesnt matter whether that team is involved in a family restaurant or in the Army.

    1. What did the father think of the authors work at the restaurant?

    A. Well-paid. B. Easy. C. Difficult. D. Well-done.

    A. Satisfied. B. Regretful. C. Excited. D. Hopeful.

    4. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?

    A. He got annoyed at his fathers words.

    C. He was recognized as an honored captain.

    D. He refused to do the job as his father wished.

Todays world is not an easy adjustment for young adults. A key skill set for success is persistence (毅力), a characteristic that researchers say is heavily influenced by fathers. Researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU) discovered that fathers are in a unique position to help their teenage children learn persistence.

BYU professors Laura Padilla-Walker and Randal Day arrived at these findings after following 325 American families over several years. And over time, the persistence gained through fathers led to higher achievement in school.

“There are relatively few studies that stress the unique role of fathers,” Padilla-Walker said. “This research also helps to prove that characteristics such as persistence—which can be taught— are key to a childs life success.”

Researchers determined that dads need to practice an “authoritative” parenting style. Authoritative parenting is not authoritarian: rigid (僵化的), demanding or controlling. Rather, an authoritative parenting style includes some of the following characteristics: children feel warmth and love from their father; responsibility and the reasons behind rules are stressed; children are given an appropriate level of autonomy (自主權(quán)).

In the study, about 52 percent of the dads exhibited above-average levels of authoritative parenting. A key finding is that over time, children raised by an authoritative father were significantly more likely to develop persistence, which leads to better outcomes in school.

This particular study examined 11 to 14-year-olds living in two-parent homes. Yet the researchers suggest that single parents still may play a role in teaching the benefits of persistence, which is a road of future research.

    5. What is special about the BYU professors study?

    A. It centered on fathers role in parenting.

    B. It was based on a number of large families.

    C. It studied different kinds of parenting styles.

    D. It aimed to improve kids achievement in school.

    6. What would an authoritative father do when raising his children?

    A. Ignore their needs. B. Make decisions for them.

    C. Control their behaviors. D. Explain the rules to them.

    7. Which group can be a focus of future studies according to the researchers?

    A. Single parents. B. Children aged from 11 to 14.

    C. Authoritarian fathers. D. Mothers in two-parent homes.

    8. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Three Characteristics of Authoritative Fathers

I like Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens best. This story is set in London, telling the sad life experience of an orphan named Oliver. It is true that he lived a hard life. However, no matter how hard the situation was, he still held good hope and kindness. Therefore, he got help from many kind people and got happiness.

Moved by this inspirational story, I think whatever happens to us, we should never lose hope, kindness or bravery. These are the qualities that can inspire us to go on.

That is why I strongly recommend all of you to read this masterpiece.
