The ocean is where life on Earth began and it continues to be home to an incredibly wide range of species.It has been estimated that there are around 230,000 different marinespecies, but some marine biologists think that there could well be species ten times that number still waiting to be discovered.

The ocean has always played an important part in human life.It performs many functions.Since the beginning of time, the ocean has provided the world with a transport network for goods and people.That's why most of the major cities of the world are close to the sea.Countless numbers of people from other countries have travelled the sea to find a new and better life.World trade has always depended on ocean transport and the world's navies grow up in order to protect the sea trade routes.

The ocean has traditionally been a source of nutritious food,but sadly the general view has always been that what is there is for taking.There has been little regard for sustainability(可持續(xù)性)and in the words of Greenpeace,we are now damaging our ocean on a scale unimaginable to most people.

Large commercial fishing boats catch everything, but not everything is wanted or allowed due to some restrictions and a lot of dead fish are thrown back into the sea.The whole marine ecosystem can be wiped out as huge nets are dragged across the ocean floor,destroying the ocean floor forever.

Overfishing in this way does not enable the fish to sustain their population.As a result, numbers decrease until the point is reached where there are no longer any fish left to catch.Some species have been hunted to extinction and some are almost on the edge.It is said that due to overfishing,large predatory(捕食性的)fish,like cod and tuna,are down to the last 10%of their original number.

The deep dark sea is a surprising area.Down there,it's normal to happen on unheardof never-seen-before animals and their interesting behavior.Sometimes, sources for precious new medicines are collected—and many more are almost certainly waiting to be discovered.

What marine scientists didn't expect to find, however, was a three-foot-long tusk (長(zhǎng)牙) from an extinct mammoth (猛犸象) about 10,000 feet beneath the ocean.Researchers collected the sample off the California coast in July 2021.“You start to expect the unexpected when exploring the deep sea,but I'm still stunned that we came on the ancient tusk of a mammoth,”Steven Haddock, a marine scientist at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute,said in a statement.

Columbian mammoths, giant ice age mammals that stood some 14 feet tall, marched around what is now California as recently as some 11,000 years ago.Paleontologists (古生物學(xué)者) are still pulling their well-preserved bones out of tar in Los Angeles.How did a tusk find its way to the deep sea? It's unknown, and likely will remain unknown.But landdwelling creatures are sometimes washed out into deeper ocean regions, perhaps during great floods.

The intense cold and pressure in the deep sea excellently preserved the tusk.The research team plans to examine the fossil carefully and even determine the long-dead crea-ture's age.They suppose it's over 100,000 years old.

“This deep-sea environment is different from those we have seen elsewhere,”mammoth paleontologist Daniel Fisher said in a statement, noting that most mammoth finds in the ocean are in much shallower waters.

“We know so little about the deep ocean that pretty much anyone can find something new if they were doing something unique down there,”Alan Leonardi, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Ocean Exploration and Research,told Mashable last year.

You may not think it very much—a used ice cream tub on the beach, or a cigarette butt in the sand.But these little pieces of litter amount to around 8.8 million tons of trash in the world's ocean, poisoning and choking sea life, according to the figures from the WorldWild Fund for Nature(WWF).

Now,a set of images titled The Price Of Convenience by Waters has shown the devastating(毀滅性的)effects casual littering has on creatures.In one image called“your convenience is their extinction”,a sea turtle's shell is hollowed out and filled with banana skins,soda cans,and other debris(碎片).

“What is shocking is the amount of trash in the ocean,”Waters, 23, said, describing his project in which he has begun a campaign to the WWF.“When you leave litter on the beach, you are treating the ocean like a trash can.When you throw trash over the side of a boat, you're treating the ocean like a trash can.And when you leave litter at a beach festival or party, it's the same.Obviously it would be impossible to clean the ocean, but I felt I had to try something.”Waters explained that he, like many other Westerners, had always been aware of environmental concerns but did not begin to do anything about it.

The turning point came as he visited Malaysia with his girlfriend last year.To his surprise, he reached the shore to find piles of trash.He had a strong feeling for it after he started researching trash in the ocean.A few months later, he came across the video of a sea turtle in obvious agony (極度痛苦) with a drinking straw sticking in its nostril.That video inspired the first of Waters'three images.“Sea turtles are such gentle creatures.I felt sick watching that video.Trash left on the beach by humans caused so much pain and suffering.These animals don't have voices so we've got to speak up for them,”he added.

Waters has not yet received a response from WWF regarding his images.For now, he says, he is inspired to develop more and more campaigns that raise awareness of environmental concerns.
