Celeste Ng, a new writer, has gained recognition for her first novel, Everything I Never Told You.

Ng’s parents came from Hong Kong, China in the 1960s. Ng was born in America and grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights, Ohio, in a family of scientists. Celeste went to Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award.

Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The main character is Lydia, a teenage girl, who is the favorite of three children born to a white mother and a Chinese-American father. The story is about Lydia’s disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and exposed (暴露的) secrets as they search for their lost daughter.

Though the characters in this story are Asian, Ng says she didn’t really want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story was about real people in her life. Because she grew up in America and doesn’t speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian characters in the book.

The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the Editor’s Pick for No. 1 Best Book of the Year in 2014. Ng is still getting used to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have read her book. With so many readers, it’s safe to say this is a book you should read. But if you’re looking for a simple mystery, this book might not be for you. Most readers warn that you should not read this book unless you’re prepared to cry.

    24. What does the novel Everything I Never Told You mainly talk about?

    A. A family with a missing child. B. The ways to get rid of regret.

    C. The secret of the American world. D. The life of teenagers in America.

    25. What can we learn about Celeste Ng?

    A. She wanted to help the Asian people. B. She wrote about Asian characters.

    C. She was born in Hong Kong. D. She wrote real people in her life.

    26. What can we learn about the book from the last paragraph?

    A. It’s moving. B. It’s about race.

    C. It’s mysterious. D. It has a surprising ending.

    27. What does the text mainly tell us about Celeste Ng?

    A. Her family. B. The awards she won.

    C. Her learning experience. D. Her best-known novel.

    C

Humans are the only creature that gets around by standing up and putting one foot in front of the other. Our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes.

Countless scientific studies have found that walking is really good for us and this simple act can provide a number of health implications, which help people live longer. In fact, a walking routine, if done properly, might be the only exercise people need.

How much walking should one aim for? You’ve likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That’s about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation (建議) doesn’t come from science. Instead, it is from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer (計步器) in Japan. Perhaps because it’s a round number and easy to remember, it stuck.

Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000-steps-a-day standard and have turned up mixed results. Although 10,000 steps is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal, it’s not fit for all.

For instance, a recent Harvard University study involving more than 16,000 senior women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying early when compared with less active women. The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7,500 steps. This 7,500 mark isn’t surprising: It’s similar to common public health recommendations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (適度的) physical activity a week for adults.

    28. What does the underlined word “implications” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Benefits. B. Problems. C. Habits. D. Manners.

    29. Where does the 10,000-steps-a-day standard come from?

    A. A Harvard University study. B. Science research on health.

    C. A pedometer advertisement. D. Public health recommendation.

    30. What should adults do to stay healthy according to the last paragraph?

    A. Walk 4,400 steps a day at most. B. Get into a walking routine.

    C. Ignore the official recommendations. D. Take 150-minute moderate exercise a week.

    31. What is commonly recommended for daily activity?

    A. 4,400 steps. B. 7,500 steps. C. 10,000 steps. D. 16,000 steps.

    D

Riding on an exercise bike at home may keep you in physical shape, but it can get pretty boring after a while. Aaron Puzey had been on his exercise bike for half an hour a day for years when he decided to look for a way to make it a bit more fun.

With virtual (模擬的) reality technology widely available nowadays, all he needed to do was find a way of applying it to his needs. So he set out to build an app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear VR headset (頭戴式視圖器) which would allow him to hook it up to Google Street view and make it seem like he’s cycling through different real-life locations.

Building the app to download the 3D data from Street View and make it viewable in the VR headset was the toughest part of his project. Other than that, all he needed to do was tape a Bluetooth monitor to his exercise bike. Although the quality of the images sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, leaving complex scenes like trees looking like a mess, Aaron has been having a lot of fun on his journey.

Aaron’s project is obviously no substitute (替代品) for real outdoor cycling as it lacks things like the wind blowing in your face or the pain of battling an uphill climb, but it has given him a goal, as well as the chance to take in the beauty of places he might have otherwise never seen. It definitely beats staring at a wall or at the TV for 30 minutes, anyway.

Obviously, Aaron’s setup officially allows him to ride a bike anywhere around the world. He says he has always wanted to see Japan, so once his ride comes to an end, he plans to start another one across the Land of the Rising Sun.

    32. Why did Aaron Puzey build the app?

    A. To participate in a competition. B. To invent a new kind of bicycle.

    C. To satisfy the needs of the public. D. To add fun to his exercise bike routine.

    33. What was the challenge for Puzey in his project?

    A. Changing the 3D data into pictures.

    B. Downloading the software from the Internet.

    C. Making the 3D data viewable in the headset.

    D. Taping a Bluetooth monitor to his exercise bike.

    34. Which word can best describe Aaron Puzey?

    A. Ambitious. B. Creative. C. Boring. D. Funny.

    35. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. The Lazy Man and His Crazy Idea B. Cycling Across the World at Home

    C. A New Way of Cycling Without Effort D. A Substitute for Real Outdoor Cycling

    第二節(jié) (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. 36 The Spring Festival is around the corner, so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey. Before getting into the recommendations, you need to determine your English reading comprehension level. If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options (選項): reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. 37 If you’re at the intermediate (中等的) level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options. For advanced readers, classic works of literature or modern prize winners (Nobel, Pulitzer) are good options.

38 When I pick up a book I like, even though the first few chapters are really hard to get through, I would try to get used to the language the author uses. Generally, after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story.

Another great way to keep you motivated is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve. 39

Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. 40 Happy reading!

    A. If you pick a book which is so challenging, it will be too stressful.

    B. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book.

    C. You may also enjoy your reading when hanging out with your family.

    D. The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in.

    E. You can also discuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by WeChat or e-mail.

    F. You should just find a topic or author you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there.

    G. This will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story.
