    Book: No Looking Back

Book: This Star Won’t Go Out

    Author: Lori and Wayne Earl

Diagnosed (被診斷出) with cancer at 12, Esther Earl was a bright and talented, but very normal teenager. She lived a hope-filled and generous life. A cheerful, positive and encouraging daughter, sister and friend, Esther died in 2010, shortly after turning 16, but not before inspiring thousands through her growing online presence.

    21. What does No Looking Back mainly talk about?

    A. An unlucky girl. B. A successful author.

    C. 10 disabled athletes. D. An inspiring teenager.

    22. In which book does the author tell of himself?

    A. Courage Beyond Compare. B. This Star Won’t Go Out.

    C. No Looking Back. D. Face to Face.

    23. Which word can best describe the four books?

    A. Inspiring. B. Intelligent. C. Cheerless. D. Enthusiastic.

    B

I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”

It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me.

But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me how many “l(fā)ikes” it had got. His question was a wake--up call.

“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval (贊成). I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.

Before Facebook, surfing the Internet was an occasional distraction (消遣) and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.

To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.

I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me, and I started taking yoga classes. I do my best to be a good mother, and my son is happy and healthy.

I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.

The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.

After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly (始終) to post updates.

It is not an addiction any more.

    24. What was the author’s life like before she broke from Facebook?

    A. She enjoyed reading in her free time. B. She spent much time on social media.

    C. She didn’t get along well with her son. D. She didn’t care about what others thought of her.

    25. What does the underlined word “deactivated” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A. Kept. B. Closed. C. Updated. D. Checked.

    27. What was the change of the author’s life on social media?

    A. She collected photos of her friends’ kids. B. She kept in touch with her family more.

    C. She posted her daily updates more. D. She texted her friends frequently.

    C

What is success? I am not going to try to explain success. I think a precise meaning is impossible! Is it winning a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games or winning Wimbledon, or being awarded a Nobel Prize? What else? I believe personal success could be anything at all—it does not have to involve public recognition. Who is more successful? A millionaire who is unhappy, or an unnoticed person, who has led a simple, quiet and happy life? The simplest definition (定義) of success, I think, is “to set out to do something and to succeed in doing it”.

The first step on the road to success starts with belief. Believe you can succeed and you will. Achieving success in whatever effort you choose may be the goal of life, because it gives you freedom from worry. Could that be?

Success means different things to every one of us. Some people believe it is measured in financial term; others believe it is helping others rather than helping themselves. However, most people are motivated (成為……的動機) to a great extent by public recognition. How many people are really happy? How many people are really doing what they want to with their lives? By the way, the ability to imagine makes us different from animals.

Most important of all, I believe success is a matter of personal growth. If every day you are developing or growing just a millimeter, I believe you are successful. Just being a slightly better person each day for me is success. I’ve got a very long way to go then!

Finally, always remember success is a process and is not simply a matter of arriving at a destination. It’s the journey that really matters. Success is what you become in the very difficult and dangerous journey down the river of life.

    28. What is personal success according to the author?

    A. Winning public recognition. B. Leading a super rich life.

    C. Achieving what you want. D. Doing something impossible.

    29. What plays an important role in your success according to the text?

    A. Intelligence. B. Confidence. C. Kindness. D. Wealth.

._____________30. According to the text, man is different from animals in that he has

    A. belief B. success C. freedom D. imagination

    31. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. What Is Success? B. No True Success

    C. How to Be Successful D. Success Is Reaching a Destination

    D

Many people write to newspapers and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to the editor must carry the writer’s full name, address and telephone number, although the information is not necessary for publication. This requirement to provide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are held responsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard, he needs to claim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.

“People today prefer living together to putting their signatures (簽名) on a marriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for the relationship,” said social worker Ken Yip, “and this is what is causing a lot of family problems.” When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract or a bank document, the signature is a seal of permission, an agreement to take the matter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not process written complaints if they do not bear the writer’s signature. The absence of a signature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious and therefore does not deserve a reply.

There are people who wish to remain anonymous (匿名的) for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr King donates generously to charity several times a year. He gives simply because he wants to help but not for the publicity his donations may bring, and he does not want his good deeds to make news. In other cases, people desire anonymity because they are afraid of the results of being known.

Name or no name? The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name. It is a matter of responsibility to use it when we make a statement, a claim or an accusation (起訴). We all want to honor our own name, and it is only by stamping our expression of an opinion with our own name that we honor what we say.

    32. What does the writer mean by saying “Responsibility is the name of the game.”?

    A. Writers are responsible for their names.

    B. Writers need to provide personal information.

    C. Names indicate writers’ responsibility for what they say.

    D. Publication must bear the writer’s personal information.

._____________33. Paragraph 2 suggests that a paper without a signature may

    A. get no reply B. be accepted all the same

    C. help to end a relationship D. become a family problem

._____________34. Some people don’t want their names known because they are

    A. unwilling to draw public attention B. hesitant to make a donation

    C. afraid of an accusation D. ready for involvement

    35. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. Honor and writers. B. Personality and signature.

    C. Anonymity and signature. D. Signature and responsibility.

    第二節(jié) (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

    根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Everyone wants to succeed in their life, don’t they? Even as a teenager, you can achieve success in your life; it really isn’t that hard.

Do well in school. No matter how boring it is now, education will help you be a productive member in society. Try your best for excellence in school; listen to the teachers, do your homework, study, and get good grades. Doing so will help you get into a better university, which will enable you to have a bright future.

Do good in your community. Volunteering can not only improve your community’s status (地位), it can also make you happier. Studies show that people who volunteer are less likely to develop depression (抑郁) than people who don’t. For example, if you love animals, volunteer at an animal shelter. If you love helping the environment, plant trees or pick up litter. When you help others, it will make you feel better about yourself.

Remember, they’re there to help you be the best that you can be. Respect them and value their opinions, even if they annoy you sometimes. Keep in mind that they do the things they do because they care about you. You don’t get to choose your teachers or your family, but you still have to put up with them. Learn how to deal with people now, because when you’re an adult, you don’t get to choose your boss or your co-workers.

    A. Live life to the fullest.

    B. So learn how to respect them now.

    C. Be nice to your parents and teachers.

    D. School sets you up on the right track!

    E. Find chances to do volunteer work that interests you.

    F. It will help you pass time and develop your personality.

    G. Here are some important points that you may find helpful.
