“呆若木雞”出自《莊子·達生》，原指精神凝聚在內(nèi)的意思，現(xiàn)多用來指因恐懼或驚訝而發(fā)愣的樣子。

In the Warring States Period,King Xuan of Qi liked1)ɡamecock [?ɡe?mk?k] n.斗雞gamecock.In order to win,he asked an expert Ji Shenɡzi to train a cock for him.

The King wanted to win2)eaɡerly [?i:ɡ?l?] adv.急切地eagerly,so only a few days later,he asked the expert if the cock was ready to fiɡht.Ji said,“It’s not the riɡht time.”

Another a few days later,the King asked the expert again and the answer was still no.Until the third time,Ji Shenɡzi said that the cock was ready.

Then the King took this trained gamecock to the competition.Other cocks jumped and yelled,but his cock didn’t move at all.Other cocks were frightened by that look.As a result,the King’s cock won.

戰(zhàn)國時，齊宣王愛好斗雞。為了能在斗雞場上取勝，齊宣王特地請馴雞能手紀渻子幫他訓(xùn)練公雞。

齊宣王求勝心切，沒過幾天，便來催問紀渻子公雞是否訓(xùn)練好。紀渻子說：“時機未到。”

又過了幾天，齊宣王又問，紀渻子還是說不行。直到第三次，紀渻子說公雞已訓(xùn)練好了。

于是，齊宣王帶著這只訓(xùn)練好的公雞參加比賽。其他的公雞又叫又跳，而紀渻子訓(xùn)練好的公雞卻一點反應(yīng)都沒有。別的公雞看到它呆呆的、巋然不動的樣子竟然都被嚇跑了。結(jié)果，齊宣王的公雞贏了這場比賽。
