Very little is known of Emily Elizabeth Dickinson as the American poet always kept toherself and lived a life of solitude（獨(dú)居）. She was born on 10th December 1830 at Am?herst， Massachusetts to Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson. She had an older brother，Austin， and a younger sister named Lavinia.

From 1840 to 1847， Emily Dickinson studied at the Amherst Academy， an academicinstitution that was co?founded by her grandfather， Samuel Fowler Dickinson. In 1847， shestudied at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary（now known as Mount Holyoke College）butreturned to Amherst only after a year， and began her own unique life. A new 20?volume collection of the late Chinese writer Wang Zengqi’s works was pub?lished by Zhejiang Literature & Art Publishing House， as a way to celebrate the 100th anni?versary of his birth.

Born in 1920， Wang was a reputed contemporary Chinese novelist， essayist and Pe?king Opera writer. At the National Southwest Associated University in 1939， he studied un?der the supervision of Shen Congwen， widely considered to be one of the greatest Chinesewriters. He was especially popular among readers for his faithful， vivid descriptions ofpeople and the details of daily things， gourmet dishes in particular.

He saw， first?hand， the development of the modern Chinese literary tradition after theMay Fourth Movement in 1919. He was not just an observer， but an important participantand builder of socialist literary traditions after 1949， and then， again， arguably a leader of?the modern literary tradition established in the 1980s.

“This 20?volume collection reflects Wang’s literary view and writing style in a generalsense，”said Wang Lang， the eldest son of Wang Zengqi.

“They don’t reflect the whole picture of his writing， however. There was also a timewhen he was furious and wrote articles about social issues. It was also his view that writersshould take social responsibility. Although his works in this respect are limited， they arean important part of his writing career，”Wang Lang said.

One outstanding characteristic of Wang Zengqi’s writing is the use of colloquial lan?guage， which combined his mother tongue of Gaoyou from Jiangsu Province and the Beijingdialect， because he worked in the capital for a long time， said Li Er， deputy director of theNational Museum of Modern Chinese Literature. An exhibition of Wang Zengqi’s paintingsis currently running at the museum.

Unlike many other popular writers in the 1980s， Wang Zengqi remains popular amongtoday’s readers.

Ivan Pavlov was a Russian physiologist （生理學(xué)家） best known for his discovery ofclassical conditioning （經(jīng)典條件反射）. During his studies on the digestive systems ofdogs， Pavlov found that the animals salivated （流口水） naturally upon the presentation offood. However， he also noticed that the animals began to salivate whenever they saw thewhite lab coat of an experimental assistant. By associating the presentation of food with thelab assistant， he finally found that a dog would salivate over the presence of a stimulus （刺激物） other than food. He called this response a conditional reflex.

Ivan Pavlov was born in a small village in Ryazan， Russia， where his father was thevillage minister. His earliest studies were focused on theology （神學(xué)）， but reading CharlesDarwin’s On the Origin of Species had a powerful influence on his future interests. He soonstopped his religious studies and devoted himself to the study of science at the Universityof Saint Petersburg. Pavlov received much praise for his work. He worked in the Russian Academy of Sci?ence and won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology. The local government also offered lots ofsupport for Pavlov’s work. While Ivan Pavlov was not a psychologist， and reportedly dis?liked the field of psychology， his work had a major influence on the field， particularly onthe development of behaviorism. Born in Cyrene （which is now Shahhat， Libya）， Eratosthenes （276 BCE—195 BCE）spent his time studying a wide variety of subjects under a lot of teachers， including theGreek poet Callimachus. After leaving Callimachus， he spent the next several years study?ing in Athens， where he furthered his knowledge of the world around him.

Eratosthenes was known as having a great deal of knowledge in a great number of dif?ferent fields of study， but not doing the best in any one of them. He did work in astronomy，mathematics， geography， history， and poetry， and also worked as a theatre critic in hisspare time. Eratosthenes would go on to become director of the Great Library for over fourdecades， from 245 BCE to just before the beginning of the second century BCE.

Eratosthenes is most famous for a measurement that he made， for he was the first tomeasure the size of the earth through direct means. He performed a simple experiment andused basic mathematics to find the size of our home planet. The circumference （圓周） ofthe earth， he determined， was about 39，250 km—the real distance is 40，075 km！ And let’snot forget that he didnt have the fancy instruments that geographers have today.

Famous for his studies of the earth， he is often called the“Father of Geography”. In anow?lost work titled Geographika， the contents of which are known because of references（參考） from following books still in existence， he took a global view of the world.
