In 1986， when Monty Reed was a member of the Army Rangers（黑鷹突擊隊(duì)），he had an accident. “It was a night jump， and we were jumping low，”he recalled. “We were training. He thought that if he could build something like that， it might be able to lift him out of his wheelchair. So he began his project and finally succeeded in building a set of robot legs. Several years later， he made an amazing recovery and was able to get up and walk away from his wheelchair. He even jumped out of an airplane again to celebrate.

Monty wanted to do something for others with the second chance that life had given him. He has now perfected the robot legs that can get the injured， the elderly and the paralyzed （癱瘓的）out of their wheelchairs. Now he has started his own company to make the legs. “I've seen them compete in marathons and go swimming and mountain climbing，”he said. “So never give up！”

We've all been there： in a lift， in line at the bank or on an airplane， surrounded by people who are， like us， deeply focused on their smartphones or， worse， struggling with the uncomfortable silence.

What's the problem？ It's possible that we all have compromised conversational intelligence. It's more likely that none of us start a conversation because it's awkward and challenging， or we think it's annoying and unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers， consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it's an invaluable social practice that results in big benefits.

“Dismissing（摒棄）small talk as unimportant is easy， but we can't forget that deep relationships wouldn't even exist if it weren't for casual conversation. Small talk is the grease（潤(rùn)滑劑）for social communication，”says Bernardo Carducci， director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk，”he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others， not just communicate with them.”In a study， Elizabeth Dunn， associate professor of psychology at UBC， invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to seek out an interaction with its waiter; the other， to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their server reported significantly higher positive feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It's not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to yourhusband，”said Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral（邊緣的）members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”

Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a significantly greater sense of belonging， a bond with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners，”he says.

After finishing his dinner， Lin Xu opened a WeChat mini-program called “Clear Plate”on his phone and took a picture of the empty plates. He was then awarded 157 credit points after the image was uploaded and recognized by Artificial Intelligence （AI）. The credit points can be used to buy gifts， such as books， cellphones and red wine， or to purchase charity meals donated to children in poor rural areas.

The “Clear Plate”mini-program has become popular among young Chinese. Similar campaigns like an “empty plate challenge”are also on the horizon in many Chinese universities.

“Technological innovation is a good way to reduce food waste，”said Liu Jichen. Founder of the start?up that developed the app. The idea popped up at a dinner in 2017， when Liu found that the restaurant owner would give diners who polished off their food a card and offer small gifts after a certain number of cards had been collected. “Everyone who values food is likely to enjoy a sense of gain at a lower cost，”Liu mentioned this case， noting that such an idea could possibly be realized online.

He formed a team to work on the project. Yet it was quite a challenge for the AI system to assess（評(píng)定）whether the uploaded photos showed empty plates. To make the AI system smarter， Liu and his team， assisted by more than 1，000 others， spent half a year collecting over 100，000 samples（樣本）from restaurants across the country and analyzed the data. Dozens of companies and restaurants have contacted the start-up to cooperate on the project. Through the mini-program， people can clearly see the good results of saving food， which will effectively reduce food waste. “We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation， encouraging them to develop the habit of saving food，”Liu said.
