Time Transfixed is an oil on canvas painting by Rene Magritte. It is part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and is usually on display in the museums new Modern Wing.
The painting was one of many done for surrealist patron and Magritte supporter Edward James. This was the second painting delivered to James for his London ballroom.
Time Transfixed was purchased by the Art Institute from James in 1970 when he was raising capital to build his surrealist sculpture garden Las Pozas1.
The painting depicts a “Black Five” locomotive jutting out of a fireplace, at full speed, in an empty room. Only the clock and left candlestick are reflected in the mirror on the mantle, suggesting that there are neither people nor furniture in the room. Notably, the candlestick on the right has no reflection.
Magritte described his motivation for this painting:
I decided to paint the image of a locomotive ... In order for its mystery to be evoked, another immediately familiar image without mystery—the image of a dining room fireplace—was joined.
The title of the painting translates to English literally as “Ongoing Time Stabbed by a Dagger” and Magritte was reportedly unhappy with the generally accepted translation of “Time Transfixed”. Magritte hoped that James would hang the painting at the base of his staircase so that the train would “stab” guests on their way up to the ballroom. James instead chose to hang the painting above his own fireplace.

這幅畫描繪了一間空房里一個“黑五”火車頭全速沖出壁爐的情景。壁爐架上的鏡子里只有座鐘和左邊燭臺的映象,表明房間里既沒人也沒家具。很特別的一點是,鏡中沒有右邊燭臺的映象。
馬格利特曾這樣描述此畫的創(chuàng)作動機:
我決定畫一個火車頭……為了讓它具有神秘感,我加上了另一個人們很熟悉、毫無神秘感的形象——餐廳壁爐。
這幅畫畫名的英文直譯是“匕首刺斷的時間流”,據(jù)稱馬格利特對目前普遍接受的譯名《凝固的時間》并不滿意。馬格利特希望詹姆斯把此畫掛在樓梯基座處,這樣火車就會“前沖刺向”去往舞廳的客人;但詹姆斯沒有采納他的建議,而是將畫掛在了自己房間壁爐的上方。
1與眾不同的英國詩人、藝術(shù)家和超現(xiàn)實主義運動贊助人愛德華·詹姆斯設(shè)計建造的一組超現(xiàn)實主義建筑,位于墨西哥的熱帶叢林中。雕塑園始建于1962年,建造持續(xù)20多年,直到1984年詹姆斯去世,耗資超過500萬美元。園中約有36座超現(xiàn)實主義風(fēng)格的混凝土雕塑,超過80英畝的自然瀑布和池塘穿插其間。在西班牙語中,Las Pozas意為“池塘”,得名于園中自然形成的9個池塘。
