You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?

    Jane Addams (1860—1935)

Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community (社區(qū)) by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Rachel Carson (1907—1964)

If it weren't for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world's? lakes and oceans.

    Sandra Day O'Connor (1930—present)

When Sandra Day O'Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator (參議員) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O'Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.

    Rosa Parks (1913—2005)

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. Dream in heart

On the first day of school, our professor introduced a new classmate, a wrinkled little old lady to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty?seven years old.

After class, Rose and I walked to the Students' Union Building and shared a chocolate milkshake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one. We became friends immediately. Every day for the following months, we would leave class together and talk non?stop. I was always attracted, listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She tended to be highly motivated, responsible and deeply involved in class participation. In her spare time, she had someone to hang out or go to bars with. She even participated in certain forms of athletic activities. She said that extra?curricular activities can form a vital part of her experience, creating unique chances for friendship and learning.

At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she leaned against the microphone and simply said, “I m sorry that I'm so nervous.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and continued, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you're nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twenty. If I'm eighty?seven years old and stay in bed for a year, I will turn eighty?eight. Anybody can grow older. It's non?optional and doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way the elderly don't have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” Rose concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose. She challenged us to study the words of the song and lived them out in daily lives.

At the year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be.

    5. Why does the author compare Rose to “time machine” in paragraph 2?

    A. To stress her old age and knowledge of life.

    B. To describe the close friendship between them.

    C. To show that she always enjoyed her active life.

    D. To explain why she took on a challenge in college.

    6. Rose was invited to speak at the football meal most probably because .

    A. she was a great football fan

    B. she was the smartest student

    C. she tried hard to achieve her dream

    D. she became more educated than the others

    7. We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that .

    A. growing older means growing up

    B. it doesn't take talent and ability to grow older

    C. receiving high education helps to be courageous

    D. one grows older at the same time when he grows up

    C

The life of an actor appears attractive and many young people dream about becoming one. But the truth is that it is hard work.

I remember when I started out, I had to search the advertisement board at my drama school every day to look for acting jobs. Drama school was expensive and I needed extra cash to help pay the fees. I welcomed every small job. I played extras in many crowd scenes and became a confident participant in a lot of TV commercials for hair shampoo, soap and washing powder.

I had been working for about two years before I got my lucky break. One day, as I was passing the drama school, I decided to go in to check the notice board. There was nothing on it and I was just leaving when the secretary came along the corridor with a piece of paper. She asked me how I was and I told her life was hard and work was difficult to find. The next moment, she put the paper in my hand and walked away. My hands were shaking as I unfolded the paper, full of expectation. To my surprise, it was an audition (試演) for a clown (小丑) for a Canadian circus. I couldn't stop myself from laughing. I had expected an audition with a famous director for a new film!

When I was at drama school, there had been a course in acrobatics and clown tricks. I gained top marks in this course for originality and daring. Later I went to the audition feeling very strange. This was not what I'd had in mind when I enrolled in drama school. To my surprise, the job as a clown turned out to be exactly what I wanted. I loved every moment of getting dressed up and putting on the make?up. I had the opportunity to travel the world and I was more than an actor. I was an entertainer as well. I had visited over 32 different countries and entertained millions of people.

    8. What can be used to describe an actor's life according to the author?

    A. Easy.

    B. Attractive.

    C. Enjoyable.

    D. Difficult.

    9. According to paragraph 3, the author went into the drama school .

    A. to look for a job

    B. to see the secretary

    C. to collect a piece of paper

    D. to put up a notice on the notice board

    10. Which of the following can best describe the author's feeling when he unfolded the paper?

    A. Extremely frightened.

    B. Anxious and excited.

    C. Very worried.

    D. Frustrated and fearful.

    11. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

    A. The life of a TV actor

    B. Acrobatics and clown tricks

    C. More than an actor

    D. Going to drama school

    D

Did you know that creating a product that fails terribly could get you featured in a museum? Hundreds of failed products and inventions are getting attention and appreciation in the Museum of Failure in Hollywood.

It is the brainchild of Samuel West, a Swedish psychologist who created it to change the way people think about failure. “Failure is necessary for any kind of progress,” West said. It had a travelling exhibition in Shanghai in 2019 with over 100 “failed” products from big?name companies such as Nokia, Apple and Coca?Cola. “I really hope you see that these well known brands that everybody respects screw up too,” West told The New York Times.

West's opinion isn't new. The famed physicist Albert Einstein once said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” This idea has even been embraced by big companies in Silicon Valley. A common slogan is “Fail fast, fail often.” “The best companies are those that encourage failure, embrace out?of?the?box thinking, and allow employees to make mistakes and see what happens,” wrote Simon Custo of Forbes.

But some people are skeptical of this so?called “culture of failure”. They are worried that if failure becomes “a badge (徽章) of honor”, it may even be seen as “uncool” when someone tries to reduce the risk of failure. This may lead to carelessness and lack of efforts. “Sometimes people hide behind failure, which they could have prevented,” wrote Anna Issac of The Telegraph.

So it's important that people set apart the 2 kinds of failure: the kind that shows laziness or incompetence and the kind that takes you forward. The key is whether you've learned something from your mistakes.

    12. Why did Samuel West found the Museum of Failure?

    A. To get himself famous all over the world.

    B. To practice Albert Einstein's view on mistakes.

    C. To draw people's attention to the value of failure.

    D. To exhibit the failed products from big companies.

    13. What does the underlined phrase “screw up” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Make a mess.

    B. Bring much damage.

    C. Contribute little.

    D. Break the rules.

    14. What can we learn from paragraph 4?

    A. Acknowledgement of failure is glorious.

    B. Carelessness and laziness lead to failure.

    C. Learning from mistakes is the key to progress.

    D. The risk of failure should be reduced with efforts.

    15. What does the author think of failure?

    A. Failure is a badge of honor.

    B. Don't come home as a failure.

    C. Face failure and find the reasons.

    D. Better to fail early than to fail late.

    The goals that guide us

Whether we're on the long trip of a midlife career or the walk to the bedroom to finally organize that closet, it can be hard to gather up the motivation to make steady steps.

16 Here are some ways you can take to start moving toward achieving your goals.

    ● Put your goals in writing.

Writing down goals prevents you from leaving your goals vague. Be specific. Use action verbs. 17 Specify completion dates. Also record what your reward will be for achieving the goals. Make a contract with yourself, and then read it each morning and night. This will help you to be more committed to your goals as each day passes.

    ● Learn what you need to learn.

If information or skill is keeping you from achieving your goals, determine ways to fill in the gaps, and build these into your action plan. 18 Think about how much time and effort will be required, and ask yourself whether you are really willing and able to do what is necessary. It is better to adjust your goals or your timetable than to proceed with a plan that is unrealistic.

    ● 19

Find someone, a co?worker or a friend, with whom you share a common goal. Get someone to go to the gym with you, or to quit smoking with you, or to share healthy meals with you. A partner can help you stay committed and motivated. Look for role models, people who have already achieved the goals you seek to reach. 20 Find how they got to where they are, and incorporate (使并入) what you learn into your plan.

    A. Seek the help of others.

    B. Make a list of your tools.

    C. Ask them for advice and suggestions.

    D. Let your goals have measurable outcomes.

    E. Make yourself feel good about the progress you've made.

    F. A thousand?mile journey starts with the first small step.

    G. Be willing to study and work hard to reach your goals.

    The turning point

I used to be a cold?hearted individual who lived in nothing but a world of my own. Unexpectedly, there was a time in my life when everything changed. A beam of sunshine suddenly arose from my heart, opening a door to a new world where I was the key in helping those in need of a hand.

I was a freshman in high school when I stepped in our local nursing home, complaining about having to volunteer there on weekends because my mom had asked me to. Anyway, when I pulled into the parking lot, I realized how different the place was. It was nice and clean with elders everywhere. As I checked in at the front desk for my first service hours, I received a stream of greetings from the surrounding people. It felt as good as breathing in love, which filled me with sudden warmth.

Shelby, the person in charge of community service, assigned me to watch over the elder in room 111. My job was to help with anything she needed. At first I thought this was the beginning of a nightmare, but it turned out to be something completely different.

After listening to Shelby's instructions, I walked toward my destination and knocked softly at the door, asking if I could come in. A voice came from inside answering yes. I stepped inside and introduced myself, with an explanation of why I was there. Meanwhile, I took a look around. The white walls were almost covered in picture frames. I could tell from the pictures she must have been a teacher before. While I was looking around, she introduced herself as Marie Brown, going to be 80 in two months. Her face marked by wrinkles of wisdom could really tell me her life story.

“So you've been here for a while?” I asked. For a minute it was all silent, and then she answered yes with a very sad voice, adding that she had no family. Realizing I had asked the wrong question, I felt bad, for the first time, for hurting someone's feelings, especially this lonely elder's.
