It means “rain of millet”. People celebrate Grain Rain to remember Cangjie. Many people believe that Cangjie was the first person to write Chinese characters. In the legend， when he did this， it rained millet and saved people from hunger.

Space Day of China

On April 24， 1970， Chinas first man?made Earth satellite—Dongfanghong Ⅰ—went into space. It was a big step for Chinas space program. In 2016， the government set April 24 as Space Day of China. Many events are held across the country to celebrate this special day. For example， astronauts and scientists will give talks to students. Some cities will hold exhibitions about space development.

In 2018， China had big plans for its space program. On December 8， 2018， it launched its second lunar rover （月球車） as part of the Change 4 space mission， which landed on the far side of the moon.

If you are a fruit grower—or would like to become one—take advantage of Apple Day to see whats around. Its called Apple Day but in practice its more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21， but since it caught on， events have now spread out over most of October around Britain.

At the events， you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions， and because these are family affairs， children are well catered for with apple?themed fun and games.

Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit， including stately gardens and commercial orchards （果園）. If you want to have a real orchard experience， try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale， near Faversham in Kent.

It would be easy to believe that Mothers Day was created by a greeting card company. After all， the day is celebrated with special sales and brunches， lots of presents and massive advertising campaigns. But the day was actually conceived more than a century ago by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children.

Jarviss mother， Ann Reeves Jarvis， helped start Mothers Day Work Clubs， teaching women how to care for their children. During the Civil War， she organized Mothers Friendship Day， where mothers of Union and Confederate soldiers met to try to promote harmony. The younger Jarvis was inspired by all the things her mother had accomplished with her social work.

When Jarvis was young， she overheard her mother praying， “I hope and pray that someone， sometime， will found a memorial mothers day honoring her for the matchless service she offers to humanity in every field of life.” When her mom died in 1905， Jarvis looked through all the sympathy cards she received. She underlined all the kind words that praised her mother， reading them over and over. The outpouring of kindness for her mother inspired her to create a day to honor all mothers.

The white carnation（康乃馨） was her mothers favorite flower， so it became the symbol for the day. She said it symbolized the truth， purity and charity of a mothers love. Her idea of celebrating Mothers Day was wearing a carnation while visiting your mother or maybe going to church together. Children were also encouraged to write letters to their mothers， sharing the depths of their appreciation.

The first official Mothers Day events were held on May 10， 1908， at the church where her mother taught Sunday School in Grafton， West Virginia， and at the Wanamakers department store auditorium（禮堂） in Philadelphia. Jarvis didnt attend the event in Grafton， but she sent 500 white carnations.

The traditional Chinese Longtaitou Festival， or the Dragon?Head?Raising Festival， falls on the second day of the second lunar month every year， and marks the start of spring and farming. This year it falls on March 4.

Ancient people believed that after this day， rainfall increases because the rain?bringing Dragon King has awakened from his winter sleep. A well?known phrase goes， “Er yue er， long tai tou，” meaning， “On the second day of the second month， the dragon lifts his head.”

The festival celebrates ancient Chinese agrarian culture， and while some of traditional ways to celebrate it are no longer practiced， others continue to exist.

The most famous tradition is getting a haircut. Some believe that going to the barber on this day gets rid of bad luck， while others believe getting a haircut during the first month of the lunar calendar brings bad luck. Another saying warns that cutting your hair in the first month will cause your uncle to die. Although today few pay attention to it， it was once a tradition to line up outside barbershops on the day of Longtaitou.

People eat tofu balls in East Chinas Fujian Province during the festival， and often make tofu and vegetable balls to pray for family and business. Fried beans are the traditional festival food for people in parts of Shandong Province. Eating chengyao cakes， which are made with sticky rice， during the festival is a tradition in Suzhou， East Chinas Jiangsu Province， owing to the saying， “If you eat chengyao on Longtaitou， your waist wont hurt all year.” Meanwhile， other foods， like noodles， dumplings， and spring rolls， are named after dragon body parts to mark the day. Noodles are dragons beard （long xu）， dumplings are dragons ears （long er）， and spring rolls are dragons scales （long lin）.
