“色彩繽紛”的俗語

我們在學習英語的過程中，有時會遇到一些和顏色有關的俗語或習語。如果我們望文生義，只根據(jù)字面意思去理解，往往會鬧出笑話。今天，我們就來學習幾個和顏色有關的俗語吧！
in the red
該短語起源于20世紀20年代的美國。在會計學上，通常用紅墨水記錄債務，用黑墨水記錄利潤。in the red作為俗語，意為“有赤字，虧空，負債”。
例： Are we in the red this month？ 我們這個月出現(xiàn)了赤字嗎？
That new company is already in the red. 新開的那家公司已經(jīng)虧空了。
yellow-belly
belly有“腹部，肚子”的意思，但yellow-belly這一俗語和肚子毫無關聯(lián)，它的意思是“膽小鬼、懦夫”。
例： Nick， you yellow-belly. That’s your own shadow. 尼克，你這膽小鬼。那是你自己的影子啊。
green with envy
該短語的意思是“嫉妒的，眼紅的”。
例： He was green with envy at my success.他十分妒忌我的成就。
Every time you turn green with envy you are ripe for trouble.每次當你嫉妒時，你就要面臨麻煩了。
the black sheep
牧羊人不喜歡黑綿羊，因為它們的毛不如白羊毛值錢，而且染不成白色。早期的牧羊人還認為黑羊會驚擾羊群里其他的羊只。市場行情、迷信加上偏見如此風行，以至于到了18世紀晚期，一些行為“出格”的人都被叫做“黑綿羊”。the black sheep作為俗語，意為“敗家子，害群之馬”。
例： His younger brother is the black sheep of the family. 他弟弟是他們家的敗家子。
Tom is the black sheep in his class. 湯姆是他班上的害群之馬。
in the pink
這一俗語意思為“非常健康，滿面紅光，容光煥發(fā)”。
例： A glass of red wine keeps you in the pink. 一杯紅酒有益健康。
She felt in the pink only two weeks after the operation. 手術兩周后，她就恢復了。
out of the blue
out of the blue與藍色毫無關系，意思是“突然，出乎意料地”。
例： One of them wrote to us out of the blue several years later.
數(shù)年后，他們中的一人突然給我們寫了一封信。
John arrived out of the blue. 約翰沒有事先告知就來了。
white elephant
在泰國、緬甸等國白象（white elephant）被視為神圣不可侵犯的動物，人們從不會讓它們勞作。據(jù)說，飼養(yǎng)一頭“white elephant”花費驚人，國王對看不順眼的大臣就賜給白象，使他為飼養(yǎng)御賜的白象而傾家蕩產(chǎn)。white elephant這一俗語意思為“昂貴而無用之物”。
例： I’ll never buy a car， for it’s only a white elephant to me.
我決不買汽車，因為它對我只會是一個累贅。
The new office block has become an expensive white elephant.
這座新辦公大樓成了昂貴的擺設。
in black and white
該短語意思為“白紙黑字，以書面形式”。
例： He gave me assurance in black and white.
他給了我書面保證。
[情景對話]
A： Why don’t you go to school today， Nancy？
南希，今天你怎么沒到校上課？
B： I have caught a bad cold， and I am not feeling in the pink.
我患了重感冒，感覺不舒服。
A： Oh， I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you’ll soon be in the pink again.
我很難過，希望你早點恢復健康。
B： Thanks a lot.
謝謝！
A： After school， I am going to see you and help with your lessons. Bye-bye.
放學后我去看你，輔導一下你今天落下的功課。再見。
