In many countries in the world, public money is mostly used for preserving architectural heritage in different ways. In my opinion, these funds are being spent effectively in this way. Old buildings such as historical buildings should be protected and turned into wonderful places for learning and visiting so that we can gain appropriate benefits from them.

Personally speaking, using public funds for architectural heritage preservation is accurate as the society can take numerous advantages from this. First of all, these historical buildings, palaces, shrines (神殿)… are striking evidences for past lives and buildings. For example, before cameras were invented, there was no way to show how a life of a king was during his age. However, with his castle and exhibits, researchers can build up assumptions (假設(shè)). The second considerable benefit of preserving architectural heritage is for tourism. In my country, every year, Hue welcomes thousands of visitors to its ancient capital, which contributes greatly to the provinces income.

Among distinct types of old buildings, I suggest preserving historical one as a studying and attraction spot. This is because, along with tourism purpose, old houses and palaces surviving throughout time, witnessing the countrys important events are huge material for both students and researchers. Schools can use them for practical history lessons, which help children to learn more effectively.

To sum up, spending public money for protecting architectural heritages is a brilliant choice of most governments in the world. Besides, I think we should concern more about preserving historical buildings, turn them into visiting and learning areas in order to get the best out of them.

    4. What is the authors attitude to using most public money to preserve architectural heritage?

    A. Doubtful. B. Favorable.

    C. Unsupportive. D. Carefree.

    5. What is one of the advantages of using public funds to protect architectural heritage?

    A. Making money.

    B. Gaining inspiration.

    C. Preparing for future.

    D. Improving the environment.

    6. Why do schools use historical buildings?

    A. Their materials are unique.

    B. Students have an urgent demand.

    C. They help increase students knowledge.

    D. They are good for students communication skills.

    7. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. Ways of Architectural Heritage Protection

    B. Architectural Heritage Is a Treasure of Society

    C. Architectural Heritage Protection—a Wise Choice

    D. Views on Using Public Money for Architectural Heritage

Responsibility is an admirable character that makes life better for everyone around you. It isnt only about doing your homework or feeding the dog. 1 Showing responsibility isnt always easy, but practicing and making an effort will help you improve over time.

Think of the consequences before speaking or acting. Bad decisions often lead to a lot of new problems. You can avoid these problems by thinking about what youre about to do before you go through with it. 2

Pause and reflect (沉思) on your actions to see what you can do better. Take a time out to look back on what you have said or done, especially after a difficult decision. 3 Consider what goes right, what goes wrong, and what you can do differently next time. Use what you learn to become wiser and more responsible.

4 If youre honest, people will believe you are a responsible person. Try to be as honest as possible. This can be very tough to do at times, but its something you can handle when youre a responsible person.

Apologize for any mistake you make. No one is perfect, and no matter how responsible you try to be, you might mess up sometimes. 5 If you hurt someone, tell them you are sorry and will do better next time.

    A. Tell the truth to be honest with others.

    B. Instead of hiding your mistakes, own them.

    C. Find solutions for problems instead of ignoring them.

D.Its also about making proper choices and doing what is right.

E.By reflecting, you give yourself a chance to make better decisions.

F.Avoid big lies hurting ones feelings if you want people to trust you.

Adventure-seeker Emma broke her ankle when she fell awkwardly while climbing a rock and spent a week in hospital waiting for an operation on her foot. When she was sent home to recover under strict instructions not to bear any weight, she became so fearful of crutches (拐杖) that she didnt move for three weeks. “I tried crutches but I kept falling over and injuring myself. So I literally just stayed on the sofa all day,” says Emma.

She was gutted at the thought of missing the Wolf Run. “If you complete four Wolf Runs in a year, one in each season, you get Alpha Wolf status,” explains Emma. “This year was going to be my fifth in a row as an Alpha Wolf and I was really upset that Id lose my status.” So she was willing to try anything to get through the course—even with her injured ankle.

“I was telling my friend that I was going to cancel, and he persuaded me to give it a go. Having something to aim for really kept me going.” Emma completed the run wearing an iWALK2.0, which is a medically-approved device and it basically functions like a hi-tech artificial leg, allowing users to walk freely. “I decided to get one and it completely changed my recovery. I could move around the house and start getting out and about again, which had a real impact on my mental well-being.”

On the day of the race, Emma was nervous but the sound of people cheering her on kept her motivated. Emma made it over the finish line in just under six hours and clocked up her 23rd Wolf Run in five years. “It was an incredible day and my determination to finish combined with the support I received along the way kept me going,” says Emma.

Located in the northeast of Italy, Venice is well-known for its culture treasures, romantic atmosphere and unusual living-on-water experience. The city spreads out over 118 islands, which are linked by more than 400 bridges, in the Venetian Lagoon.

Venices historical center consists of six regions. Italy in the south, the busiest main regions, are linked by the Rialto Bridge. The famous stone arch bridge crossed Venices main waterway—the Grand Canal. When night falls, many tourists enjoy dinner at the outside tables by the Grand Canal while watching colorfully lit boats going by.

Near the end of the S-shaped Grand Canal lies St Marks Basillca, a must-see. Inside, beautiful mosaics tell stories of Bible figures. Nearby are the Doges Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. These were made famous by Lord Byron, “I stood in Venice on the Bridge of Sighs, a palace and prison on each hand.” Legend has it that if a couple passes under the bridge, their love will last forever.

In the square outside the Basilica, lovers of literature can sit at Caffe Florian, regarded as the oldest coffee house in Europe. Charles Dickens, Henry James as well as Lord Byron enjoyed the aromatic (芳香的) drink here.

Art lovers should buy a museum pass and visit some of the citys exceptional museums. They can view works by Venetian masters like Giovanni, Titian and Tintoretto.

On five small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, Murano has been home to glass-makers since 1291. Tourists can visit factories, studios and the Glass Museum. Glass artists produce everything from simple souvenir pieces to beautiful works of contemporary art. Only glassworks made by using traditional methods on Murano can be called Murano Glass. The nearby island of Murano is famous for lace (蕾絲) making and colorful houses. Looking at the colorful houses and kaleidoscopic streets makes people feel as if they were walking in the fairy tale.

One day, I was on my way back home while I saw a young man painting a picture in a tree. I felt very surprising, so I went up to see more clear. He told me that he was art student. He spent his free time drawing pictures in the trees, hope to make the city more beautiful. His words encouraged me so much that I was volunteered to help him. He said it took him about one and a half hour to finish a picture. By the time I met him, he has finished ten pictures of his own. After that, they often worked together and became good friends.

The arm bones of women who lived 7,000 years ago show a surprising level of strength—even higher than todays professional athletes. Thats according to a first-ever study comparing prehistoric (史前的) bones to those of living people. The finding suggests a revision of history—the everyday lives of prehistoric women were filled with hard labor, rather than just sitting at home doing lighter tasks while the men struggled and fought for life.

“Before the study, there are no clear records describing how our ancient ancestors lived. It can be easy to forget that bone is a living tissue, one that responds to the difficulties we put our bodies through,” said lead author Alison Macintosh. “Physical force and muscle activity both put pressure on the bone. The bone reacts by changing in shape, thickness and other aspects over time.”

Previous studies only compared female bones to contemporary male bones, the researchers said—and thats a problem, because the response of male bones to stress and change is much bigger than that of women. For instance, as humans moved from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle constantly on the move to a more settled agrarian (農(nóng)耕的) one, changes can be observed in the structure of the shinbone (脛骨)—and these changes were much more evident in men.

However, a comparison of the bones of prehistoric women to the bones of living female athletes can help us work out a more accurate picture of what those prehistoric women were doing. “By analyzing the bones of living people and comparing them to the ancient bones, we can start to explain the kinds of labor our ancestors were reforming,” Macintosh said. What they found was that womens leg strength hasnt changed a great deal, but their arms used to be very powerful. Prehistoric women, the researchers found, had arm strength 11—16 percent stronger than those of modern rowers, and 30 percent stronger than those of non-athletes.

    1. What does the study tell us about prehistoric women?

    A. They were stronger than men.

    B. They did tough tasks as the men.

    C. They had lighter bones than men.

    D. They spent most time staying at home.

    2. What problem did previous studies on prehistoric bones have?

    A. They lacked enough comparison.

    B. They only studied mens bones.

    C. They focused little on bones.

    D. They ignored the lifestyles.

    3. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A. Bones structure.

    B. Bones thickness.

    C. Bones response to stress.

    D. Bones stress from hard labor.

    4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A. Its still hard to explain our ancestors lifestyle.

    B. Prehistoric women went through much suffering.

    C. Womens arms have become much stronger over time.

    D. Prehistoric women are stronger than contemporary females.

    The Science of Happiness

Everyone wants to be happy. Some argue that the main reason people do the things they do is to become happier. Others argue that happiness is a basic human right. 1 What really makes people happy?

    Measuring happiness.

Social scientists usually count happiness simply by asking how happy people are. 2 Ed Diener, an expert on happiness from the University of Illinois, says that this is an effective way of getting information about peoples happiness.

    3

In one study, researchers asked people in different parts of a country, “How satisfied are you with your life?” People in parts of the country with nicer weather said they were more satisfied with their lives. They said they lived better than people from a city with bad weather.

    Money and happiness.

Researchers have examined the relationship between money and happiness for many years. They say that very poor people are less happy than rich people. 4 If you have a home, food and clothes, extra money doesnt make you happier.

    What makes people happy?

According to researchers, there are three things that make people happy:

◆Having close relationships with people—family and friends. 5

◆Believing in something. This could be a spiritual view or a special philosophy (人生哲學(xué)) in life.

◆Having goals that you find enjoyable and interesting. This means that your life has a purpose.

    A. But what is happiness?

    B. Weather and happiness.

    C. Highly-paid jobs can make people happy.

    D. Most people are satisfied with their lives.

    E. But lots of money doesnt make you happier.

F.They ask people the question “How happy are you from 1 to 10?”

G.The closer and deeper the relationships are, the better for your happiness.

    閱讀理解

The Amazon basin region is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2,000 birds and mammals. To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 3,000 fish, 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region. One in five of all the birds in the world live in the Amazon rainforest.

The warm and wet forest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and thrived even during glacial periods, allowing for the evolution of an unbelievable diversity of species. Radiocarbon dating (放射性碳測(cè)定年法) has revealed trees of 10 centimeter in diameter to be more than 300 years old, and some trees over 1,000 years old, indicating that untouched forests can experience unbelievable longevity.

The first human inhabitants are thought to have settled in the Amazon region since about 11,200 years ago. European explorers arrived in the 16th century, bringing diseases which traveled faster than the explorers themselves, killing perhaps as many as 90% of the indigenous inhabitants (土著居民). By the late 17th century, the Amazon basin was controlled by Portuguese and Spanish explorers.

The Amazon rainforest has been described as the lungs of our planet because of its important role in recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. But due to deforestation (濫伐森林), rainforests now cover less than 5% of the Earths land surface, and experts believe that this is a big contributor to global climate change. Severe deforestation began in the 20th century, with 587,000 square kilometers lost up to the year 2000. Most deforested land is used for grassland to raise farm animals

and agriculture. The addition of transport routes has led to increased settlement and deforestation, and at the present rate, scientists estimate that the Amazon rainforest will be reduced by 40% in two decades.

    1. Why are the figures mentioned in Paragraph 1?

    A. To prove the forest untouched.

    B. To count species completely.

    C. To show the diversity of species.

    D. To attract more attention to the Amazon region.

    2. Why did most indigenous inhabitants in the Amazon region die?

    A. European explorers brought diseases there.

    B. Portuguese explorers treated them badly.

    C. A lot of trees were cut down and burned.

    D. They got killed by Spanish explorers.

    3. What can we infer about the Amazon rainforest?

    A. It has the largest number of species.

    B. It covers over 5% of South America.

    C. It is becoming larger in area.

    D. It is being endangered now.

    4. What would be included in the paragraph following of the text?

    A. Ways to stop global warming.

    B. Measures to protect rainforests.

    C. Examples of destroying forests.

    D. New settlements in the Amazon region.
