After Bernini broke his neck and lost all movements below his shoulders when he was 18， his brain still told his hands how to move—but the message couldnt get through the injured part that connects his brain to other parts of his body. Now， thanks to recent advances in electrical stimulation （刺激） technology. Bernini can once again grasp， pour， and even play Guitar Hero. To do so， he uses a micro-electrode array （MEA） that reads his brains signals and sends them through wires to something like a sleeve on his arm that electronically stimulates his muscles （肌肉）.

In the past years， researchers have used several approaches to guide patients like Bernini to move their hands. In some systems， researchers implanted （植入） sensors in shoulder muscles that patients could still control， allowing them to move one hand by contracting muscles in the opposite shoulder. Other systems use brain implants similar to those in the new study， but to control robotic arms， rather than the patients own muscles. But never before has a patient been able to precisely move his hand using the same neural （神經(jīng)的） signals that controlled his hand before his injury.

After implanting the MEA in Berninis brain， researchers connected it to a computer. Bernini trained the system to connect patterns of neural signals to specific movements by repeatedly mirroring the movements of an imaginary hand on a computer screen. Soon， Bernini could hold large objects like glasses and lift small objects like straws. He could also move each finger on his own just by thinking about it， which previous systems had never achieved. And it was absolutely an amazing moment.

But one woman doesnt. The woman， code-named “UM”， gave her first-ever interview after years of being studied by a team of researchers. The woman is given a code name because the researchers want to protect her from anyone who would take advantage of her inability to feel afraid.

UM cant tell you what fear is because shes never experienced it. “I wonder what its like to actually be afraid of something，” she said. The formal name for the disease is Urbach-Wiethe disease， which is characterized by a hoarse （粗啞的） voice， small bumps around the eyes， and calcium deposits in the brain.

In the case of UM， the disease has transformed the part of her brain that controls the human response to fear. In the interview， UM talks about an event in her life where she was held at knifepoint and gunpoint， “I was walking to the store， and I saw a man on a park bench. He said， ‘Come here， please. So I went over to him. He grabbed me by the shirt， put a knife to my throat and told me he was going to cut me. I told him， ‘Go ahead and cut me. I wasnt afraid at all. And for some reason， he let me go.”

Doctors who have been studying UMs condition for years have been trying different things that could strike fear into her. They finally figured something out—increasing UMs carbon dioxide levels. Extra carbon dioxide concentration in the blood is known to cause fear and panic in health individuals. Increasing UMs carbon dioxide levels did manage to give her a fright.

Benjamin West， the father of American painting， showed his talent for art when he was only six. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. We are naturally drawn to friends and colleagues with familiar voices. Scientists have found people prefer those who have a similar accent， intonation and tone of voice to themselves.

When the winds are swift， Costa Calma Beach turns into a hot spot for surfers. The road leading to the beach is fenced by green plants meaning the magic starts even before you get there.

Cofete Beach

The shoreline of this wild beach is great for its golden sand and wild water. Getting to Cofete Beach is not easy： perhaps thats why this place is still in its original state. The road has difficult spots that require expert driving skills. But， if you can tolerate it， you will be treated with some amazing views.

In 2014， Mindy Scheier started the Runway of Dreams Foundation， a non-profit （非營利的） organization that helps bring adaptive clothing to disabled people.

Scheier explained the inspiration behind her efforts. “My son， Oliver， was born with rigid spine muscular dystrophy，” she said. “His lack of strength created challenges with typical clothing. After spending years in the fashion industry， I decided that there was an opportunity to combine my fashion experience with my others.”

Scheier began to create trendy clothing that her son could wear with ease. For example， she used magnets and elastics （松緊帶） in place of buttons and zippers. Those adjustments have enabled Oliver to wear the same style as his friends do， even jeans.

Scheiers vision extends beyond just helping her own son. “I soon realized that millions of disabled people were also struggling to access fashionable clothing that meets their needs，” she said. That was why she started the Runway of Dreams Foundation.

On September 5， 2018， the foundation held its annual fashion show during New York Fashion Week. The event showcased the foundations new adaptive clothing. The show featured several disabled models， including Cole Gottlieb and Maddie Hostetter. Cole， a 9-year-old boy born with cerebral palsy， loves to play baseball and soccer. He was excited to participate in the fashion show. “It lets me be a role model to others，” he said. Maddie， aged 8， was born with only one full arm. “I heard about Runway of Dreams from my mom，” explained Maddie. “Even though I can button clothes with one arm， the magnets have made it much easier for me.”

Scheier—whose TED Talk was released in January 2018—credits her passion with the progress Runway of Dreams has made in the last few years. “Passion allows you not to take no for an answer，” she encourages. “It allows you to keep going when faced with challenges.”

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870， it was experiencing an economic boom （繁榮）， and the capital， Buenos Aires， attracted many people. Farmers， as well as a flood of foreigners from Spain and Italy， came to Buenos Aires seeking jobs. These jobs didnt pay well， and the people felt lonely and disappointed with their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city， the dance known as the tango （探戈舞） came into being.

At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes. It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time there were many fewer women than men， so if a man didnt want to be left out， his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the few available women. Gradually， the dance spread into the upper classes of Argentinean society and became more respectable.

In Europe at this time， strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. This interest in international dance was especially evident in Paris. Every kind of dance from ballet to belly dancing could be found on the stages of the Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe， they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes. Though not everyone approved of the new dance， saying it was a little too shocking， the dance did find enough supporters to make it popular.

The popularity of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world. Soldiers who returned to the United States from World War Ⅰ brought the tango to North America. It reached Japan in 1926， and in 2003 the Argentinean embassy in Seoul hired a local tango dancer to act as a kind of dance ambassador， and promote tango dancing throughout South Korea.

With the average American going through more than 700 pounds of paper per year， many firms are looking for ways to discourage their employees from over-using the office printer.

Toshiba American Business Solutions has come up with an alternative idea. It has introduced the e-STUDIO4508LP， a printer that gives users the option to print with erasable toner （墨粉）—allowing a single piece of paper to be reused several times.

To reuse a piece of paper， the printer basically uses the same process as a normal printer， but in reverse （反過來）， said Bill Melo， chief marketing executive for Toshiba America Business Solutions. Paper printed with the erasable toner is fed back into the printer， superheated， and the toner gets removed and put in a discard （丟棄） tank.

There are a couple of catches. All of the printouts using the erasable toner have to be in blue ink， which is the only color in which erasable toner is now available. And the company said that people may want to stop reusing the printouts after five times through the eraser because small traces of erased text will build up over time.

The $15，420 printer is aimed at offices and schools， where there are often large numbers of printouts that outlive their usefulness quickly. With the erasable toner， its possible to load any short-lived handouts back onto the printer to be erased and then reused.

Still， convincing customers to commit to erasable toner isnt always easy. Melo said not all its customers were happy about only having the erasable option.

The model， Melo said， should better serve the needs of those who want to be environmentally conscious but also may need something more permanent on occasion.
