It was a hot day in Bangkok. I was walking out of the busy Grand Palace, and some1Thai teens started asking me questions. Noticing that I was2 , they were interested and wanted to know more.

“Oh, so lonely!” they said to me when they learned I was, indeed, traveling solo for the3journey. I smiled and shrugged. They didnt know Ive4been alone.

Im surprised by how much more outgoing Ive become. Instead of putting my5down and ignoring (忽視) the person who may be passing me on the sidewalk, now I6and say hello.

Solo travel is17 . And really, unless I truly want and seek out18 , I am never alone. I always have a19 . I never feel left out. Sometimes, being alone forces you to reach out to people you might not otherwise have ever20 .

Life is full of beautiful moments. All you have to do is open your eyes and your heart to1them. I saw one just the other day.

The school I worked for had just ended and I found myself behind a school bus as I was2home. The bus stopped by a house sitting on top of a(n)3 . A little girl no more than 7 years old4the bus steps and started running up the driveway5the house. I looked up the hill to see where she was going and saw her dad6for her. As she got closer and closer, her dad smiled and knelt down to7her. The second she got to him he wrapped his?8arms around her and gave her a9hug.

My eyes10a bit as I watched this scene and11all the times my own children had run into my12with smiling faces and loving hearts. My lovely13was interrupted when I heard the car behind me sound its horn (喇叭). I saw the school bus14pulling away and started to15it again. I did so, however, with a fuller heart and a better16than I had before. I took that beautiful moment and17it safely in my soul where I knew it would remain forever.

One day we all will18this school of learning and finally get to go home again. I know that when it is my time I will run quickly from that19and right into my Heavenly Fathers arms. Enjoy your day here at school then. Teach, love, and20 , but know that one day you will be going home where the love never ends.

When one hitchhikes—traveling by getting lifts from passing vehicles without paying, one1long hours either waiting at a likely intersection (岔路口) or2heavily down the road. And when I was so engaged, I found3in singing songs or in reciting the many poems I had memorized, or4the latest postcards I had added to my art collection.

I was in many ways the5boy on the road, in other ways the richest, and I was always happy to be on the road meeting new people,6new stories and seeing new landscapes. I have never been7enough to analyze (分析) the motivation or drive for my hitchhiking, but I8that it was related to any mental (精神的) weakness. I have never been out of mind. Home was not9enough to keep me tied to it. I had no material10of any kind to hold my interest for long periods of time staying at home. Yet I was not11with my family, my school and my friends.

When I was12 , hiking with very little money and a thousand miles from home, I was convinced that I would?13my journey safely, for I was quite optimistic as a boy then with14life before me. So it was with me when I was at sixty—I was still optimistic with so many15behind me. It seems that I was born to16at the world, and such men do not write tragedies.

The simple fact seems that whenever I saw that17road outside my house, I was18to explore what it was like. What Walt Whitman once said would always push me to go on, “Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open19 , healthy, free, the world before me, the long brown path before me leading wherever I20 .” That makes a difference to my life.
